Between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, many Star Wars enthusiasts debated Rey's heritage. In a recent interview on The /Filmcast, via /Film, Johnson revealed some of the ideas he toyed with before reaching his final decision, which moviegoers witnessed in theaters last December.

In The Last Jedi, a conflicted Rey reaches out to Kylo Ren as a kindred spirit; both of them feeling alone in their search for meaning and purpose. In a heated moment, Ren asserts Rey's parents are not coming back for her, but rather she was sold off to pay for their next fix. The revelation Rey was a "nobody" was a shock to many fans expecting her to be a secret Solo, Skywalker, or even Kenobi.
