Fox’s Last Man on Earth had a roller coaster of a first season, debuting to great acclaim and impressive ratings at the beginning of March only to eventually falter in the eyes of many critics and audience members alike in the weeks that followed. After being hyped by pundits as the best thing to come to the situation comedy in years, those same voices began to wonder if the joke was, in fact, on them. Was The Last Man on Earth a one-pump chump?

It started out brilliantly enough, taking the oh-so-popular-at-the-moment post-apocalyptic genre and giving it a straight-up comedic spin. Will Forte produces and stars as the last man, Phil Miller, while The LEGO Movie and Jump Street helmers Chris Miller and Phil Lord also produce and directed the pilot. That combination of clever and -- particularly in the case of Forte, weirdo -- talent seemed a great recipe for success. And sure enough, the two-episode debut was everything one could hope for from such a premise: hilarious and gross and ingenious yet sad and thoughtful and different from pretty much every other Last Man tale ever filmed.
