Pain is power, The Magicians has taught us, and power is pain. In "The Strangled Heart," that is underlined over and over and over again, and wow, what an excellent hour of television.
Unlike "The World in the Walls," The Magicians has earned the right to do this episode. It's built up these characters and developed these relationships and upped the stakes so that when Penny's most prized possession is something tied to Kady, or Quentin and Alice kiss and mean it, or Eliot kills one of the few people he's opened up to, it carries weight.
