Well, that was a turn for this show that was pretty freaking huge.
The Magicians fully went there in "The Writing Room," and goodness there was some heavy stuff to deal with -- all before the series even hit episode 10. I've talked a lot about the confidence of this show, and that was showcased here. Looking back at the early episodes of this season, it makes so much sense that showrunners Sera Gamble and John McNamara were hurdling through story so they could get to this point when they did.
And this episode was heavy. Not only was it perfectly creepy, but it was a riff on a stereotypical ghost story episode that carried a lot of weight and huge ramifications for the future. It's further proof that your heroes are not your heroes, as Quentin realized by the end with Plover, and also grounds the Fillory stories and the entire series in darkness beyond what the "urban fantasy" genre promised.
