Based on Philip K. Dick's classic novel, The Man in the High Castle tells an alternate history of America, one in which Germany and Japan share control of the land after defeating the nation in World War II. Set in 1962, the former Americans find themselves in the middle of a deepening Cold War between their two conquerors.
The series, which bounced from BBC to Syfy before finding its home on Amazon, is executive produced by Ridley Scott and Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files). The project is a labor of love for Spotnitz, who read the book in college and found that it forever changed the way he thought about the world we live in, and the freedoms we often take for granted.
Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat) praised the project for the depth of Japanese characters portrayed by himself and other actors. He stated that it is a rare chance for him to play a "good guy." Rufus Sewell (Dark City) relished the idea of playing a Nazi who is "humanized", as it shows that its human beings who are capable of genocide, not monsters whom we can't relate to.
