The Marvel Cinematic Universe is complete genius. The 13 movies have grossed more than $10 billion worldwide at the box office alone, and made B and C-tier heroes like Iron Man and Rocket Racoon into household names (and yes, Iron Man was B-tier at best in the mainstream pre-MCU).
Early on Marvel Studios had to give characters like Thor and Captain America their own stand-alone movies to legitimize The Avengers and make the big crossover movie feel like an event. But now Marvel can afford to do the opposite - untested and relatively unknown characters like Black Panther are legitimized by debuts in big crossover films before their solo outings, bolstering their box office pull. Fan favorite characters like The Vision can shine without ever receiving their own films.
