Netflix has officially renewed The Witcher for a fifth and final season as filming commences on Season 4 of the hit fantasy drama.

The renewal announcement from Netflix coincided with the news that The Witcher's fourth (and now penultimate) season has entered production in the UK. Images from a recent table read offer fans a sneak peek at new and returning cast members, including Liam Hemsworth, who is taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia.

One of the images shows Laurence Fishburne, another newcomer for Season 4, reading lines for the fan-favorite character of Regis, officially Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, a medical practitioner and refined gentleman who becomes fast friends with the Witcher after their initial meeting, but also hides a dark secret.

The Witcher secured a fourth season renewal in October 2022, but Netflix has only now given Season 5 the greenlight. The two seasons will be filmed back-to-back and will adapt the remainder of Andrzej Sapkowski's books, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake, to conclude the TV adaptation.

"It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate Season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia," said showrunner and executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. "We're thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski's books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn't be our show if we didn't push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends."

According to the official logline, the fourth season will pick up after the shocking events of the third chapter, which saw Henry Cavill put up one last fight as Geralt before Hemsworth steps in to join Yennefer and Ciri, who are "faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other."

The Witcher executive producers Steve Gaub and Tomek Baginski previously teased Season 4 having a "meta" transition to Hemsworth's Geralt after Cavill departed the show. The actor will also be in good company alongside series mainstays Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Joey Batey as Jaskier.

There is no word on when the fourth season will hit screens yet, but we're one step closer to finding out now cameras are rolling.
