It’ll likely be easy for more cynical TV viewers to turn their nose up at NBC’s new series, This is Us, with its openly emotional music playing over openly emotional moments. However, if you’re willing to embrace the show’s heart on sleeve approach, there’s a lot to appreciate here.
The pilot, airing Tuesday night, introduces us to the main characters, most of whom seem to have no connection other than the fact that they were all born on the same day. As Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and his very pregnant wife, Rebecca (Mandy Moore) celebrate his 36th birthday, she goes into labor. Then there are the twins, Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Kevin (Justin Hartley), also celebrating their 36th birthday – though neither are happy with their lives, as Kate struggles to lose weight, while TV star Kevin plods his way though a hit sitcom he knows is lowest common denominator crap. Meanwhile, Randall (Sterling K. Brown, fresh off his Emmy win for The People v. O.J. Simpson) spends his 36th birthday deciding to make contact with the father who abandoned him when he was born.
