UPDATE: The video was produced before both Chainsaw Man and Bleach’s Thousand Year Blood War received confirmed release date windows for 2022. Even though they are not listed, both are also highly anticipated anime for 2022.

The upcoming year of new anime to watch in 2022 is looking like a feast for anime fans. Whether you're eagerly awaiting the sophomore series of a show you already love or looking for something entirely new, next year is stacked with releases that'll have you eagerly counting down the days until the new year. Here's a list of all the new and returning anime we're most excited about in 2022.

Made In Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Season 2)

Based on the manga by Akihito Tsukushi, this awesome action-adventure series became a cult fave among anime lovers when it was released in 2017. Since then fans have gotten a feature length movie continuing the story, but have been waiting patiently for the second season. This immersive fantasy series is set in a world where a strange series of deep pits and tunnels run under the surface of the land. Known as the Abyss, they are relatively undiscovered. But brave explorers known as Cave Raiders explore them in the hopes of finding strange artifacts. One of those adventurers is our protagonist Riko, who discovers an unexpected family secret that leads her deeper into the Abyss. Though we don't know exactly when, we do know season two will be hitting sometime in 2022 and we can't wait.

Tiger & Bunny Season 2

If you can believe it, it'll be eleven years since season one of Tiger & Bunny debuted by the time the second season hits next year. While it might seem like a long time to wait, it's actually fitting as this series was well ahead of its time. A meta-commentary on the commercialism of superheroes before the MCU became the monolith it is today, Tiger & Bunny is set in the futuristic NYC-inspired NC 1978. Their superheroes are the ultimate celebrities, including the titular heroes. In a post-The Boys age, this is a cult favorite and the original voice actors will be returning to the highly anticipated follow-up. The question is how will Tiger & Bunny have changed to reflect our even more superhero-saturated times.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and produced by Studio Trigger, this spinoff of the controversial Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the biggest anime releases of next year. While the series will take place in Night City, it's an entirely separate story from the game which makes sense after the troubled launch. We don't know much but it will apparently center on a young street kid trying to survive in the futuristic space who decides the best way to make it is to become an "Edgerunner." The mercenary outlaws are also known as Cyberpunks. It all sounds very Blade Runner, just like the game that spawned it. And with the helmer of Promare directing and creative director Hiromi Wakabayashi (Kill la Kill), this is a creative team of champions.

Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2

After that unbelievable heel turn in the first half of season four, viewers are chomping at the bit to find out what's going to happen with Eren Jaeger and his friends in the final episodes of Attack on Titan. The manga from Hajime Isayama and the anime that it inspired have become nothing short of a global cultural phenomenon, which means a lot of fans will be both looking forward to and dreading the second half of season four coming up so soon. It's hard to talk too much about what we want here without massive spoilers, but a redemption arc would be welcome alongside that classic Attack on Titan giant monster action.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

After the record breaking success of Dragon Ball: Super Broly, arguably the most famous anime franchise on Earth is heading back to the big screen with a brand new movie. Original creator Akira Toriyama returns once again to write and provide more character designs for the 21st Dragon Ball movie! Timeline-wise the new flick takes place around the end of Dragon Ball Z in Age 784. Fan favorite characters Goku, Bulma, Piccolo, Vegeta, Broly, and a kindergarten age Pan are confirmed as well as two recently revealed new characters Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. It looks like another action-packed entry into the sprawling anime series that'll once again set the bar for the industry and big screen anime releases in the US.

Uzumaki

Adapting the horror manga master Junji Ito is no mean feat. While many have tried, including numerous live action versions and the 2018 anime anthology series the Junji Ito Collection, Uzumaki looks like it might finally be able to capture the quiet and existential horror that has made Ito such an icon. Sticking far closer to Ito's instantly recognizable style than previous adaptations, Uzumaki collects a haunting set of stories that paint a picture of a small town driven mad by an obsession with spirals. While it may not sound that terrifying on the surface, it's the sort of creepy psychological tale that gets under your skin and haunts your nightmares. So, basically, it's the anime that Ito fans around the world have been waiting for.

Spy x Family

This massively popular manga series by Tatsuya Endo launched in 2019 and gained a huge following, and it's easy to see why. Spy x Family has massive Bat-Family energy as the titular spy has to create the perfect family as a front. That would be a funny enough sentiment but little does he know that his new wife and daughter have secret lives of their own. His faux life partner is actually an assassin and his recently adopted child is a powerful mind reader. If you love action, found family, and comedic takes on the tropes we associate with both, then this is a must read. We're hoping the anime adaptation from Wit Studio and CloverWorks translates that smart humor and heartwarming humor!

Spriggan

Written by Hiroshi Takashige and illustrated by Ryōji Minagawa, the original Spriggan manga inspired a movie that was produced by Studio 4°C and supervised by none other than Akira creator Katsuhiro Ôtomo. Netflix is now taking on that daunting legacy with a new original net animation from David Production. If that sounds familiar it's because they're the studio behind the smash hit JoJo's Bizarre Adventure among a few choice others. In case you've never seen the original or read the manga--fix that!--Spriggan is a cold war set action story that reimagines the historical era when strange "Out of Place Artifacts" begin showing up around the world. Political superpowers begin trying to use them for their own gain, leading to the creation of a private army whose operatives are known as Spriggans.

Kakegurui Twin

This list has covered most of the popular anime subgenres and Kakegurui Twin--based on the manga written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Kei Saiki--offers up some good gambling drama! Spinning off from the immensely popular Kakegurui, this prequel centers on Mary Saotome--one of the antagonists of the original--at the elite and gambling obsessed Hyakkaou Private Academy a year before the mainline story. Hyakkaou is unique in that the students are ranked by their gambling winnings and soon Mary becomes a powerful player in the school hierarchy. This prequel is an exciting chance to get to know Mary better as well as a way to add depth, context, and history to the already beloved series.

Blue Lock

Who doesn't love a good sports manga/anime? The sports story subgenre has long been one of the biggest strengths of the mediums, and in 2018 Blue Lock came along to add a vibrant and engaging new story to the canon. And this highly anticipated anime adaptation of Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura's manga couldn't come soon enough! The story follows Yoichi Isagi, a young amateur soccer player who joins the elite institute known as Blue Lock. In the search for a so-called "Ace Striker," the Japanese football union has gathered hundreds of the best and brightest to make their next team unbeatable. Can Isagi stand out? And will he achieve his goal of becoming the best player on Earth?

There you have it! Those are our top 10 most anticipated anime of 2022.

There are still a lot of anime without release date confirmations, but we’re hoping to see Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 The Movie, and Bleach’s Thousand Year Blood War arc in 2022.
