Sequels are an accepted reality of the Hollywood landscape. Though we see a proliferation of sequels dominating the box office, they're also nothing new to the industry. As franchises become the biggest money makers for studios, there has been a marked shift toward films just being one chapter in a larger story.
But there's something to be said for a movie that can stand on its own. It's often easy to recognize a project that should end when that filmmaker decides to roll the end credits.
