Understanding SubOhm vs dual coil Provari - harsh hits!

I have two e-cigs, an older Provari 2.5 and a new IPV5 subohm. I am having a lot of trouble getting used to my new subohm mod -- the throat hits are killing me and making me cough like crazy! I am using a 0.5 Ohm Atlantis atomizer with it. I also have the .05 ohm atomizer that the kit can use. but it is even harsher.

One observation is that the little Provari with a 1.6 Ohm atomizer is so much smoother and even produces more smoke than the IPV5! It makes no sense to me -- I'm using the same juice in both cigs. The reason I switched to a box mod is because it doesn't seem like the Provari can deliver enough nicotine for my needs, no matter the level of nic.

So what am I doing wrong? I have to turn the wattage down so low on the subohm cig that it produces hardly any smoke to stand the "throat hit." And why doesn't my subohm produce the smoke I see in the commercials? I have tried almost all of the settings to experiment with it. It produces only a bit more smoke than the "little" Provari.

BTW it is not the nic level. I have tried them all. I also use high and even 100 percent VG juice, and still not much smoke.

Thank you for your time and expertise, folks! And if someone can recommend a very smooth juice for the subohm, I would like to try it.

What nicotine level are you using in the IPV5 / Atlantis setup?

I've tried everything from .3 to 1.8. The smaller dose is even more harsh than the 1.8!

Hi Shmoke and welcome to VU, Hopefully some Provari users will chime in on here and help out, hang in there:wave:

I use 18mg nic on the Provari/1.5 ohm
I use 12mg nic on a Flask/1.0 ohm
I use 6mg nic on a Stout/.5 ohm
This strategy is what keeps me satisfied while moving thru wattages, and not OD on nic. All 75-80% vg.

What tank on the ProVari?
You need a lot of juice flow on a .5 to keep coil wet, and prevent harsh hits.

Hi Shmoke. Name notwithstanding it's vapor not smoke, kind of the point. You are going to find that higher nic levels in a sub ohm setup can be quite harsh. The 1.6 is putting out more because you are drawing longer on it and the combination of low voltage and throat hit is restricting what you get from the .5. If you want to make use of both with the same juice then try the 1.0 ohm coil for the Atlantis. With the .5 coil anything more than 6mg (.6%) is going to be harsh. It's also possible that you have a bad coil causing the harshness, switch coils, I'd suggest going to the 1 ohm for now. Also you are vaping mouth to lung with your old setup and likely doing lung hits with the new. Try turning the airflow down along with the power until you are vaping more in the manner you are used to.

What did it tell you? It confused me because it almost seems like he thinks 1.8 is more than 3.
Or that he simply forgot the . when typing.

Thank you for your feedback! I double checked my juices. I have a 1.8% and 3mg/ml (so -0.3% ??)

Both are harsh in the sub-ohm, even with a 1 ohm in the sub machine right now (as someone suggested). Here is what I a getting now:

The Provari vape is nice and cool, so smooth that I can't even tell I am inhaling vapor until I exhale and can actually see it!
The sub-ohm (with 1 ohm now) is a warm, wonderful, rich taste. However it is harsh. I cough like crazy. I can get by if I vape at 1/2 the recommended wattage. It is still harsh though.

At full wattage for the 1 ohm (40-50W), the IPV5 nearly burns my lips and it spits very hot droplets in my mouth. I am using the Atlantis Aspire 2 with it. Is something defective? This can't be normal. There is no way to vape it at recommended wattage unless one has steel lips :)

I am vaping directly into my lungs. The funny thing, there is not that much more smoke from the sub-ohm and never has been. It is on par with the Provari. To answer another question, I have the Aspire Nautilus on the Provari.

I think I will purchase a whole new subohm setup and try it out. Doctor's orders (to switch to vaping). So I have to find a setup that I can live with. My life depends on it. The Provari does not deliver enough nic to me. I am open to suggestions on good sub ohm mods/tanks.

I think I fixed one problem. I just tried the 3mg and it is very smooth. Wow. Maybe I never tried the lower nic level after all. There is still very little smoke. I think I will get another cheap unit just as a "reality check."

Some coils will spit until broken in, and defective coils are not rare either.

However, the Aspire Triton 0.5 Clapton coils work in the Atlantis 2. Not harsh, and the Claptons ramp up a little slower, which might be a good thing.

The ipv5 should be fine, but make sure it is running in power mode, not temp control, unless you use a temp control capable coil. Some of these newer mods come new set to temp control as a default, showing wattage as well as temp or joules.

Also, maybe use a q-tip to remove any juice from inside the chimney, below or inside that wide bore drip tip, and in the base, below the coil, where juice may be flooding.

The flavor of the juice can be a factor, as well as pg vg ratio. Some are sensitive to pg, and a 70/30 juice with higher vg could be helpful to reduce harshness and increase vapor, especially in sub ohm.

Thank you for the helpful post! I also found some stainless steel (0.4 Ohm) coils. These should work with the temp control and give me more options to experiment with. Some of the problems I was having was user error :) The recommended wattage I was finding on the Internet did not match the wattage range stamped on the coils! I was trying to use way too many watts.

I have never been crazy about the IPV5. I will try the Wismec Reuleaux RX200s Mod. Unless someone knows of a better mod that has SS TC. The IPV5's TC only works with their own specialized tank, which I tossed in the garbage where it belonged.

I am finding that the flavor of the juices do indeed make a huge difference. Thanks for everybody's help.

The VT 133 watt dna 200 is a really good mod for a decent price. Two 18650 batteries.

The G2 is another great mod at a decent price.

The missing issue not discussed is probably the problem - when you say it's "harsh" I don't think that's mostly the nic - you aren't getting enough juice to the coil, or you don't have enough airflow for the subohm setup.

Typically, for a lower resistance coil, you need some more airflow.

Things to try:
1 - What voltage are you vaping the Provari at? FInd something that's COMPARABLE (similar watts - use an ohms law calculator) for a 0.5 ohm coil and try vaping a little under that setting on the IPV.
2 - try a new coil
3 - open up the airflow a little more than you're used to, and take a shorter hit perhaps until you're used to it

Any better vapor now?

Also, if no one mentioned, priming a sub ohm coil is more involved. A few drops of juice in the wicking holes, a few more down the center, let sit 15 minutes depending on the coil, take a few primer pulls wirh no power, start low around 20w, gradually increase. Improves coil life and vapor quality.

There are new 0.4 and 0.5 Atlantis EVO Clapton coils that are compatible too.

The ipv5 should do SS TC, but I heard some had issues defaulting to the Pure mode you are referring to. There may be YouTube videos or other online info on how to get past this. SS can work in power or TC mode, though there are multiple types of SS, and some mods might need TCR to be set for some coils.

The rx200 though shaped nice and long battery life is big and heavy. I prefer the mod suggestions above. Also hear the Vapor Flask mods are nice.

For cheap and small, I like the Cuboid. But its heavier to an extent. If I were serious about TC, I would go the dna200 route, but I prefer power mode.
