Time for another review,today i will be reviewing the Uwell Caliburn Explorer Pod Kit that was sent to me by my friends over at Sourcemore for the purposes of this review.
This may appear like a simple run of the mill garden variety pod device but it does have one innovative feature.
Same cartridge can hold 2 different flavors of e-liquid,so yeah let us start and see how this works.
As per my usual MO i will start off with some nice pics for those that don't have much time but want to know the basics of the device i will be reviewing.
All the pertinent information in one quick glance so here it goes:
Unboxing and first impressions:
Gotta admit the box looks cool,even has a cut out covered in a transparent plastic that shows you the color of the pod,this makes it easier to choose a color since you can see it right there.
Slide the cover out and you see the pod and a small box on the side that includes the Type-C charging cable and 2 extra coils.
The cartridge is already in the pod and it has 2 coils pre-installed,one of them is the 0.8 ohm and the other is the 1.2 ohm coil.
The 2 extra coils you get are also another 0.8 ohm coil and a 1.2 ohm coil,so in total you getting 4 coils with these kit,not bad.
Small ribbon on the side which when lifted will show you a little cardboard like envelope that contains the usual paperwork, things like warranty card,instruction book etc.
The pod itself looks good,sleek and sexy all in black.
The Chassis Material is made of Aluminum-Alloy and it does have a certain weight to it,it does hold a 1000mAh battery but no worries the weight isn't a problem.
Charging port is at the bottom and in the front of the pod you have a button shaped like a cross,this button is the one you use to turn on/off the device and to choose what mode you want to vape in.
No worries this is an auto draw device so no need to push the button to vape,to get the pod started up just press any button 5 times and you ready to go into business.
Operation of the cross shaped button is as follows:
Press left: Only using the left side of the cartridge.
Press right: Only using the right side of the cartridge
Press down: You will alternate between flavors,one puff you will be vaping the e-liquid from one side and then the next puff you will vaping from the other side of the cartridge.
Press up: You will be using both of the sides of the cartridge meaning you will be vaping 2 different flavors at once.
Each time you press one of the 4 parts of the cross shaped button the lights will go on in the following way:
Press left the left button will go on,press right the right button will go on,press down both button will go on but just one at a time and at intervals and if you press up both lights will go on.
If you have the 0.8 ohm coils installed and you use both of them at the same time (press up on the cross shaped button) you will be vaping at a whopping 32 watts.
Vaping time:
Ok so instead of using my usual Shiva e-liquid i am going full in for the review and putting in two different flavors.
Keep in mind the cartridge that holds 4ml e-liquid (non TPD version,TPD version holds 2 ml total) is divided in 2 parts, each side of the cartridge has a rubber tab so you can fill the cartridge with any flavor of your choosing.
I rarely deviate from my usual aromas so i had limited choices for 2 different types of e-liquid,i finally settled on filling the left side with an Apple Ice flavor and Cola Ice on the other.
Looking down at the drip tip you see that it has a little plastic in the middle which separates both sides,this is important because i will mention it later when it comes to cons and pros.
Ok so i press left and give my Apple Ice flavor a try.....dang,that is one tasty vape.
I lay back in my chair and vape slowly,after a couple of minutes its time to give the right side a try,i press the button and i feel that Ice Cola making its way to my lungs.
To be honest i prefer the 0.8 ohm coil,that is more in my wheelhouse but the 1.2 ohm coil ain't bad either,just a matter of personal preference.
After trying both flavors separately i decide the give the ''alternate'' mode a try,i press down and give it a go.
Yep this works,one puff is Apple Ice and the next puff is Ice Cola and that cycle just repeats itself.
Gotta be honest,don't see myself using this feature,it's nice to have but one puff of each flavor is just weird but maybe someone out there likes it.
Ok moving on to the last of the modes available in this mod,i press up which means i will be getting both flavors at the same time.
Apart from the fact that my choice of flavors doesn't really go together (at least for me,taste varies from person to person) but yeah i am getting both flavors at the same time.
Although this does not have an airflow feature perse but if you remove the cartridge and turn it around then put it back in again you will get a different vape experience,one way it will be a bit more restricted than the other.
Now about the cartridge itself,personally i didn't enjoy using only one side (one coil),does feel a bit airy because even thou the cartridge is separated but you still puffing from the other side and not getting anything which makes the vape more airy.
PROS:
-Sleek looking
-Aesthetics and design are top notch
-Innovation is good,Uwell went ahead and got their idea out in the real world
-Sturdy device,solid and feels durable
-Uwell coils are very good
CONS:
-If you use both coils at the same time it means you are using twice amount of coils.
Economically speaking that is a con,you can get the same performance from any other pod device and just use the one coil
-If you vape only one side it will be airy due to the opening on the other side of the drip tip,some pure MTL users might not get the MTL vaping experience they are looking for.
Would i recommend this device:
Hmm tough question.
Gotta be honest here,i think this is a device oriented towards a niche group of vapers.
If on a daily basis you enjoy 2 flavor of e-liquid and you also like the combination of those 2 together then this is the device for you.
But keep in mind if you using dual coil mode you will be using 2 coils at the same time which will result in more cost for you...just sayin'
Also another thing to keep in mind is that no two e-liquids are the same,some will degrade your coil faster than the other.
If that happens then what do you do? replace just the one coil that is done and gives no flavor or while you're at it you might as well replace both?
See what i am trying to say? just seems this pod is for a very niche of very specific type of vapers.
Personally i would just acquire one of the many other pod like devices that Uwell has and if you want to mix and match some different types of e-liquid just do some basic alchemy and you will get the same results and save some money when it comes to buying coils.
