Vapers tongue? Loss of flavour?

Hi people , hope you are good.

I have recently realised I have been making my flavours wayyy too strong from the beginning.

I recently vaped a very strong rootbeer flavour, that I LOVED. Being in the UK, I had not tried rootbeer, but it was a very strong flavour.

I now can hardly detect flavours. Is there a way I can kind of re-train my tongue, to be able to taste again? At the moment, all I can really taste is a chocolate fudge brownie mix that is quite strong.

I was loving all the flavours, but it seems now I can not taste them. I tried some flavours I had sitting that I could taste fine before, using fresh wick, and I could not taste ANYTHING. Maybe a slight sweetness, but that was it.

Has anyone else had this problem, as I am sure I read about something called 'vapers' tongue?

Should I maybe go unflavoured for a while, and introduce flavours at the correct percentage slowly maybe?

Any advice would be great, as I am really enjoying vaping, but I mainly vape for the flavour as I am not a smoker, and have spent a pretty penny on many mods, one should be arriving tomorrow aswell.

I really need to get my taste back. Any help would be much, much appreciated.

Yes try unflavored!

Drink lots of water, brush your teeth etc. With any luck it won't last too long, but you should be able to speed things up by just vaping unflavored for now.
Ok thank you, Il make sure to drink plenty of water, and go unflavoured for a week or so, and ensure I brush my tongue as well as my teeth.

It sucks man! At least I know I can get the taste back though.

Well unflavoured is exactly that-no flavour at all. I used to be able to taste the sweetness of the VG or PG, but it tastes of nothing. I will do this for a week or so, I do forget to drink while vaping-I drink more than enough fluid throughout the day, but I should have a sip of water every few pulls I guess.

I am going to give it a week or so, try some juice at a low level, see if I can detect it. I have a juice steeping, unicorn milk clone, so in 7 days I will break that out, and see if I can taste it, as at the moment its a no no, just sweet.

I looked online for some cures-one was shock your taste buds with menthol. I had menthol. Blow your head off menthol. I added 8 drops to 15 ML, and that is super menthol there. If I can not taste like normal tommorow, it will be unflavoured for the week.

What I've noticed with a fresh change is it takes a few rounds to get the full flavor. Mouthwash helps also. Whenever I lose the flavor I brush my teeth, rince with mouthwash. Wait 20 minutes or so and bam flavor comes right back. Also I've noticed dry mouth can cause flavor loss as well. Keep hydrated and vape on. Gl.

Everything everyone else has said, is good advice. Strong flavors are ok, just switch different ones more often. Eating something spicy, also works for me. Of course, any excuse to eat hot wings...

I used unflavoured for a while, and it was exactly that-unflavoured. I then used a menthol flavour as I read this can help cure it, went back to unflavoured, and can now detect flavours at 5%. I can taste the sweetness and the actual flavour.

At least I know I can 'reset' my buds, and fairly quickly. I am using blueberry muffin at the moment, and can taste the sweetness and the hint of blueberry. Quite amazing actually.

I thought unflavoured would have a sweetness from the VG or PG, but it literally had no detectable flavour, it was so odd. It was then I realised i DO still have taste, I just had to kind of re learn my flavour levels.

Vaping quite happily now. Oh yeah, there is something definitely wrong with FA Caramel cappucino. I tried 10%, its got a weaker garlic, but it is still there. Next time I will try 5 and below. This one is actually vapeable, although not the best flavour.

FA Caramel Capuccino? Nope, flavor art doesn't make this - TFA perhaps?

I'm dealing with vapers tongue right now actually . Drinking alot of water and eating apples to help cleanse my pallet and speed up the process. I thought at first it was my batch of replacement coils....

But yes... smoke unflavored for a while, brush your teeth and tongue more often and eat apples.
That usually helps for me and within a week or two i'm back to normal.

drinking water and time have been the only cures that ever worked for me. if i feel it starting a take a break for a couple hours. eat dinner, etc.

Just had this happen. Totally new to vaping and the Kanger Nano was recommended. Totally enjoying the flavor and was getting a lot of spitting from it...I thought this was normal..HAH ...well, I enjoyed the flavor for a day and now I cannot taste anything but the sweetness. Figures, because now all my flavors are starting to arrive...

So, I will be heading to the vape shop to look for a non flavored one as suggested. Anything specific I need to ask for other then 0nic and max vg? (my personal preference) Also, will a minty flavor help, if I have a peppermint patty type of flavor mixed or just a menthol?

I keep a tank of strong menthol handy. When I start to sense a loss of flavor I vape the menthol for a while, maybe an hour or so. After vaping the menthol you can literally taste everything. I've been doin this for months and it seems to work for me. The last time i had vapers tongue it lasted for almost 10 days and it was horrible.

It really is, never would of guessed it possible. And I order all these yummy sounding flavors that I will have to shelve for what seems forever!

Thanks for the idea, I think I will grab a spare tank and keep some strong menthol flavor in it and try that!

Either unflavored or radically switch to something like a strong citrus mix... I every once in a while go on my Anise binge and after a day or two I cannot taste anything

Yes, mint will help. You can also brush your teeth often (don't ) forget the tongue. Sometimes spicy food helps , or ginsing. Is that the only flavor you have now? Your taste buds might be just tired of THAT flavor. Switch out flavors often.

Hi people-this was quite a while back now-it happens occasionally, when it does I switch to strong menthol for the day and the next day its gone :).

I bought a few flavors from the head shop I got the kit from - a strawberry donut which I started with (I think my problem might of been when I first tried it I bumped it real high, got a lot of spitting so I was getting a lot of juice on my tongue..thought that was normal and continued to do that for the whole next day. After that was when I lost flavor) - I also got a milk flavored (girl said it was supposed to be a poptart milkshake...but no, it really wasn't) a peach tea, and when I found an actual vape shop I had them mix me up a blueberry cake but by the time I got to any of those I had lost flavor. Now I am getting all my others in, bacon, a vanilla custard/marshmellow/butterscotch mix and a bunch of others...

Can't taste them now though!, I'll hit the vape shop and look for a real strong mint of menthol to switch to and keep the watt low, hopefully keep from having it happen again. =(

Yeah the only good thing about vapers tongue is you get to vape the shitty juice you got suckered into buying. lol

Glad I came across this thread because this happened to me a few days ago and I've been wondering what was going on. This explains it all and I'm glad this is a normal thing, I will have to try the menthol and see how it goes.
I too just got a bunch of new flavors and have not been getting the flavors I know they have.

I do believe if you switch to menthol for the day-or even UNFLAVOURED as that works too, you realise that unflavoured really is unflavoured, a very strange sensation-the menthol works well, but I would then say try some unflavoured juice, just keep a small bottle made up-use it for an hour or so and even 3% will taste strong :).

I thought I would add that to the 'cure' I mentioned, as it really does make you realise what NO flavour is like, it is surreal-you realise even with vapers tongue you could taste something-just not the subtle notes and main flavour :).

Waiting on my juice order has me vaping on my back up juice the last couple days. I might have to try that spicy food trick.

Got me some form of Menthol flavored today..called Ice, and I see why. One hit is like sucking on an iced cube..kind of neat. BUT, I was able to start tasing the cinnamon teddy grams I got...Purrrrr..

Thanks for all the awesome help on this. Lowered myself down to 23 and I will keep it at that. Got a spare tank with the menthol loaded so every so often I can just load it up and take a few hits. Seems to work great!!

You guys rock, and I am so glad I found this post!

I never hear of this one at least from what I have read from many.

Ever eat sushi?
You know that ginger they give you to cleanse your pallette inbetween different pieces of sushi?

Yeah that stuff... Suck on that ginger or eat it whichever you prefer...This is a very awesome pallette cleanser!

It's strange though-generally every tank or dripper I use is a new flavour , I use a few throughout the day. I think I vape TOO much if I am honest. I used to get a day and a half out of my dual battery devices, now I am lucky to get 3/4's of a day. Think I will ease on the vaping a bit, as I think a hit every 30 seconds is causing loss of flavour (I don't do this constantly, for about 5 minutes every 30 seconds or so, then put it down, then again in 20-30 minutes or so.

Contrary to what most people think vapors tongue has nothing to do with your mouth. What you are experiencing is actually quite normal. It's called olfactory fatigue. Essentially, your sense of taste got bored and started to ignore what it's been sensing for the past couple of hours. Tank users like me experience this all the time because we tend to stick to one flavor for a long time. Some people call it "vapers tongue" but the term is inaccurate because it has nothing to do with your tongue. Your tongue only senses five things: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. That's it.

Your olfactory receptor is in your nasal cavity (the reason you can't taste food if you hold your nose and eat) so no amount of brushing your teeth, gargling, etc will help.

What will help can be as simple as changing your flavor of liquid. A radical flavor change will shift your olfactory attention to the new taste. Then there is a technique perfumers, chocolatiers, tea traders, anyone who relies on their sense of taste/smell has used for hundreds of years, taking deep inhales of fresh coffee grounds. Don't inhale the grounds themselves. There is a specific enzymatic molecule in coffee that resets your olfactory receptor. Try this out and see If it works for you.
