"Two Journeys" actually juggled three journeys and handled them very well - each arc filled with its own twist, ranging from small-but-meaningful to epic and show-changing.
For Ragnar and Ivar's shipwrecked tale, the turn was Ragnar's decision to separate from the ingrates that made up his raiding party and just hoof it alone with his son. Through this, Ragnar was able to bond with his Ivar and appreciate him in ways that Ivar was able to cherish. Of course, we can presume that Ragnar was only able to truly appreciate Ivar's obstacles because he himself had been humbled and disgraced. He now knew what it was like to have others think you're out of favor with the gods. Previously, in his glory, Ragnar was totally unable to see Ivar as anything but a blight.
