Volkswagen's Diesel Cheat Will Cost It Dearly

The cost of cheating the system for Volkswagen will end up costing more than the $7.4 billion USD the company allotted for costs relating to its diesel-emission scandal.

According to Reuters, Volkswagen's CEO Matthias Mueller said the money currently earmarked by the company only covers costs associated with the recall of vehicles affected by the scandal. "I can only speculate about any further provisions," Mueller said.

Volkswagen found itself in hot water over devices it installed in its diesel vehicles to help them cheat emissions standards. In lab settings, their cars would register as cleaner than they actually are. According to the Telegraph, Volkswagen has been installing the software in its vehicles for at least 6 years, and cars that had the cheating software installed would sometimes run up to 40 times above the legal limits placed on nitrogen oxide emissions.
