The Walking Dead's executive producers have claimed that they did not tone down the violence after the bloody season 7 premiere despite executive producer Gale Anne Hurd's saying otherwise earlier this month.
Showrunner Scott M. Gimple told Entertainment Weekly that the baseball bat beating scene in the premiere was always intended to be more violent than anything that came after in the new season. The torture the show's protagonists go through in the premiere "was very specific to that episode and the beginning of this whole new story," and Gimple doesn't believe "that's the base level of violence that necessarily should be on the show."
