One of the biggest things in eliminating the breakin period on cotton wicks is very clean hands ie just washed and handle the part of the cotton you will be keeping in the atty none or as little as possible.
Skin oil tastes bad.

This is a great point that i need to be more fastidious about myself.

Cotton has a fairly distinctive taste -- chew on some [clean] bluejeans, you'll see. :D

As for skin oils... I dunno. I've never had an issue, but I typically do keep my hands quite clean, because anything greasy or tacky on my hands drives me completely batshit -- I just put some lotion on my hands, because I just did the dishes and my hands were feeling really dry, and now I just can't wait till the lotion absorbs so I don't feel it anymore. :D I never use lotion with any oils or perfumes, due to eczema, so it will absorb PDQ... meantime, it drives me crazy, feeling it.

If you feel something on your hands that isn't supposed to be there, then yeah, definitely wash up before handling the wick! A good way to tell if your hands are clean... look at your nails! If you can see ANYTHING under them... those hands aren't clean. And when you build a coil, it's a good idea to flame it before you twist it, then pulse it 5-6 times after you get it mounted, and then rinse; that will remove anything foreign/objectionable on the wire (machine oil or anything else, including the oils on your skin).

Puffs from Amazon. $7 for a big bag that will last me for almost a year.

For Kanthal,

You are never, ever supposed to flame SS - pretty sure that goes for the other wires besides kanthal also.

But, you can rinse it well before twisting and then light pulsing

I didn't think of that, since I've used wire other than kanthal so VERY rarely. This is just one more reason why -- other wire is just too damn finicky and *special* -- and SS tastes like you stuck a fork into an electrical outlet and then into your mouth. :blech:

I get the opposite - kanthal tastes biting down on a metallic gum wrapper, lol

ATM, I am living in a long term studio suite at the Residence Inn by Marriott.

The maid threw out my Japanese cotton swab (ony brought one from home) so I was forced to purchase some Cotton Bacon .

Works great but my pads are just easier to work with.

I agree, what I really dislike about Cotton Bacon is the pre-cut strips. There's a good amount of waste but personally I believe that's by design so you use more than what it would be if it was just a single coiled up strip. But I do like the CB Prime alot so I put up with it, with CB V2 though I much prefer Koh gen Do.

I have some cotton bacon left, and it’s some fine stuff indeed, albeit a tad expensive.

I thought my native wicks cotton would be good, on account of it being all parallel fibres, but tbh it hasn’t been great.

Ordered a bag of puff Japanese organic cotton.
