What cotton?

I'm thinking of getting my first rta. I see they offer cotton on most of the vape websites but I was wondering if just getting any organic cotton from the average store is ok? Cotton balls, face pads etc? What is safe and good to use?

I use Koh Gen Do and Muji. There are fancier vape specific cotton strips available for a lot more money but these work beautifully and the packs last forever. After 2 years of vaping on rebuildables I haven't managed to finish off a full pack of either the KGD or the Muji.

Amazon. If you click on the names in my post it will take you straight to the pages. I always forget to mention that I put links. Sorry about that. There's also an Amazon Prime listing for the Muji here but it's a $1.44 more. The KGD pads are quite a bit larger than the Muji pads but you get a lot more pads with the Muji pack.

Cotton bacon is definitely the easiest to use. Rayon is second easiest and cheapest, followed by KGD pads. But I use cotton bacon more than anything else these days.

Organic cotton balls from your local drug store. $4 for a bag that will last over a year. Unroll them and you have your own cotton bacon.

Rayon sends chills down my spine...I hate the feeling of it between my fingers and the light squeaky noises it makes when pinched or rubbed....getting damn goosebumps think about it!!!!

Native Wick Platinum Blend is just like Cotton Bacon V2 but one long strip in a package....its also very nice to use!

They dont taste anything like cotton bacon....atleast for a tank or 2.

I have bags of Cotton Balls, Muji, Ko gen do squares, surgical cotton, Pima and Supima and all of them have a nasty taste for a few tanks. I prefer Rayon over any of these as Rayon only has a slightly off taste for a few draws then it disappears.

Lol. I know that feeling you're talking about, I hate it, but thankfully I don't get it from rayon

If I'm really careful to cut all the cotton off that touched my fingers, I don't typically get any off tastes from any of the cotton I've used before

When I was younger, I got in a debate with my friends about that sensation. Surely it has some kind of technical name, or even a descriptive name sort of like Deja vu, but...we could never find it.

IMO it comes down to preference. Having tried all kinds of cotton I use plain old balls from walmart. Yes, the pads from Japan and the Vaping specific cotton (pads) can be easier to wick. Especially at first. Me, Cotton is cotton, once you figure out how to use it. It all tastes the same when you get a dry hit. Boil all store bought and non Vape cotton. All cotton works better after a good boiling and complete drying, ALL cotton. But mainly because of the bleach and peroxide used to process the cotton. I grab a hand full from the wife's makeup supply every 6 months or so. Boil the heck out of it (2 or more water changes), then dry it. 1 ball makes at least a couple weeks worth of wicks. Rewicking daily.

To everyone who's applies, what's a good build for flavor and vapor? It would be a dual coil build on a griffin 25

Stainless fused claptons. Or stainless regular claptons, depending on what kind of watts you want.

Me I've used

Cotton Bacon
Cotton Balls
Supima
Elfwick
Native Wick
Mujj
Sterilized Medical Cotton

Plus a number of others, favorite so far is Native Wick Platinum. But what I always come back to is Koh gen Doh, 80 pads for around $10 on Amazon. Easy to use, right size and wicks very well.

Organic, non bleached cotton balls work, of course. But they're a pain in the ass to get right. You really need to pull it apart, try get it all flowing the same direction and do a kind of Scottish roll with it. Too much hassle. Get some cheap Koh Gen Do as suggested.

I've tried various brands and types of cotton, I like Cotton Bacon for it's toughness and that stuff is super burn resistant. But I too keep going back to Koh Gen Do.

Got some nice Irish cotton recently though, which is actually nicer! It's called Celtic Cotton, not sure if you can get it over there.

Would just 100% cotton balls from Walmart work?
They work for me..... they taste like they are peroxide bleached. If you dry hit a new one. But since ALL cottons works better after a good boiling anyway. No problem. I have tried all kinds of cotton. I can't tell the difference when vaping. Only difference to me is the build and prep processes. Balls followed by rayon rope probably have the steepest learning curves and can be harder to get right. As far as cotton wicks go... Meshes and silica may actually be the most difficult to master.

That sounds like a MAJOR pain in the ass just to get some wick. Why not just use organic?
VapeNotik has good hemp.
As does eWick

Yep, @ $11 for 80 very large pads of Koh gen Do from Amazon I can't see why anyone would want to go through the hassle of boiling cotton balls from Wally World, then the major PiA to use them for wicking. Koh gen Do is so damn easy to use, cutting the pads then using the Scottish Wick is easy. It's fluffs up very nicely and is very easy to use. Plus cutting the strips you get the same amount of cotton in each coil. Also for me I really do love the entire ritual of fluffing, wicking and what not. For me it's relaxing, I think that's a huge reason why I always go back to it. I'm not fast with my wicking at all, hell on average I take about 10-15 min's just to wick. Oh when I have to I can wick in no time, but I really do just like kicking back, fluffing, getting the cotton "just right" in the RDA or RTA. Guess I'm getting old, but the ritual for me is a large part of the enjoyment of Vaping.

Nah, it's not your age - it IS relaxing. I met a few vapers downtown the other day, and you would be surprised at how many people have adopted vaping as more of a lifestyle than just a hobby.

These muji's rock, exact same that I picked up. Got more than one pack and seems daunting looking at 500 of the things.

Yeah Muji is good, I went through a bag and then I tried Koh gen Do. What I like about Koh gen Do is the larger pads and it is fluffier than Muji and seems to wick a bit better (well for me that is).

Anyway yeah Japanese cotton is great, easy to work with, great wicking properties and best of all damn cheap ;)

Why pay $11 for cotton, I'm going to boil.... See I boil ALL cotton, and NOT because of the processing chemicals. I boil it for PERFORMANCE reasons. I have just found that boiled cotton works better for me. To me all cotton tastes the same boiled or not.

I think if anyone was caught in the 1800's 'tootle puffing an electric cigarette' they would've been lynched on the spot. Regardless of which cotton they used to wick it with. haha.

And for the folks who vape in the UK, don't vape the yellow cotton. (see #4)

It was more of his take on boiling things ;) Boiling was the main way things were cooked, if cooked at all....it was the best method to prevent getting Polio and other malicious diseases

500.. pads or 500 packages? Hoping you meant pads, that'd be more than enough. 500 packages I could probably stuff a few pillows, maybe a mattress and still have wick left over lmao.
