While Star Trek: Discovery is boldly hurtling through its freshman season on CBS All Access, the franchise's big screen future is a little more nebulous.
Back in July 2016, days before Star Trek Beyond was released, Paramount, Bad Robot and Skydance announced that they were at work on Star Trek 4, which would feature Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk somehow crossing paths with his long-dead father, George (Chris Hemsworth), who heroically sacrificed himself aboard the USS Kelvin on the day Jim was born. The pitch was apparently cooked up by J.J. Abrams, director of the 2009 reboot and its 2013 sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, and despite having no script, the idea was apparently impressive enough to get the studio and Hemsworth on board.
