Sorry to hear that about your brother.. You know I'll be praying for him..@Break-19, @Whiskey, @Huckleberried, @Thejackson5, @always9988, @itsmenotyou, @Liz Wonder (she's right here, her itty-bitty cutesie self, beside me), @vuJim (thanks for the administrative/Win10WhenIWantIt help), Boat, and all within this thread, @Whiskey's Corner -
Good morning/afternoon, and thank you to those who were moved by my post, and wrote kind words about it.
I am a very blessed person. Regardless of the cruel words spoken by my younger brother last night, I awoke this morning to Carole King's song "You're Beautiful (As You Feel)," coming from Liz's smartphone, as she cajoled me into wakefulness.
My brother is lonely, and hurting. That can evoke every bad memory a person may possess, in order to make one's self feel better. That, in my humble opinion, sums everything up.
To @Whiskey: Don't buy the Ford Escape. Consumer Reports didn't give it but an 'average' rating, and front/side collision ratings matter.
Especially when you live in an area that can become snowbound. Most folks, in order to improve gas mileage (and, save nearly $4K off of the sticker price), go with the front-wheel-drive version. Even with Ford's EcoBoost engine lineup (which, is good) - All-Wheel-Drive setups suck the power out of an engine.
Not good, when you're stuck on a snowed-in road on a hill.
LW and Liz's recommendation:
2016 Subaru Forester
Just in crash test ratings alone, it is WAY ahead of the Escape. The fit and finish of the vehicle is very well-engineered; i.e., the distance between the door edges and the cabin entries are CONSISTENT.
Which means, less road noise; better door sealing when shut, and - better resale or trade-in value. Not to mention crash protection within the vehicle's 'crumple zones.'
Ford's power windows, especially the rear ones, have sucked for years. In the crossovers, you can thank Mazda for that.
Ford crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. Especially Ford trucks, and SUVs. They may be workhorses, but they are nowhere near Dodge, GM, Nissan and Toyota when it comes to fit and finish - exterior, and interior. Or, anywhere near Subaru.
These observations are from Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Consumer Reports and Edmunds.
Throw in Subaru's asymmetrical all-wheel drive, automatic braking when a front-end collision is imminent, and even though it's powered by Subaru's 4-cylinder, water-cooled Boxer engine -
The torque is amazing, for an engine that size. Keep replacing the synthetic oil, filters, spark plugs and coil packs - and you've got an engine that'll last well over 300K miles. A friend of ours has a 2000 model year, four-door Legacy.
Odometer: 348,000
Hope this helps, @Whiskey.
LW & Liz (our next vehicle is a Subaru, for those Colorado winters)
Hi again. We're vaping P.O.E.T. Nonna Torta Ai Limone (in English - Grandmother's Lemon Cake)
Italian lemon cake (at least in MY grandmother's recipe) is sweetened by clover honey (expensive to buy, as getting the honey nectar out of small flowers is probably an @$$ ache).
It takes the acid edge off of the lemon flavor (she peeled the lemons, crushed them in a culinary pestle), and poured everything into a sieve. Then, through something that looked like cheesecloth.
It was a two day process, as she had to go to work at a sausage and hot dog processing plant. My mother helped out, too - much to Nonna's chagrin (we called her Nana, around our friends - Pa and Ma didn't allow us to speak in Italian, around our 'American' friends - hell, we were born here, too!).
Back to the e-liquid. It is SO yummy. It takes me back further than my haircut. Liz likes it, too. But, she has beautiful curly hair; I, however, shave. Our weather's looking gloomy, this evening. Snow? As the Southerners say, down here:
"@#*! me runnin'!"
If I were back home, or in Colorado - the infrastructure is there to plow, salt roads, and allow us to go where we need to.
Down here, they spray the roads with salt water, and chemicals. It doesn't work, after a couple of inches of snow fall. Which means -
Stores close. Gas stations, too - unless you drive to the nearest city by an Interstate artery - and pay STUPID retail markups.
We're ready. We have wood for the fireplace. Water in the tub. @#*! Not again. Coloradooooooooo... we can't wait to be there...
LW & Liz (we're going to depart for a bit - we'll be back later, under LW control - she dislikes writing, typing, et cetera - her hands shake a little, since her H1N1 episode in 2014)
You have a big and wonderful heart @Loveworks, It's a common misconception that success is measured by money but the true fact is that it is measured by the love in your heart. You are a lucky man to have what you want in life "Liz" and I am very happy for you both. My wife and I have had 42 wonderful years together and as you have said, yes she's the one for me!!! I couldn't be happier.Going through myriad pages sounds too much like what @Breazy_Com does ... sorry if Liz and I missed anything, as everyone's posts here MATTER.
I'm just so tired. I had a lengthy conversation with my brother; it was bittersweet, somewhat sad - but, a new place to start. Liz and I have each other - he has no one to love, and be loved back from.
He works in the film industry; he recently completed a shoot (upcoming film) with actresses Jane Fonda and Jennifer Aniston in co-starring lead roles.
His assessment of Jennifer Aniston:
"Whoa. When she comes on set, everyone - male, and female - are amazed by her natural beauty."
Jane Fonda?
"She's amazing. In her seventies, she still turns heads. It must be in the genes."
We talked about times past, unresolved animosities - it was long overdue. Myself being the eldest, I suppose he held me to a higher standard - a standard, apparently - I failed, miserably.
Even though I was college-educated, and a supposedly consummate musician... still, I didn't measure up. I didn't have success like he did - hell, he can go to Las Vegas - and lose $20K without skipping a beat.
As for me, I've never had that much liquidity stashed away at any one time.
Yet, as I lie here next to Liz's curly hair, I'm happy and content. Saddened, yes - from my brother's comments, who assumed that I never earned an honest wage as a working musician - I did well, received my 1099s every year since '85 (and, before that, filing self-employed) - and, I paid taxes just like every other working American.
It was a rough road for me, yes - yet, I wonder which one of us ended up being happier. He, or myself? He is still a medical **********patient for sciatica, while my body and brain chemistry will not permit me to pursue that avenue.
Do I judge him? No. Does he judge me? Apparently, yes - since I've turned him down in the past to join him in Atlantic City.
What a shame. I was the son who ended up being a caregiver to a dying grandfather; a dying mother, while raising youngsters; later, my father, who passed in 2006, as my marriage crumbled... eventually, that was the beginning of my end. Divorce. Car accident, as a passenger in my son's car... the financial collapse in the later part of the Millennium decade... then, homelessness, and despair.
Soon, the arrival of access programs helped me survive with type-1 diabetes. The gift of a guitar from my cousin, to help me earn a meager (but enjoyable - I love to play and sing) income as a street musician. Then, after several months chatting with Liz online, we decided to meet.
We took our time, and really got to know one another. She showed up one time at a shelter I was staying at, wearing a stunning black dress, and heels.
I knew then, and there - she was the one that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. When you love someone more than you love ANYTHING - yourself, your music - everything... that's it.
One more shelter later, she brought me my first Ego-T. I quit smoking, and became a vapester. I supported my habit with street music. I got my first street performer license. Though I had to use a wheelchair for long distances, I had help. Thanks, R.
Then, one evening - I was in the shelter cafeteria. One of the deputies who worked nights, came up to me, and said:
"There's someone here to see you. You've got five minutes."
I wheeled out on my rollator backward, following the deputy. When I turned around -
There was Liz. She said, "Get your stuff. We're going home."
In 13 June, we'll be together five years - and, moving to Colorado.
To answer the earlier question about who was happier - myself, or my brother -
It's safe to say that I am. I love you, Liz .
LW & Liz (we hope that I wasn't too long-winded, just to answer @Jimi's question )
