Whoopi Goldberg Wants Song of the South to Be Available

Whoopi Goldberg, the voice of Shenzi the hyena in The Lion King, has stated her desire to see the controversial 1946 film Song of the South made available in the United States of America. While Disney is usually quite happy to revisit (and remake) their classic films for the sake of their adoring fans, Song of the South has been unavailable in the USA since its 1986 40th anniversary theatrical re-release.

The film, a combination of live-action and animation, is notable as Disney's first live-action musical but has been criticized ever since its original 1946 release for its controversial depiction of its African American characters. However, elements of Song of the South remain present in popular culture, such as the Academy Award-winning song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and the Disney ride Splash Mountain. Additionally, the movie has remained available in other countries, with the ersatz ban only existing in America.
