With close to 7 million subscribers and over 900 million lifetime views, Lilly Singh is an established brand on YouTube. The 27-year-old is a comedian, vlogger, rapper and motivational speaker, and in 2015 she set out to become a filmmaker when she decided to make a documentary about of her world tour, A Trip to Unicorn Island.
Unicorn island, she explained to me during an interview at the YouTube Space in Los Angeles, is "a synonym for my happy place." The film, also called A Trip to Unicorn Island, offers fans an inside look at Singh's struggles that she had to overcome on the 26-city tour, including a battle with depression and her fight for happiness.
Though she had several parties interested in releasing the project, Singh ultimately returned to YouTube for its distribution. Our interview took place after the company announced it would be launching the pay-to-use content service YouTube Red, and revealed that A Trip to Unicorn Island would be among the first pieces of original content available to users. (There's no release date for the film, but YouTube did say original content will start rolling out on Red in January.)
