Zootropolis (or Zootopia as it’s known in the States) is a hugely entertaining animated flick that takes place in an animal metropolis where predator and prey live side-by-side. The film is directed by Rich Moore (Wreck-it-Ralph) and Byron Howard (Tangled) and we recently had a chat with the pair about sequels, in-jokes, and the fact that rather than being a cop comedy, the film was very nearly a spy flick about a rabbit called Jack Savage.
IGN: How did the idea for Zootropolis come to you?
Byron Howard: Five years ago – right after I finished directing Tangled with Nathan Greno, John
asked what I wanted to do next. And when you do these things, you go to a pitch meeting with John and what he wants you to do is not bring in just one idea, but bring three or four or five. Because he doesn’t want you to put all your eggs in one basket. One thing he noticed about all the different things that I was pitching back then was that many of them involved this idea of anthropomorphic animals. Animals that walked upright and wore clothes. He got very excited about the idea – he gave me a big hug and carried me around the room. He was very excited and very keen to do this movie, because ‘We’re making a talking animal movie! Finally!’ Because we hadn’t done one in a long time.
