James T. Kirk himself credits Star Wars for the popularity of Star Trek.
Speaking at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas (via io9), William Shatner dropped the bomb onto an audience of Trekkies.
“Star Wars created Star Trek. You know that?” he said.
Despite the fact Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope came out ten years after Star Trek debuted on televisions, Shatner said its huge popularity was the reason Gene Roddenberry's series was resurrected after NBC cancelled it in 1969.
“Every year, there was the threat to be canceled. The third year, we were canceled, and everybody accepted it,” Shatner said.
