I would do that, but the nearest place to buy one is 75 miles from here, so I figured cleaning it would at least tell me if that was the problem. It did not solve anything. It is making a reasonably good spark, however.

yeah prolly ok but maybe not. One time I did chase my tail cleaned fuel system checked points (yep and old one with points) etc and was still backfiring and carrying on. Changed the plug and fixed it.

do you have something else with the same plug you could swap out?

Try the choke it with the hand or something on the intake while cranking.
It can literally suck debris and crud thru the main jet which is what this sounds like being.

Is it flat head or OHV?
Some of the OHV ones are prone to bend a pushrod.

I do recommend using the Startron.
Gas can sit in them guaranteed for 6 months and be fine.
Seems to work for a year though.

I have a 42 inch MTD rider. Same as troy built.
It is around 12-15 yrs old and going great.

btw never buy lawnmower batteries at lowes. junk 1 season batteries for the most part.
The Exides at the windmill store are great though.
Forget the name of the place....too many drugs.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT:

Any of you folks small engine mechanics? My TroyBilt riding mower (13 months old) is popping and backfiring like crazy. Throttle isn't running the RPMs it should for any given setting. Plug was fouled, so I cleaned and gapped it. Oil is good. Fuel was drained before winter storage and fresh stuff just put in. Air filter is clean. Don't run fer shit!

If no one has any ideas what's wrong, do any of you know a good forum I can go to for such information?

Does the engine back fire at high speeds? Low speeds all speeds and will it keep running but back fires?
If it runs but backfires at all speeds the that points towards spark or valves.

Flank steak tacos, but instead of a tortilla.......slice some paper thin slices of Jicama! Gonna have to see if my dil wants to do this since she's tryin to go low carb

lol it's a root veg. It's crispy like a raw tater, but sweet a little like a pear or apple. Really good. Love to julienne it in slaws, or salads.

That sounds delicious! You could even put them in a taco shell mold and either oven bake them with a light coating of oil and seasoning of choice or good old fashioned deep fry them in the mold to make hard shell tacos with them.

I really miss flank steak! Havent used it since I ran this little tex-mex place in town. I used to marinade it in oil, garlic, lime juice, and a very little bit of worcestershire and soya. Was delicious for fajitas!

Well, technically, it is horizontal but I believe they still call it OHV. And maybe that's how the Craftsman died, but this TroyBilt was running perfectly the last time it was used (last Fall), but first start up this Spring resulted in all this backfiring and lost power curve. I suspected the plug and the fuel line/carb as the culprits, although theoretically, they should not have been an issue when stored dry.

Guess I'll just have to keep poking and prodding until something shows its ugly head...

I wish we had something besides cows that could trim all the acres and acres of grass around here. Cows would do it, but they tend to leave behind some huge piles of stuff ya just don't wanna step in...

The engine seems to run at the same RPM regardless of where I set the throttle lever, and backfires at all settings. I am praying for it to just be the plug because if it is the valves, my limited mechanical abilities probably cannot fix that and I cannot afford to trailer it to a repair shop and pay their outrageous fees -- but that would be less than having to buy a new one. Sigh...
