The relaunched Wonder Woman series is one of the most crucial pieces of the DC Rebirth lineup. Not just because it comes at a time when the character's mainstream exposure is growing significantly, but also because it marks Greg Rucka's return to DC after a less than amicable split several years ago. Rucka's voice is exactly what DC needs to help recapture what's been missing with the New 52 and salvage a character who's been through a real roller coaster of storytelling quality lately.
In its own way, Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 is every bit as meta as DC Universe Rebirth #1 before it. Rucka takes a very introspective approach to this script as he explores the fallout of "The Darkseid War" and Diana's realization that she can no longer distinguish between reality and fabrication when it comes to her past. Rucka's finely honed narration not only captures Diana's proud, compassionate vice, it acknowledges the missteps the character has taken and the need to streamline and re-focus the franchise. Rucka celebrates the fact that Diana has so many qualities that sometimes put her at odds with herself. She's both a warrior and an ambassador. She's a goddess of war who believes in love and compassion for all. And despite the extremely self-reflective nature of the script, Rucka already shows a knack for exploring Diana's abilities in new and clever ways.
