During today's keynote at DICE Summit 2018, Xbox head Phil Spencer discussed the cultural transformation that has been taking place at Microsoft over the past several years since he's taken leadership over the Xbox team, and the lessons he's learned along the way.
"I'd been in my role for a month when I had the opportunity to speak to our Xbox team at an all-hands meeting," Spencer said. "The team was in a world of pain. We hadn't done our best work with the announce of Xbox One, the product we built wasn't meeting the expectation of our customers, market share was taking a nosedive, and it was painful to read all the headlines."
Spencer went on to note that the team at Xbox "thought the leadership team had gone totally tone deaf about what our customers were demanding from us." As such, Spencer said he had to not just win back consumers, but also win back the trust of his team. So he shared confidential news with his team the company couldn't take public for a few months, which helped to establish trust among the team.
