Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
“Day One” takes a step back in time and gives us a glimpse at each lead character’s first encounter with the zombie outbreak. This definitely feels like the type of episode that is just the calm before the storm. I am guessing it’s meant to almost act like a palette cleanser after the big Zeros two-part story and before next Friday’s finale, which most people will be watching on Saturday due to Star Wars.
While it was fun to jump back to the “origin” story for each of these characters most of these flashbacks don’t offer much substance of any sort. There are some cute moments however that do deliver at least some entertainment. Doc’s first encounter with a zombie being the standout with him working through an internal thought process of what exactly he’s witnessing before coming to the realization that it’s a zombie attack. It’s actually kind of funny how quickly this particular group understand what they were up against and reacted as if they had been trained on decades of zombie entertainment. George Romero trained us well.
