The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild offers nearly limitless freedom, incredible set pieces, and a reinvention of almost every classic Zelda mechanic. But even with so many options, it lacks one critical opportunity: the chance to pet the good dogs you meet at various stables and towns, an oversight that many players (including IGN staff members) have noticed since launch.
With many good boys unable to be pet, we spoke to series producer Eiji Aonuma and game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi about why such an adorable feature was omitted.
“In the game it seems like you can do anything, but what it really is are all these interlocking systems where you actually have a pretty limited number of actions that can do a ton of different things,” Fujibayashi told IGN. “So if it came down to something like petting a dog, we would actually have to put in a custom action just for petting a dog that couldn't really be used for anything else.”
