I have been thoroughly enjoying my black and silver Merlin V1s so much that I went ahead and ordered another one of each on efun. I'm hoping their models are the V2s. I haven't had any issues at all with the V1s, but I'd like to see if there are any differences. I also finally got around to trying a notch coil in a Merlin and they're excellent for TC. Nice flavor and super easy wicking with a notch coil.

I had a simple 430 SS (too high at 1.1) that I just couldn't get to perform in TC.
PWR mode wasn't great either.

So I popped in a Notch.
I haven't had to rewick the fat bastard (5mm?) yet... but it's producing just fine in both modes.

No leaks either, but then... that's a ton of tail available to play around with. :p

Notch coil seems quite passable. Not shopping for more, but glad to have them.

I've liked the Notch coil from day one. Bought like 150 for Vapocalypse. I've been getting 6-8 weeks out of them.

Speaking of.... Do you think well be able to get ahold of flavoring PG and VG after the 8th? Wire im sure well be able to get. I have a liter of NIC so im set there, Flavoring is what i, concerned about.

Yeah, it might be easier/cheaper to get glycerin and flavors from nonvape sources though

so im getting one of these merlins on a trade this week

something im still confused about is wicking it as a dual coil

do you wick the bottom coil as normal
then the top coil you let the ends lay on top of the bottom coil wicks and let the juice flow from bottom wick to top
or do you try and get both wicks into the wells

Thinking about it...

If the coils weren't pushing the size limits, I'd consider keeping the upper tight to the posts and have the lower as far out as possible.
Have the airflow come up between.

Or would that cause heat issues with the relatively uncooled outer sides of each?

I never have built one with a dual
I've only run mine with a single coil.

I think most people prefer a single coil with this atty for the sake of simplicity if nothing else. I've really been enjoying a large diameter Clapton.

I built a 1.5ohm 4mm Clapton and put it on my Noisy Cricket. That makes about 45 watts, a really nice vape with the Merlin and really good battery life with the Cricket.

What were the specs for that coil?

To be honest I'm not sure:giggle: I think it's 2x28ga wrapped with 36ga all N80.

I had built several sets of dual coils for another RTA I was using on the Cricket, trying to find a good build for it. They were all mixed up and I can't see good enough to distinguish witch ones were what so I just picked one and opened up the diameter and slapped it on the Merlin. It looks like 8 or 9 wraps and it is N80.

I ran duals last week and it worked pretty well. Posted here. Temp mode gets messed up though because the top coil heats faster. I fluffed and slightly thinned the tails of the wicks and stuffed both in the wells.

I just put a sleeper dual vertical in last night and it's running REALLY well. Best flavour yet on this tank. Tightens up the draw a bit though because it's so full of coil ( 2 x 5/32 coils). Didn't do photos as this was the trial run. Will do so next rebuilt, or more likely on my 2nd tank.

Roxy has pics of a dual coil build with a description on wicking on either page 1 or 2 of this thread.

Nice! I might have to try something like that on one of mine. Though it probably won't look as nice.

Definitely try it! Such good flavor.

My only tip is to wrap from the leads on both sides until they meet in the middle, then unwrap your leads. Hard to wrap cleanly from the bridge down to the 2nd lead with the first coil in the way. Make sure the bridge isn't higher than the posts and pack the wick across the top down a bit once juiced, or it will block off airflow.

Does it not need more airflow? I had a single 28g twisted clapton at 0.9 ohms and everytime a lot of vapor used to come out of the airflow after I take a puff.

What metal? I was using SS316L. It ramps up and cools down pretty quickly. That being said it is a more restricted lung hit now (a/f pin out, a/f full open) with all that coil and wick in there.

I was using kanthal. It needed 40w and gave a nice warm vape but produced a lot of heat and took long to cool down which is why there was always vapor coming out off the airflow even after I take a puff. This was a lot of vapor because it used to condense on my mod and needed wiping every time.

ok so got a merlin today
have to say i have mixed emotiions

on one hand this is the best built tank ive seen

every thing is smooth and tight

i love the draw on this without the restrictor

but the flavor is sub par compared ot my griffin 22

now im only running a single coil 316l vertabraid 30ga 6 wraps at .33 ohms running about 40w

versus dual 316l fused claptons at about .5 ohm at 50w in my griffins

but the flavor is better in the griffins using the exact same flavors
im also feeling but am not sure that the merlin is not wicking as well with my 90vg juice

its not burning but its sort of cottony and sort of dry every few hits

overall its not a bad tank. im gonna have to try some different builds out to test it out more

if i could figure out that dual vertical build and how the hell you build it i would like to try it, because it looks like the perfect build for this tank

ok tried that dual vertical coil
28 ga cores 32ga wrap 316l came out at like 1.6 ohms at a 4mm id
but that just was shorting out on me
tried it at 3mm and the ohms still read at like 1.4

with 95vg it just is not keeping up at all
might not be doing something right

this thing is gonna sit on the desk for a while
may try a dual coil build later

its such a shame
cuz the posts are a unique idea
and this thing is so well built
and the draw is great

I run simple coils in my Merlin. I have never tried a 2 coil build in it only single. I do set my coil as high as I can. I also thin out the ends of my cotton. I've found with this tank less is more. I've been getting great flavor. My only complaint is now after a few months I'm starting to get the dreaded seeping issue. It's very little but still annoying.

What was it shorting on? Coils should both be over the airflow hole evenly as possible, but with a 1-1.5mm gap between them. Also make sure the coils are no higher than the posts. I run 80-85% vg juices.

I do the same as @Deucesjack I used 26/32 single Clapton 6 wraps I think, coils as high as possible in line with the top of the posts. Flavors great. I think you just have to experiment you'll get it.

@RedheadedBStarD ok need your expert help here
decided to try this dual vertcial coil again

so let me explain

im using prebuilt clapton wire orm advanced vape supply
its 316l
2x28/32

i have no issues with this wire doing dual coils in my griffins

so if i go on steam and input the gauges set it to clapton etc etc
set it to 3.5mm ID with 8 wraps it says the ohms should be .6 something

but when i build this coil with 4 wraps on each side
install both legs on the bottom hole of each post my mods say this has a ohm of 1.5 ish
even taking the wire between the two halves and everything, thats not enough wire to acct for the difference form steam.

you said yours as a SS build was what .3 ish ohms

im sure theres nothing touching the deck or anything else.

what in the world could be causing it to read it at double the ohms it should be

ok another thing for everyone

i was trying some single wire coils in this. just to build something fast and see if ohms matche dup with steam

damn grub screws keep breaking my leads
i tried different grub screws and same issue....
IS THAT NORMAL?
im still slightly new to rtas and coil building, but never had that happen before
5 times actually

also anyone seen this situation
i got thismerlin as a trade form someone who's acct magically disappeared today
anyhow
he sent me a second base
and one post did not have the bottom hole drilled all teh way through
it was only drilled out in the back not the front, so you cant even use the bottom hole on that post

ok now im getting worried

so i put a simple clapton single coil in it

ohms are reading double what they should be

so i think to myself lets check authenticity code

so i had to remove the entire packaging from the plastic case to get to it.
I had to scratch off the silver stuff to reveal the code
punched it in the website and it says the number had been checked one time before be careful of imitation

Is there a second sticker included with the authentication code that the person i got this from could have used to punch in the same code. or is there only one instance of it?

with all the other bs going on with ts member in other threads im starting to feel i got screwed. i hope i didnt and im just doing something wierd thast causing my ohms to be wrong

also the serial # on the base with the bad post is 24
while the serial number on the base that you can use is 1125

actually i thught hucks base was missing a screw hole not half a post hole

anyway did your merlin come with more then 1 instance of teh security code n it
or just one that you have t o completely disassmble the packaging to get to?

You are right about the post hole missing.

Never looked at my security codes though

silver

i may have figured out my ohms problem
i think its the SS wire is so springy and i suck at wrapping tight coils
i wrap it on a 4mm mandrel and its springing out to 4.5 or more
i wrapp on a 3.5 mandrel and i can fit a 4mm mandrel in it

that i must be remeberring the gauges wrong even though i checke dmy acct on advanced vape supply.

i put the same coil in both merlin bases and my crius base and all read the same on 2 different mods.

just wierd both the chart on advanced vape supply and steam say these coils should be like half of what i get them to be

Checked my authentication. It says:

"Security Code: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx had been checked for 1 times, pls be careful of imitation."

I'm reading that broken english as "Security Code: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx has been checked 1 times."

Also, for your resistance issue.. Check to make sure you are choosing the proper dual / single coil configuration on steam engine. I really don't know the answer, but I'd imagine a "dual coil" that is one long piece of wire is actually a single coil when it comes to physics (and therefore ~ twice the resistance).
