I'm a moron. Let's get that out of the way first. Reminders that I'm a moron will not be necessary here. I exposed my mod to too much moisture... some must have gotten in the charge port and battery vent down bottom... Stupid ice/rainstorm...

My SMOK R80 TC. It is vaping, and it is charging, apparently. But some weird things are going on.

-It thinks it's charging, but it's not. After the screen times out, i tap the fire button, and it will show the charge indicator [e.g. "Charging 73%"]. But it's not plugged in. SOMETIMES I will plug it in and then it doesn't think it's charging... Even when the screen is showing the regular stats, the little battery indicator will indicate as if it's charging, but again, it's not.

-I cannot turn it off. For those of you familiar with the firmware, I go to the last main menu item, which is power on/off, and no matter how many times I press + or -, it will always say "power on" and be unable to switch to off. All other functions with the +/- buttons seem to be working fine [changing wattage/temp, changing coil material, changing TCR, changing fixed resistance, etc. etc. etc.].

I have reset the device many times, which is accomplished with a paper clip by pressing the recessed "reset" button in between the + and - buttons. Same problem recurs.

I mean, it's not totally broken, but it's frustrating. Should I try the old "bag of rice" thing?

Thanks

EDIT: Note that the R80TC has an integrated battery, so I sadly can't just remove them like 18650s.

I would remove the batteries and try a can of compressed air, like they use to clean keyboards. Blow it in any of the access spaces that let you get to the interior.

Oooh, should been clear about that.

Integrated battery. Little hex bolts to get in...

I would see if the battery has something with a harness or plugs that you can remove. If you can to spray it with air. if you can't try dunking it in rice. My only concern with rice is I'm not sure how well it can absorb PG or VG.

Thank you all. It's a water problem, not a PG/VG problem.

Fortunately I have two other mods, and a fourth that is being lent to a friend, so leaving it alone in some rice for two days or so will not be an issue. Thanks all!

Compressed air and/or the rice thing may work.. If it's only ambient humidity that got in it and made it act funny...

However if it were me, I'd get whatever tool I need to get the battery disconnected and dry & inspect the unit. Once it's dry, re-connect the battery and charge it (supervised) and see if all of the normal functionality has returned. Electronics can in fact get wet and work again once dried correctly. However, most problems occur when electronics get wet while there is voltage applied to various parts of the board; e.g. - Batteries still being connected.

Water alone in many cases doesn't hurt electrical components, but water + electrical current causes electrolysis and corrosion to occur and usually ends up eating circuit traces on a board, legs on a chip, leads off components, etc... Strange things can happen then when corrosion builds up and bridges legs of a chip or traces on a board, etc.

I'm not implying that leaving it sit and dry for a few days won't work; it very well may, depending on how wet it got. I'm just saying play it safe and be thorough. You are talking about a device that contains a 4000 mah battery which you routinely put next to your face and fire. You don't want to get hurt.

FWIW I've been repairing electronics and electrical equipment for over 20 years and I am currently resurrecting a $21 million production facility that took 4' of water from flooding in August. I'm just passing along what I've seen in the past with water damage. I am by no means the final authority on this stuff.

Sounds exactly like what my Smok M80 did right before the battery vented. Be careful charging it that's when mine went. Got hot fast.

Greatly appreciate the thorough response. I will admit, despite its quirkiness, I am still vaping it between "ricings," for lack of a better term.... mmmmaybe I should stop. Thanks for your expertise, don't sell yourself short :)....

see what I did there... :p

Since you powered it up already I would try drying as said but I would be looking to buy a new mod as chances are once electric hits moisture mod is toast. Sorry to be a downer

Hmph... yeah it's a sad lesson... It's not my favorite mod but hey, SMOK makes good reliable products, and I probably found a way to break it.

Here we are at day 3. It's still working, but still doing the same finicky stuff. It works, guess I'll have to live with it until it dies.

So how's your mod doing now?

Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

Thanks for asking. Well, It's functional...

Basically, it just thinks its charging whether it's actually charging or not. All other features now work. Occasionally, when trying to fire, i get the date and time on the screen instead of a vape... but that's easily remedied by unscrewing the tank and rescrewing it in...

Eh, not totally bricked... i'll live.
