Full disclosure:

Let’s get all the disclosures out of the way. This mod was sent to me directly from Ijoy specifically for the purposes of this review. This will not in any way, shape, or form cause me to give this mod a favorable review or change my opinion in any way.

First Impression Out Of The Box:

Nice looking mod. I’m digging the carbon fiber look. Looks like a cross between a Cuboid and a G Class. The Carbon fiber feels good and the mod is very light without batteries. Firing button is just huge.

What's In The Box:

In the first tier of the box you have the mod itself. Take out the mod and in the bottom compartment of the box is 2 Ijoy 20700 batteries, a user manual, a warranty card, charging cable, and a dual 18650 battery adapter. The adapter is a dual rubber sleeve with gold plated battery contacts on the closed end. I have used it and it works very well. I just want to take the time in this section to really give a lot of credit to Ijoy for including the 20700 batteries in this kit. I think it's a fantastic move on their part especially since quality 20700’s are very hard to come by lately. They showed a lot of vision and foresight by creating a 20700 mod and developing a battery for it as well. Great job Ijoy! The batteries are 3.7V, 3000 mAh, 40 amp 20700’s. They are 2mm wider than an 18650 and 5mm longer. They are supposed to give you 30% more battery life than a dual 18650 setup.

From Top To Bottom:

The 510 has stainless steel threading and the pin itself looks to be gold plated. It is spring loaded but it does not have a lot of travel. It will fit 30mm atomizers on it without any overhang. For some reason both Captains that were sent to me will not recognize my Aromamizer Plus. It is the only atomizer this happens with. When I screw it on it says no atomizer. To be fair, I do have a pre release version. I did convey this to Ijoy and they assured me they are looking into it. Hopefully this will be corrected before the retail version is released. Other than that little quirk the 510 has worked with every other atomizer I own and they all sit flush on it and fire beautifully.

The body of the mod is wrapped in carbon fiber. It feels like a sticker but it is not cheap feeling at all. To me it feels the same as a high quality wrap would. It even has some nice texture to to it. On the back of the mod there is some branding that says Captain PD270. It is discreet and not gaudy at all. The placement of the logo is almost reminiscent of the G Class logo but it does not light up.
474c9b7cdb6ce1f20be57bb5108826ec.jpg

The firing button is just a monster. It’s a big square with rounded corners that almost wraps around the edges of the mod. It is clicky as well as responsive. Because of its size it is very easy to find. It feels comfortable trigger firing it or thumb firing it. It has a short throw to it and so far I have had no issues or misfires with it. It feels and sounds like it is made out of metal.
4cda86479a638e7bf8c31fdafc72a986.jpg

That hinged battery door is well done. Push down and out and it opens, push down and in and it closes. It is very stable and once put in place it does not move. On the inside of the battery door there are gold plated contacts. The batteries are labeled A and B and there are battery orientation markers as well. There is no venting holes on the battery door.

The screen is .96” and very bright with big fonts. It can be hard to see in direct sunlight but it does work well in most lighting conditions. Plenty of information is displayed on the screen so the user knows exactly what their mod is doing. On the screen you will be able to see watts, battery life, mode, material, resistance, amps, temperature, number of puffs and puff duration.
53b032ee12a7812f54b2ed4b65ef51e7.jpg

Below the screen are the +/- buttons. They are rectangular in shape with the ends having a curvature and they have a really good feel to them. They are clicky and responsive. The plus button is on the right and the minus is on the left. Below the plus button is the update/charging port. Above the screen there is some really discreet Ijoy branding that you really have to look closely to see.

The Look, Feel, and General Aesthetics Of The Mod:

I really like the looks and feel of this mod. It reminds me of a more squarish, lighter, SX Mini G Class. It just has that type of look. It does feel great in the hand and I do get a lot of compliments on it when I take it out. The size is initially deceptive because the user is lead to believe that this is a heavy mod but in all fairness it is not. For its size it is surprisingly light. It’s also one of only a handful of regulated mods that will fit a 30mm tanks with no overhang. The carbon fiber is well done and from what Ijoy has told me they are going to have a plethora of colors in the lineup. The Captain measures in at 89mm x 48mm x 32mm. Not exactly a pocketable mod but due to its shape its no where near as awkward in your pocket a a triple or quadruple 18650 mod would be. All of the buttons are very solid and if you like to shake your mod you will get no rattle at all.
efb90ac362ca90569aac8361efbe5fda.jpg
3c5b77e859c92edae035a978c04bc051.jpg

The Board:

This is your typical Ijoy board and it is very similar to the Solo Pro V2 with a few little differences as far as the screen layout goes. It has a full temperature control suite as well as TCR functions. It will vape in Ni, Ti, and SS in TC. Like a lot of mods in TC mode you must lock the resistance. It also has a custom user mode that you allows you to adjust your own power curve. It will fire as low as .05 ohms and as high as 3 ohms. It can also charge the batteries in the mod and the firmware is upgradeable. Of course I always recommend external charging but it's a really nice feature to have available in a pinch. It does take some time to charge those massive 20700’s in the mod or externally. In power mode there are preheat options such as soft, normal, and hard. These are not available in TC. The Ijoy Captain does go up to 234 watts and the chip is designed by Iwepal.

The Menu System:

This is a very simple menu system that is also very intuitive.

* 5 clicks on/off
* 3 clicks to get to the main menu
* Once in the main menu use the +/- button to toggle through your choices
* Pick a menu selection by hitting the fire button
* Hold the +/- to lock the resistance

But Deuces, How Does She Vape:

The Captain is great mod that provides a fantastic vape. It seems to be accurate in power and temp mode. I have been vaping this thing non stop for the past few days and I have to say I like it, I like it alot. As of this writing I have well over 1200 puffs on the counter. Considering I have 10-15 mods in my daily rotation at any given time, thats a hell of a lot of puffs. It also means that I am reaching for it a lot more than the other mods I have. I have taken it everywhere with me and it has performed flawlessly. I have run my small single coil RTA’s on it, dual coil RTA’s, dual and single coil RDTA’s, dual and single coil RDA’s and my huge cloud chucking Sub Ohm tanks. No matter what I throw at it the Captain it performs very well. Except of course for the Aromamizer Plus. Which is a real shame considering what a popular 30mm tank it is.

I really do enjoy running my big cloud chuckers on this mod. It just seems like it's built for that. My favorite tank on it is my Cigpet Eco 12. I can run that tank on it for hours at 150 watts before I need to replace the batteries. I would say this has equivalent battery life of my Lost Vape Triade. Maybe even a little better. Power mode is great but TC is smooth as well. So far I have only used Ni, and SS mode and I have to say I am very satisfied with both.

If you do not run cloud chucking tanks this is easily an all day or two day mod. Realistically you could probably run a 30 watt build on this mod for days. This is a huge pro and a great reason to own a mod like this. I know if I ran my Serpent Mini or White Bone Mini on it at 32 watts that I could get 2 maybe 3 days out of a fully charged set of 20700’s.

Conclusion:

I have to say that the Captain is very impressive. I absolutely love the battery life I get and I think that in itself is a huge pro and a major reason to just go out and buy this mod. It really does check off all of the boxes for me. Looks, performance, 30mm with no overhang, good TC, battery life, great screen, and a huge firing button. I mean what more could you possibly ask for? I also have to give Ijoy tons of credit for being the first big mod company to mass produce a 20700 mod. I love the fact that they knew the 20700 battery was hard come by so they decided to do their own and include them in the kit. Ijoy gets big ups from me for taking the lead on this. As a vaper it's great to see new batteries being developed and companies taking advantage of those improvements. Hopefully we will see a lot of the popular mods reintroduced in 20700 form. The Captain is resoundingly DeucesJack approved. Just go get one, you won’t be sorry.

Not like I wasn't going to buy it before your review but now I am more anxious to get it....Lol

Looks like all tanks will have a slight gap under them because of the raised part around the 510? My LUX has that and it doesn't bother me like I thought it would but I know the OCD around here is strong.

Great review as always mang

Thanks bro, the only atomizer that has a slight more noticeable gap is the BMI Nova but to be honest it does that on most mods. All the others sit pretty flush. Yeah, get it bro. It's basically triple 18650 battery life in a better, smaller, lighter form factor.

Except for the Aromamizer issue everything else fires fine on it. Hopefully they will correct that in the retail version. I have to give Ijoy credit, they do listen to their consumers. I would love to see a 20700 Zenith. Now that would be badass.

I remember I have one mod that the aromamizer plus won't fire on. I just remembered when you brought it up again. I remember the AP being the first tank that would not fire on this mod but I still can't remember which one it was. Mo mods, mo problems....that's what puff daddy said

Yeah, hopefully they'll get it corrected on the retail version because that tank was made for this mod. I'm working on the Plus review right now. Hopefully I'll drop it tomorrow. Doing the cons on the Plus right now. Tbh, I'm having a hard time finding any. Lol.

Gonna put the Captain through his paces this weekend. Taking it with me to the Vape Expo at Foxwoods Casino. Gonna pair it with my black Skywalker and do some serious juice tasting. Should be loads of fun.

Just want to give a little update on the Captain. Saturday I was at the National Vape Expo at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. If any of you have ever attended a vape show you know that all of the juice vendors have all of their juices set up on a mod and they hand out disposable drip tips. If you choose to do so they also allow you to drip directly into an RDA if you have one on you. I choose to use my own RDA because I think the flavor is just better that way and I can get a better feel for the juice I am trying. I decided to bring my Captain fully charged and a spare set of batteries. I put my UD Skywalker on top of the Captain with dual Aliens ohming out at .18 at 85 watts. I put the same exact build in another Skywalker on the Sigelei Fuchai 213. My GF had the Sig and I had the Captain. We basically vaped pretty close to the same amount all day. We were there for 8 hours. A little more than halfway through the day my GF had to put in fresh batteries. The Captain was still going strong. My Captain died about 30 minutes before we left. It just stomped on the Sig in the battery life department. I know, I know this is very un scientific but I still think it was very telling. So far I'm just very impressed with the Ijoy 20700 batteries and their performance.

Great review Jack. Just a few niggling questions. Will these 20700 batteries fit into a regular external charging unit? Also, in your opinion, which mod would be better: evic primo 228 or the Captain?

Great questions. I don't have the Primo so I really can't do an intelligent comparison. My 20700's do fit in my Efest 6 bay charger however I have seen complaints of them not fitting in some chargers.

The Captain is currently one of my favorite mods. Especially after using it at Foxwoods and getting the run time I got out of it. I love it.

I don't have the captain yet personally, but i have a primo and i can say don't buy one. waste of money. I did a review of it if you wanted tos ee more but short version is the 510 pin is trash and it fires really inconsistent and just feels cheap and poorly made

OP thank you for the review. This mod is right now on my must buy list when in stock arrives. I can't do a pre order because I'm seeing sites with different dates. Im ready to slap a next day air order on this when I can.

The above asked about taste control. I imagine since taste control was a sales pitch thing 2 years ago to prevent dry hits. Something like that is probably built into the chip now since it's 2017. Like a car with power windows, like almost all new cars have it without asking. But that's just my opinion.

How does this mod fire in terms of speed. I heard the newest model Smok mods G150 I think supposedly fires alot faster than all other previous Smok mods so in 2017 I expect all new mods to fire faster now. At least a reduction in time like a pre heat ramp up built in rather than the pre heat sales gimick. Alot of sales pitches in the past I think should be a standard now and I hope they are building this stuff in the chips.

Looking at the mod and vaping on it would you recommend it as an ADV mod for someone looking for an upgrade. I held off on the Smok G-Priv, x cube ultra or Alien because I saw this mod was coming out.

Hope I didn't ramble to much and my questions made sense

Thank you for the kind words. Yeah it's an all day mod. I had it going at Foxwoods all day and I used one set of batteries. As far as how fast it fires, it's very responsive. It also has preheat functions in wattage mode so you can get this thing to ramp up exotic coils quickly. Just a solid all day mod IMO. TC is legit as well. I've had it for a couple of weeks now and I take it everywhere with me. Love my Captain.

Great, first real world review I've heard that convinced me that patiently waiting for this mod was going to be worth it. The last 2 weeks I don't know how many times I saw a G Priv or Alien in rainbow that I wanted to buy, saw both today. I told myself no it's worth getting the Captain when it's available. Reading alot of the bigger review sites are sometimes lacking on reviews. Either sponsorship and lack of pictures. Good to see the Captain paired with the Kylin RTA as that's one of my next tanks too. I'm the guy that needs juice more than anything. My current Aspire Zelos with Smok Baby tank will be my emergency back up setup. A nice mod and a couple tanks is all need for happiness.

Keep up the reviews we all appreciate it, probably more people reading your reviews than actual forum members.

Thanks, I truly appreciate that. I have the Zelos and Cleito Exo on the way from Aspire. Looking forward to them.

You'll love the Zelos as a night out tank, shopping or something like that. The battery power is really efficient for a 2500 mah built in. I use the Zelos with a Smok X4 coil on my baby tank at 42 watts for work. I work 12 hour shifts and run about 6-8 ml threw it and the battery lasts without a recharge. The only downside I can say with the mod is the battery meters like lowest setting before it says recharge or it's just done is the half way mark. The meter won't go down to nothing like a cell battery meter. Haven't tried TC or anything. Wattage seems really accurate as well as ohm readings up to .01 accuracy. It's just not a powerful mod

***UPDATE***

Just a quick update. I have gotten quite a few PM's asking me if the Rainbow version is actually being produced because a lot of sites have it listed as discontinued. I just spoke with Ijoy and they assure me the Rainbow Captain is indeed getting made and it is in production.

I didn't pm you but the Rainbow/Carbon Fiber is in my opinion the best looking mod to date and I'm still patiently waiting on it. I was going to pre order from VapeNW and the Vandy Vape Kylin both of which VapeNW has no idea when will be in stock. I wished they didn't advertise this mod so soon though. Seems like production was delayed or something they needed to work out before a public release. Even if they had a limited amount going to all the companies I would think they would have already rolled out. If you do talk to ijoy again try to get an actual release date or timeframe. It went from early May originally to mid May, late May, early June and so on

I hear ya, but to be fair I don't think it has been officially released yet. I did get an early pre release version. I'll see if I can get a release date.
