Could Too Much Power Be Part Of The Problem?

A few weeks back I posted that I was having some lung irritation from vaping. I eliminated PG/VG, omitted certain eliquid ingredients, changed wicking material and so on. The usual process of elimination.

Over time, my "symptoms" would wax and wane, but subsided significantly when I went back to a lower voltage setting and a trusty Protank at 3.2 - 3.7V. Prior to this setup, I was mostly using a VaporShark and an Egrip with a Kayfun and the stock coils and RBA from Joyetech for the Egrip. On both of these higher wattage (at least higher than the Provari), I was consistently around 8 watts. Throughout the process, I only vaped 6mg and 3mg, so not a lot of nic.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I notice when I vape from the Egrip or VaporShark over the course of a full day, the irritation returns. To reduce it, I return to the Provari/Protank setup mentioned earlier and within 24-36 hours, I feel fine again.

So...is it possible that my lung irritation is directly related to my needs to vape at a lower voltage/wattage setting? In addition, could it also be less vapor that is a better fit for me?

Thoughts are appreciated!

The only time I don't cough when I vape is using my old Halo Triton tanks.....

Not going to happen LOL But it does seem to be heat related.

Maybe?
I don't vape blazing hot, but I don't cool vape either.

So I can't give you any feedback about the low wattage you use, since I don't vape that cool to begin with.

It seems that way to me, but I just want to make sure I am not missing anything. I definitely like the flavor/experience better at a higher wattage.
Same here....but I am finding that the combination of a SubTank Mini @ .5ohms/25watts is delivering! I am using the rebuildable RBA head with 80% VG liquid.

That sounds like a great setup and am glad it is working for you. I would love to try that route, but it seems like it would be inviting trouble given my current dilemma.

Well do not increase your dilemma!

Try to build your coils closer to the air holes to cool it down but still get great vape production and flavor. I like a cool vape, not into throat hit. Got a buddy that vapes 16mg juice out of an orchid and builds the coils hot and away from the holes. I just about fall over when I hit his mod but he loves it.

Maybe even try something counterintuitive and get a fog machine like a CLT or something with the big old DT and build the coils near the air slits & build it at 0.55 ohms running 40w. Super cool vape with clouds and flavor to spare.

Just my two cents.

Edit:
Oh yeah, and like franciscan said, high vg. I mix up 60% vg juice, again, I don't like a lot of throat hit and higher vg juice seems to be less of an irritant on my throat & lungs.

Is there a way to accomplish something similar with a Kayfun or the RBA (Kayfun build) on an Egrip? I don't think there is, but most of the people on this forum are smarter than I am!

What are you wicking with?

Not familiar with the egrip and the kayfun coil is just where it is, not much room for different positioning. Maybe try a 1.5 build on the kayfun if you haven't yet?

I get a cooler and much denser vape from my clt built like described above than I do from my wife's provari/kayfun at 1.2 ohms.

If you have a regulated device that can do at least 40w, it may be worth the $10 to pick up a mutation x (or whatever it is) or a doge or any of the big air flow huge drip tip toppers at fasttech.

I really do like a cool no throat hit vape and I run a clt v2 when I'm at home (or somewhere convenient to drip). Very satisfying and most people that do clearo's or single coil rta's are surprised expecting to hack up a lung when they try it. Then they usually ask me where they can get one :D

Thanks for your help! I can go to 30Watts with what I have in mods. I should have some wiggle room with that power.

I will keep exploring your suggestions. Thanks, again!

For my regular air flow orchid (still high compared to the majority of toppers out there) I run 27~29 watts. But that is a warmer vape than the CLT at 43w.

I kinda don't think you can get what I am suggesting with 30 watts though. Maybe like 0.45 ~0.50 at 30w but 30w in a big air flow topper like the CLT may be too cool... but maybe that's not a terrible thing? You may just need to get the resistance just right to max out the 30w but it may work.

As I'm typing I just tried it, coil @ 0.53 running 30w. Super cool as expected but still more vapor than my wife's kayfun. Dropping resistance to 0.5 would help as long as you don't hit an amp limit in your mod.

Its been a little over a week for me since I switched from direct lung hits back to the standard mouth to lung inhales, and I have to admit, I do feel a noticeable difference when I take a deep breath in the morning right when I wake up.

And the kicker is that I'm back to vaping flavored juices again, so its really hard to pinpoint specific causes/effects; just gotta go with what works for you and enjoy ;)

So in response to @kh888 , if vaping higher wattage has such an immediate effect on you, then as @franciscan said, pretty self explanatory since you know your own body better than anyone else can. If it were me, I would probably resign to the fact that I have to stick with a setup that I can enjoy and doesn't cause lung irritation or any other negative side effects.

Thank you for weighing in. My gut says you are probably right, but before I fully abandon the higher wattages, I think I will develop a tracker and plot out nic levels, voltage/wattages, and try each setup for a couple of day and check results.

As I mentioned before, I prefer the cape at a higher setting, but it might not be feasible for me.

Not too much power, but too high a temperature - related, but not quite the same. I think you're overheating your juice just a tad and breathing in acrolein, but you don't sense it. I was having the same sort of symptoms until I switched to a DNA40 mod with temperature control.

If you're interested, I've described my "hidden acrolein theory" here

Very interesting concept! So...a couple of questions for you:

1. Which DNA40 Device are you using and do they all (DNA40) have temperature control?
2. With DNA30 devices or DNA20 devices without temperature control, is there a way to regulate the temp by adjusting coil diameter and wattage?

Thank you - I appreciate your input!

To my knowledge, the DNA40 board is the only board that does temp control (unless I've missed Chinese boards that are out on the market already). The 30 and 20 don't have the feature.

If you don't have a electronic temp control, the only feedback on temperature is "manual" - i.e. by tasting the vapor and/or getting dry-hits, in extreme cases - and believe me, it's nowhere near as accurate.
