Do you have a love-hate relationship with fish, Jimi?

You wouldn’t be alone!

If you’re a health-conscious person, you might feel a little conflicted when it comes to fish and seafood.

Fish have a long list of health benefits, but they also have the potential to contain detrimental levels of mercury — a toxic heavy metal.

So… is fish healthy or harmful?

Fortunately, we finally have an answer for you!

Research shows that the benefits of consuming fish outweigh the risks.

Seafood is packed with nutrition. Shellfish, especially, is loaded with vitamins and minerals that many of us are lacking… like iodine, zinc, and B12. Seafood also provides us with protein and many coldwater fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA.

The bad news is… due to environmental contamination, the presence of mercury in seafood is concerning, and you are right to be worried about your mercury intake.

Pregnant women, for example, have been warned for many years to limit their seafood consumption due to concerns about the baby’s neurological development.

However, more and more research suggests that as long as they are reducing their levels of seafood high in mercury, expecting mothers are actually encouraged to consume fish while pregnant.

Seafood offers two protective factors when it comes to mercury: polyunsaturated fat content - specifically omega-3s and selenium. Those two factors tip the scale in favor of fish consumption rather than its avoidance.

If you’ve been concerned about mercury levels in your seafood, you had every reason to be!

However, the research now suggests that fish is a nutritionally powerful food and the benefits offset its potential risks.

Remember, it’s always a good idea to make sure the fish and seafood you’re consuming are varieties that contain less mercury.

Foraging your backyard: Meet Sumac and make lemonade​

Ever since I became an herbalist, a stroll in the park has never been the same. I walk by a plant and either revere its medicinal superpowers or wonder what I don’t know about it.

Come on an herbal walk with me to make lemonade with… SUMAC. This weedy plant (shrub that may look like a tree) bears crimson red, cob-like, hairy seeds that are true medicine.

Full of vitamin C, it lowers LDL cholesterol, reduces fatty liver, and shows high antioxidant properties. The research on Pubmed is impressive.

I’ve just made lemonade with it. It’s so good. I don't have an actual recipe because it's that simple: break apart the sumac cob, pour over hot water, and let it infuse for 1 to 12 hours. The longer the better. Strain, add a sweetener such as maple syrup to your taste, ice it, and voila. It's tart, astringent, and very refreshing. You can also dry the seeds and use them in za'atar, the spice mix I've mentioned in the video.

Eugenyl methyl ether, commonly known as methyl eugenol, is used to enhance the flavor of ice creams, jellies, baked products, non-alcoholic beverages, and relishes. The issue is that methyl eugenol is classified as a carcinogen under California's Proposition 65. This comes after animals exposed to the chemical were shown to have an elevated risk of cancer.
Another food supplement study published in the Scientific Research Journal found that methyl eugenol is both genotoxic and carcinogenic.
When purchasing goods for your family, study the labels and avoid those that include eugenyl methyl, sometimes known as "fake tastes."
At all costs, avoid synthetic flavoring, processed meals, beverages, and sauces to live a healthier and longer life. Instead, make your own food from scratch and buy only whole foods and organic items.

Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) is a condition rarely discussed by doctors. Yet, MCAS is often a cause or trigger for numerous unwanted health conditions.

It’s astounding how many movies there are about mushrooms: everything from the 1995 Australian flick “Mushrooms,” about two eccentric old dames with a passion for poison, to the 2007 Irish horror film “Shrooms,” and the 2014 BBC documentary “The Magic of Mushrooms,” which is the story of fungi’s mysterious life cycle.

It’s also astounding how many types of mushrooms there are. In North America alone, more than 10,000 species have been described.

Out of that 10,000, around 1% will kill you, 20% will make you sick, 4% will be edible and tasty, and the rest aren’t worth the bother, according to Mushroom, the Journal.

The edible ones do deliver great nutritional benefits, however. One serving of UV-raised portabellas delivers 64% of your daily value of vitamin D.

And most mushrooms, such as white button and shiitake, naturally deliver a good dose of selenium and the B vitamins — pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and niacin. And that’s not all. A study of seniors found that having two three-quarter cup servings of cooked mushrooms a week cuts your risk for mild cognitive impairment in half.

But even one small portion weekly may provide brain benefits.

The main brain-protective ingredient in mushrooms is called ergothioneine — an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant compound your body can’t make on its own.

Mushrooms also contain ingredients that help inhibit production of beta amyloid and phosphorylated tau, which are characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease.

So, whether they’re sautéed, stewed, or grilled, enjoy the flavor and nutrition boost mushrooms deliver.

What is PEMF Therapy and is there science for Cancer?

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death worldwide, taking children from their mothers and parents from their children.

Conventional treatments are associated with numerous side effects and only a low percentage of patients achieve complete remission.

Therefore, there is a strong need for new therapeutic solutions such as PEMF.

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy has begun to break into the scientific community as a potential non-toxic and non-invasive cancer therapy.

Studies have shown antineoplastic and antiangiogenic effects of PEMF therapy: PEMFs inhibit cancer growth by disrupting the mitotic spindle and modulate gene expression with specific DNA sequences.

In addition, PEMFs inhibit angiogenesis in tumor tissues, suppressing tumor vascularization and reducing tumor growth, which is essential for fighting cancer cell proliferation.

So far, PEMF stimulation has already been used in various cancer types including skin, breast, prostate, hepatocellular, lung, ovarian, pancreatic, bladder, thyroid, and colon cancer in cell cultures and in animals.

Currently, PEMF therapy in cancer has been documented in humans in small studies – showing promising potential.

One study reported, “Forty‐one patients with advanced HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma) received very low levels of PEMFs modulated at HCC‐specific frequencies (100 Hz–21 kHz) and received three‐daily 60 min outpatient treatments. No adverse reactions were observed during PEMF treatment. Five patients reported complete disappearance and two patients reported decrease in pain shortly after beginning of treatment. Four patients showed a partial response to treatment, while 16 patients (39%) had stable disease for more than 12 weeks. This study shows that PEMF therapy provides a safe and well‐tolerated treatment, as well as evidence of antineoplastic effects in patients with HCC.”

In vivo studies showed a slower tumor growth rate if compared with the untreated control group, confirming that PEMF therapy can modulate the physiology and electrochemistry of cancer cells and influence cell membrane systems and mitosis.

“PEMFs induce some changes in membrane transport capacity through impacting the osmotic potential, ionic valves and leading to reduction in cellular stress factors, increase in the rate of DNA transcription, and modulation of immune response.”

The immune response to helping fight cancer is essential.

PEMFs have shown an immunomodulatory effect, as supported by in vivo evidence showing an increase in tumor necrosis factor alpha levels that induce an anti‐tumoral response – which is an important role in helping the body eliminate cancer cells.

Since PEMF therapy uses 100,000 times lower frequencies compared to radiofrequency, it has confirmed it’s safety and non-toxic aspects.

So far only two clinical studies have used PEMF therapy for cancer treatment, and more studies are still needed and underway.

These studies show that PEMF therapy is safe and promising compared to other available cancer therapies.

More research is needed. But one thing is for sure, PEMF Therapy is a worthy exploration for anyone who has concerns about cancer.

Keto, Carbs, and Bio-Individuality​

We are all innundated with messaging about keto and carbohydrates, but very little of it takes bio-individuality into account.
Taking bio-individuality into account is important for several reasons.
Perhaps the most important reason is that eating a ketogenic diet may have very different effects on aging for different people.
Although there are some studies that suggest that eating a ketogenic diet can improve markers of aging, potentially showing an anti-aging benefit, none of these studies compared results between people that are genetically predisposed to thrive on a keto diet and those that are not.
Several genes affect your ability to make ketone bodies and glucose when your carbohydrate intake is low.
Some people do this well and gain benefits from restricting carbohydrates, while people that do not easily make ketones can generate an excessively and chronically elevated stress response to carbohydrate restriction, and feel like crap.
And research on DNA methylation "aging clocks" suggest that elevated stress hormone actviity are one of the main contributors to epigenetic aging.
So in people that struggle to make ketones when carbohydrates are restriced (i.e. a ketogenic diet), trying to go keto may speed up their aging process.
One of the genes affecting your ability to produce ketones when carbohydreates are restricted is PPAR-alpha.
The PPAR-alpha gene plays a major role in fatty acid metabolism, apolipoproteins, HDL, LDL and ketone body production during fasting.
So variants in the PPAR-alpha gene may cause a lower production of ketone bodies during fasting.
It's function may be impaired by saturated fat intake but is stimulated by omega-3 fatty acids and healthy omega-6 fatty acids from nuts and seeds.
This is why some people guzzle fish oil when they are eating a ketogenic diet. They are trying to goose their PPAR-alpha in order to better produce ketones.
PPAR-alpha is also stimulated by astaxanthin (wild salmon, crab, shrimp, krill), pterostilbene (blueberries, mulberries, cranberries, raw almonds), zinc (high in seafood), tomatoes, Lion’s Mane mushroom, fermented soy, and Gynostemma tea.
Variants in this gene may have evolved in coastal cultures that adapted to a higher omega-3 intake and other foods more common in temperate climates, as well as a consistent food supply.
Think "Mediterranean Diet".
Many people with variants in this gene can often experience rapid drops in blood sugar, have issues with high saturated fat intake (except coconut oil), and may do best on consistent feedings with three meals and multiple snacks throughout the day.
So if you ever wondered whether it would be healthier for you to eat only one or two meals a day, or to eat three meals a day without snacking, or to eat three meals with snacks in-between, your version of this gene may hold the answer.
Stimulating this gene has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and angiogenesis (new blood vessels for cancer cells).
So perhaps Nature responded to the consistent food intake (and certain types of foods) without long fasting times created another way to prevent cancer growth for these people.
Fasting and ketosis may be too much of a stressor for people with variants in PPAR-alpha and in such people may actually age them faster.
For these folks, shifting to lower fasting times and consistent intake of foods that stimulate the PPAR-alpha gene may be a better approach to optimal health than the ketogenic diet.

High Blood Pressure Diagnosis Can Be Tricky

That’s how it can feel when you’re sitting in the doctor’s office waiting for a blood pressure test.

For many, when the doc takes their BP, it soars, and it turns out that has serious consequences.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says that between 15% and 30% of people who are told they have high blood pressure after an in-office “cuff on arm” test do NOT experience hypertension in their day-to-day life.

As a result, people are given unnecessary medication! (And many more who really have it don’t get tested or treated!)

The best way to diagnose high BP, says the USPSTF, is to follow up an in-office test with an ambulatory monitor that you wear for 24 to 48 hours. Every 30 minutes, it assesses your BP — even while you’re sleeping. Then, a reliable diagnosis can be made.

You want to know (and get treated) if your BP is elevated.

High BP causes strokes, heart attack, cognitive decline, and kidney disease. Even if you only have mild hypertension (140 to 159/90 to 99 mmHg) and no overt cardiovascular disease, taking antihypertensive drugs reduces your risk by more than 80%; you also can get your BP down with healthy lifestyle changes.

Sometimes it’s best to do both.

Ingredients​

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 carrots peeled and chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme optional
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil or 1 TB. chopped fresh in season
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups chopped tomatoes or 3 14-ounce cans
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock

Instructions​

  • Melt the butter in a 4-quart saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and carrots and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook another minute.
  • Add all the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Blend with an immersion blender (or in batches in a blender) until smooth.
  • When serving, garnish with sliced green onions, parsley, or fresh basil.

Notes​

Using the thyme and basil gives it a pizza-like flavor, leave out if you'd prefer or replace with oregano.

You can replace 1/4 cup of the stock with orange juice for a unique, bright flavor.

There’s a new kid in town when it comes to cold weather activities - cold workouts. Before you swear it off, there’s good news… A 2012 study published in Plos One found that the ideal temperature for your workout is cool but not cold — anywhere between 45 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. So they’re not quite a Polar Bear Plunge but they challenge what most of us have believed when it comes to working out - that sweating enhances (or proves) the benefits of your workout.

Recent research claims that runners, other athletes and even your average gym-goer is provided with a flurry of benefits that ultimately means a more effective workout. Here are some benefits you can look forward to if you’re willing to brave it...

You Move Faster In The Cold

Both hot and cold temperatures can have an affect your running times. According to a formula Tom Schwarz devised, you can expect a time increase of about 1% when the temperature drops to 30, about a 3% increase at 20, around a 5% increase at 10 degrees Fahrenheit and an 8% increase in time when the temperature hits zero! Basically - the lower the temperature, the greater the effect.

Cool Temperatures Help You Recover Faster

A study done in 2012 at Stanford used a cooling glove to cool a member of the lab – the confessed “gym rat” and frequent coauthor Vinh Cao – between sets of pull-ups.

The glove, which cooled just his hand, seemed to nearly erase his muscle fatigue and made it possible for Cao to do just as many pull-ups as he did the first time around. So they decided to cool him after every other set of pull-ups.

“Then in the next six weeks he went from doing 180 pull-ups total to over 620,” said Heller. “The was a rate of physical performance improvement that was just unprecedented.”

The researchers applied this cooling methods to all sorts of types of exercise - bench press, running, cycling, etc. And in every case, the rates of recovery were dramatic and without evidence that the body had been damaged by overwork.

Precautions

Almost everyone can work out safely in cold weather but it’s important to be aware of the potential risks and proper safety precautions before venturing out. If you have certain conditions, such as asthma, heart problems or Raynaud's disease, check with your doctor first to review any special precautions you need based on your condition or your medications.

  • Make sure your entire body is well protected. The basic rule is to protect your head, fingers and toes. And don’t forget the SPF.
  • Dress in layers - Moisture wicking is essential in all of the layers that touch you especially.
  • Don’t skip your warm-up. Warming up your muscles to avoid injury before starting off on a run is even more essential when the temperature drops.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and your body. If you develop signs of hypothermia, such as slowed thinking, decreased coordination or sluggish speech, it's time to go back inside and warm up until the weather does.
