How to Stop Dangerous Sepsis

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

Many people assume that actor Christopher Reeve, known for his role as Superman, died from complications of paralysis (he became quadriplegic after falling in a horse-riding accident). But that wasn't the case.

What started as a bedsore, a common hazard for people with profound mobility issues, triggered a condition called sepsis.

Special: What Protein Does to Osteoarthritis in Seniors

Sepsis is an overreaction by the body's immune system to chemicals that are released both by infecting bacteria (or viruses or fungi) and by the immune system itself.

The reaction triggers a cascade of events that can damage organ systems and lead to septic shock, severely low blood pressure, and even death.

If that seems like an unusual sequence of events, it isn't. Sepsis is a leading cause of death in the U.S., but fewer than half of Americans are even aware of the illness.

It may surprise you that roughly 1.7 million Americans develop the condition, and some 260,000 die from it every year. In fact, one in three patients who die in the hospital has sepsis.

Signs of sepsis include fever, chills, rapid breathing and heart rate, rash, low blood pressure, and confusion. But they can be overlooked because they are similar to other conditions.

While anyone can develop sepsis, the elderly, children under age 1, and people with compromised immune systems are at the greatest risk.

If you or a loved one has any kind of infection and develops any of these symptoms, ask your doctor if it could be sepsis. Immediate intervention with intensive care that provides antibiotics and fluids can make the difference between life and death.

The Root Causes of Anxiety –
A Functional Medicine Approach
Hey Jim,

Conventional medicine labels anxiety as a neurotransmitter imbalance and typically relies on pharmaceutical drugs to dampen the symptoms. While prescription medications can be a helpful in severe cases, we have so many more tools at our disposal than just medications!

Today I am joined by Evan to go over a functional medicine approach to anxiety. Anxiety is often the proverbial “tip of the iceberg” in functional medicine. It’s the clear and present warning that something is going on below the surface that needs our attention. Our current circumstances may have been the breaking point, but the anxiety manifests in underlying issues. That’s why rectifying these issues is necessary to make anxiety more manageable or even eliminate it!

Natural Health Tip:

The lymphatic system is a major component of the immune system. It helps remove waste from the body such as toxins, abnormal cells, and cancer cells. If you don't contract your muscles daily, they will be overburdened with toxins and abnormal cells which can lead to chronic diseases like cancer.
Therefore, keeping yourself active daily will help prevent cancer in the long run

Hey Jimi,

Take 1-minute and try this out… It’s something called the "Body Oxygen Level Test" and it provides incredible insight into your body’s energy levels and overall health status.

Ready?

Here’s how to do it…

1️⃣ Take a normal breath in through your nose and allow a normal breath out through your nose.

2️⃣ Pinch your nostrils shut and hold your breath.

3️⃣ Count the number of seconds until you feel the FIRST definite desire to breathe, or the first stresses of your body urging you to breathe. (Don’t push your body to your absolute breath hold LIMIT – just until the first desire to breathe).

4️⃣ Release and resume normal breathing. Your breathing should be normal and calm. (If you’re breathing hard, you held it too long).

How many seconds did you get?

Here’s the bottom line:

  • A healthy, vital, energetic body should be able to hold for at LEAST 40 seconds.
  • If you got LESS THAN 25 seconds, it indicates dysfunctional breathing and a body in poor health (low energy/vitality).
You may not know it, but our BREATHING habits are a major key to health and high energy levels.

And dysfunctional breathing (which the majority of people have) is a major cause of chronic low energy levels and chronic anxiety.

What if you could invest 10 minutes every morning for the next month to DOUBLE your energy levels?

Interested?

We’re incredibly excited to share a new live virtual event with you from energy expert Ari Whitten. He’s calling it "the single most powerful method to increase energy levels that I’ve found in 25 years of studying health science."

This live virtual event is happening TOMORROW on November 10th at 7:30pm Eastern…

You can register for FR*EE right HERE.

In this event, Ari is giving away the secrets of how to use specific breathing practices to:

  • A powerful 10-minute morning routine that dramatically increases energy levels
  • Rewire your nervous system out of stress mode and dramatically decrease anxiety levels
  • Breathing practices to improve your fitness level and endurance dramatically
  • Why deep breathing is actually bad advice (and what the right approach is to increase your energy and decrease anxiety)
  • How to improve your health by increasing oxygen delivery to your cells
  • The 4 keys to optimal breathing (and how to rewire your brain into doing it automatically)
  • Why dysfunctional breathing is a common cause of brain fog and mood problems (and how improving circulation to your brain with breathing can fix it)
  • Why breathing practices are often the secret key to helping you sleep deeper than you have since you were a kid
👉 Grab your FR*EE spot in this live virtual event HERE.

It’s happening TOMORROW - Thursday, November 10th at 7:30pm Eastern. (Register now and mark your calendar).

See you there!

*- Dementia plummets by nearly one-third among U.S. seniors, RAND says -*

The prevalence of dementia in the United States is declining among people over age 65, falling dramatically from 2000 to 2016, a RAND Corp. study says.

Nationwide, the age-adjusted prevalence of dementia fell to 8.5% of people over age 65 in 2016, down by nearly one-third from 12.2% of people over age 65 in 2000, according to the researchers.

Females are more likely to live with dementia, but the sex difference has narrowed, the study found.

Among men, the prevalence of dementia fell by 3.2 percentage points, from 10.2% to 7.0% over the 16-year span. The decrease was larger among women, down 3.9 percentage points, from 13.6% to 9.7%.

Differences in the prevalence of dementia between Black men and White men also narrowed, the investigators said.

Among non-Hispanic White men, the prevalence of dementia decreased from 9.3% to 6.6%, while among non-Hispanic Black men the rate fell from 17.2% to 9.9%.

P?ter Hudomiet, the study's lead author, said that while the reasons for the decline in the prevalence of dementia are not certain, the trend is good news for older Americans.

He told UPI that the researchers expected a general decline in dementia prevalence, similar to several recent publications from the United States and Europe.

"We were less sure about how inequalities in dementia changed recently," he said.

Hudomiet, an economist at RAND, a nonprofit research organization based in California, told UPI in an email: "These favorable findings were somewhat surprising because health inequalities were reported to have increased in recent decades. ... Fortunately, unlike in mortality, we see a narrowing gap in dementia."

The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

According to RAND, an estimated 6.2 million U.S. adults aged 65 or older had dementia in 2021. Age is the strongest risk factor for dementia, so increasing life expectancies are expected to substantially increase the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias -- from about 50 million to 150 million affected people worldwide by 2050.

But the researchers cited "growing evidence" that age-adjusted dementia prevalence has been declining in developed countries, possibly due to rising levels of education, a reduction in smoking and better treatment of key cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure.

Hudomiet said it's also possible that, given numerous studies being released on steps to take to avoid dementia, some of the decline may be attributed to people heeding such advice.

"It is also plausible that other behavior factors, such as smoking [cessation], cognitive activities, social activities, etc., played a role," he said.

The researchers found a narrowing sex gap in dementia since 2000, "which occurred at the same time when the labor force participation rate rapidly increased among women," he added.

The RAND modeling looked at cognitive status based on a broad set of cognitive measures from 21,000-plus people from the nationally representative Health and Retirement Study, which has been ongoing for more than two decades.

Researchers said the model can produce accurate estimates of dementia prevalence by age, sex, education, race and ethnicity, and by a measure of lifetime earnings.

Higher education contributed, in a statistical sense, to about 40% of the reduction in dementia prevalence among men and 20% of the reduction among women, RAND said, while "changes in the older population by age, race and ethnicity, and cardiovascular risk factors mattered less."

Yet, various demographic groups are closing the education divide, RAND noted.

"Closing the education gap across racial and ethnic groups may be a powerful tool to reduce health inequalities in general and dementia inequalities in particular, an important public health policy goal," Hudomiet said.

The RAND study was funded by the National Institute on Aging, a part of the National Institutes of Health.

Hi Jimi,
Struggling with your weight?
If you answered yes, you’ll want to read this.
It’s a blog listing the toxins that mimic estrogen in your body and cause weight gain.
These toxins not only influence your body fat levels, they also influence WHERE you store your fat (hint: your waistline).
And getting them out of your body should be step #1 if you’re trying to lose weight…
Otherwise you’ll constantly be fighting an uphill battle.
Figuring this out is something that helped me A LOT on my weight loss journey.
Read more here
It wasn’t until I dealt with the toxins that were causing my estrogen imbalance, that I started to shed weight.

How genetics can contribute to fatigue
One of the best ways to determine whether your clients and patients have a higher likelihood than average of developing chronic fatigue is to look at their genes.

Variations in genes, also known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), can result in biochemical pathway disruptions, and when these SNPs affect the mitochondria, nutrient metabolism, and hormone receptor sites, energy production can be impaired and fatigue can result.

For example, there’s a SNP ATP5G3 which codes for an enzyme called mitochondrial ATP synthase, which catalyzes adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis. When this SNP is present, it’s possible for ATP production to be impaired and energy to be low.

Energy is also impaired when there are SNPs in Cytochrome P450 (CYP) pathways that detoxify a variety of chemicals. It’s important that you look at what substances are detoxified by the particular CYP enzyme, and suggest to your client that they limit their exposure to these.

Someone with SNPs in the CTLA4 gene is at increased risk of Hashimoto’s, and someone with BCM01 SNPs has a higher likelihood of thyroid receptor resistance because it's coded for Vitamin A, and deficiency of Vitamin A is one of the causes of damage to the thyroid receptors, as is excess homocysteine. And excess homocysteine can result from SNPs in MTHFR, MTRR, and others.

I’ll be going into a lot more detail about the SNPs related to energy production at our upcoming SHINE Conference, Improve Chronic Fatigue Outcomes with Functional Nutrition and Nutrigenomic Strategies.

I’ll share some beautiful charts summarizing the energy related and mitochondrial SNPs, for easy reference when you’re working with your patients and clients. And one of our speakers is Dr. Christy Sutton, creator of my favorite genetic report Genetic Detoxification.

The conference starts in just a few days. Be sure to sign up now.

Has a Spell been caste upon the unsuspecting masses? Does the apparent mass-psychosis of an allegedly sentient species suggest a stealth contagion both insidious and pernicious? The concept is not new, and Native Americans went so far as to coin the term Wetiko to acknowledge the phenomenon.

Wetiko is a cannibalizing force driven by insatiable greed, appetite without satisfaction, consumption as an end in itself, and war for its own sake, against other tribes, species, and nature, and even against the individual’s own humanity.

NUTRITION BITE

This NB looks at an often-overlooked c*ncer trigger that is all around most of us, every day. Even while you’re reading this!
So what is it??
Electromagnetic Fields, or EMFs.
Electromagnetic fields are all around you.
Every cell phone and wireless device emits an EMF of some sort, and EMFs are produced literally everywhere electricity is used.
There are two basic types of EMFs [1]:
1. High-frequency EMFs are ionizing radiation that can damage DNA cells. This type of EMF is typically generated by X-ray imaging machines, CT scans, radioactive elements, and tanning beds. Even the sunlight generates a high-frequency EMF thanks to the UV radiation.
2. Mid- and low-frequency EMFs are non-ionizing radiation of the sort generated by your cell phone, hair dryer, washing machine, and microwave. This can be broken down into two subtypes:
  • Radiofrequency radiation
  • Extremely low frequency EMFs
There is a great deal of controversy and debate surrounding EMFs and their potential link to cancer and other chronic health conditions.
In 2018, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) [2] classified EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”, due to links between EMFs and forms of cancer like gliomas (malignant brain cancer) and leukemia among electrical workers [3].
As one study pointed out, “Recent studies demonstrate elevations in rates of brain cancer and acoustic neuroma only on the side of the head where individuals used their cell phone. Individuals who begin exposure at younger ages are more vulnerable.” [4]
There is no hard-and-fast clinical evidence backing up the theory that EMFs are definitely going to harm you, but given even this limited research, it’s definitely worth reducing exposure in order to limit potential health risks.
With that in mind, you might be interested in the new groundbreaking report called '15 Little-Known Environmental Cancer Triggers You May Be Exposed To.”

Hi Jimi,

The World Health Organization estimates that, after age 60, 5 to 8% of us will live with dementia at some point 🤯

What if we could lessen our chances of being part of that statistic?

With that in mind, I’d like to share a wonderful ebook by Dr. Rosedale, called "20 Mushrooms and Herbs to Improve Memory and Prevent Dementia & Alzheimer’s".
This handy guide will let you in on the latest scientific discoveries you can try - from your own kitchen!

Find out about ingredients that can help:

  • Boost your brain function and memory by 50%. Scientists in Singapore found that seniors who made this one simple tweak to their diet had up to 50% lower risk of age-related cognitive and memory decline!
  • One mushroom to eat with three critical vitamins proven to lower your dementia and Alzheimer's risk (you probably have this mushroom in your kitchen right now)
  • Make your memory great again with this world’s most powerful stress-busting herb! This yummy spice helps increase blood flow, helps prevent inflammation, and helps reduce the damage caused by free radicals (on page 49!)

And more!

You will also receive a limited free reservation to Dr. Rosedale’s groundbreaking anti-aging masterclass. His aim is to help us slow down cognitive decline and keep our mind sharp throughout the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even beyond.
