Kangertech Frustrations, Part II - Red Coil

OK, I'm getting to the end of teather with this vaping business!

I have the Kangertech Subbox. Cost me £70. I had some leaking issues but they are more or less sorted. My latest issue is more serious and hoping someone can help.

I changed the coil to the OCC 1.5Q 10w-26w instead of using the other, more powerful one (I have not tried using that RBC deck thingy yet or whatever its called). After changing it and using the device at 16W, I was delighted. Much smoother flow, tasted better, less popping and crackling. And less leakes. That was from Friday...until this evening.

All of a sudden, I started to get this horrid burnt ash taste. When I look inside, the element glows red when pressing the button. I believe this is referred to as a dry hit?

So I poured the juice away and refilled it just as I have for the last few days. Even though the thing was wet, I poured some juice direct onto the two little holes either side too (having read other threads) and filled it up again with fresh juice. Still the same. The thing burns red and the taste just about makes me puke. There is steam when I puff on it but it tastes gash.

I have the air holes setting set to the two small holes, rather than fully wide open, just as I always have done.

I currently can't use it. It is useless to me. I am so fed up I can't explain it. I spent that much on it thinking it would be a good, reliable solution meaning I'd have hassle free vaping. I've already taken one back for leaking and now this, with the other one. I can't possibly say to the wife that I'm going to go and buy another one.

What am I doing wrong with it this time? (these things are like computers when people say "can't I just do X" and there's a million things to do first. I thought I just had to open it, pour jiuce in, and press the button, but reading other threads it seems like this business has many variables as a complex coded program)

Sounds like your coil reached its end. Once they're burned there's no saving them. Do you have another one you can use? If so, be sure to prime it properly and let it sit for a few minutes before firing it. Hope this helps!

Its not that complicated at all..just a basic learning curve..
Prime your new coil in the center ..this may take several drops of juice..you'll know when its fully primed when it can't soak up anymore juice, also the cotton in the juice holes will loose the white color and look wet..also make sure the coil is screwed in tight..
Fill the tank and screw the base with the primed coil back into the tank..install it back on the mod..
Start rather low taking a couple pulls and gradually bump the power up to your desired sweet spot..wish I could help more! Good luck

Amanda - but I only took it out the box and used it for the first time on Friday :-(

Smacksy - I will try your tip. The thing looks wet through to me but I didn't pour any directly through the top of the coil - just the two holes at the side. I'll try it and report back...

You're burning something, that's for sure. I'm running mine between 8 and 11 watts. And I for one, have run into a huge number of counterfeit OCC coils lately. I've been strictly RBA since this last purchase of OCC.

But, we need more details to help you out here.
What's your pg/vg ratio?
Are you allowing it to sit for about 10 minutes before the first hit after you put a new coil on?
How often are you hitting this thing?
Do you occasionally pull on it a few times to pull the juice in, without firing it, after 3 or 4 hard hits? (I do)

Another question for you. Why are you looking at the coil? By the time it glows cherry red, it's pretty close to peak temps. I only look at mine, when I pre-burn an RBA. Just curious.

And there it is. Didn't drip it through the top.

depending on your juice
if it is say over 70% vg there is another trick
take a pin and poke the cotton from both holes
these are vertical coils so dont push too much. just enough for the pin to piece the cotton a hair wiggle the pin around to open up the cotton
do this 2 or 3 times on both sides
this allows thick juice to get to the wick better

But I was saying if it's burned you're not going to get it work - it's toast!

OK, so I ventured instead into the world of the RBC (or whatever it's called - the thing you make yourself with the cotton). And I'm more or less back in business. I guess, as Amanda says, that the other one is probably toasted internally so will always be rubbish. I don't understand why it worked so well for a couple of days though without me priming it from the top. I just assumed it all soaked in from the sides. You live and learn.

So with the newly whicked RBC chamber, it seems to be OK. It's not as good as the other one I had in - not as smooth and the 'hit' feels quite hot. But it's a seperate issue, perhaps for a different, third post : how best to whick them.

Thanks for the help guys

If you glow an OCC coil red, it's toast. It fries the cotton.

When you first install one, drip several drops in the center alowly, giving them time to hit the cotton. Then, Pl fill the tank and take a few primer pulls, puffs without power.

Also, I can't remember if the subbox has a screen or not. I know one of them does and one doesnt. If it does, make sure the ohm reading on the screen is in range of the coil you put it. If it reads a coil too high, it shoots power up.

Iv'e had problems with all of my Kanger coils since day one. I had problems with the stock OCC cols in the subtank mini, the nickle OCC coils and even with the new standard SSOCC and nickle coils for my NEBOX. So today I remembered this thread and this post and I grabbed a sewing needle and poked small holes in my new SSOCC coil's wicking holes. It made a HUGE difference. I am currently using a 80VG/20PG juice and the wicking finally keeps up. This is probably the best vape I have ever had with any Kanger coil. Thanks for the tip @Mattp169

You'll get the feel for the RBA. You can mess with the coil resistance when you start wrapping your own. You can also mess with the wicking, airflow, and power settings. I suggest running the airflow all the way open if you haven't already. At 0.5ohms I run around 20w. If I go to ~25w it gets too warm for my taste, and at ~15w it loses flavor quickly. It's all subjective though. As far as wicking, I found the "pancake method" works the best in my sub tanks. I was ready to throw my RBA in the trash the first couple times I built it. Once my shop helped me get it right, I can't see using the tank any other way.

You can skip to about 2:30 to get to the important part...
