The reason is to maintain airflow. Air underneath the coil is not in motion, air flowing across the top of the coil combines with RISING atomised juice and due to the shape of the top cap, begins to swirl into a vortex (this is especially true in dual coil setups). This serves two purposes, it thickens the vapour, and also cools it down. So the two important factors are: Air volume, and air flow!
Merely dripping onto the wick is key. Some people think juice needs to be mashed into the wick. Remember, liquids naturally want to flow along a surface.

Oh, I see. So this will still happen if you have a single coil setup with two opposing airflow holes open? It would, right?

There are many ways some people I know use non-resistant wire to kinda hang coils around I have a friend at a shop that does the craziest things you can get non resistant wire its pretty cheat its basically umm silver.. I have tried it but have seen little verifiable result yours may be different
