Pink Fairy Armadillo

The pink fairy armadillo is the smallest armadillo on Earth, and quite possibly the strangest, looking almost like a giant shrimp. It lives in central Argentina, mostly underground in sandy soils. It moves so fast through loose dirt that people call it a “sand swimmer.” It has fur and a soft shell which helps it twist and burrow in tight spaces. Here is a quick overview of the weird parts of its body: meet the pink fairy armadillo.​
What makes it extra interesting is how little is known about them. Sightings are apparently rare, and it is not well researched or tracked in terms of population. That’s why its conservation status is often treated with caution, and why protecting intact sandy habitats matters so much, since we don’t fully know the impact on this exotic creature. Today’s Deep Dive is a guest post from my dear friend Beth Lambert, Founder of Documenting Hope (an organization I’ve worked with for years as a filmmaker, capturing stories of children who have healed from “irreversible” conditions).
Documenting Hope’s newest case report, published in the March issue of Integrative Medicine, A Clinician’s Journal, centered on the use of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet as a therapeutic intervention for a boy diagnosed with autism. The case report chronicles his health history and symptom reversal achieved through intensive nutritional intervention. This paper is part of a growing body of literature that tells a very different story about autism than the one most clinicians were trained to believe. When you look closely at that literature, a consistent pattern emerges. A child once meeting full criteria for autism gradually regains language, connection, and function until, ultimately, those diagnostic criteria are no longer met.​
This recovery is the kind of outcome that continues to be dismissed or classified as a case of misdiagnosis. And yet, this story sits atop a mounting pile of similar case reports as well as an entire library of peer reviewed papers explaining many of the underlying biological and physiological mechanisms that result in the syndrome of symptoms that we label as autism.​
The evidence is clear: autism symptoms, in at least a significant subset of children, can improve dramatically and in some cases fully resolve when underlying medical issues are identified and thoughtfully treated.
As far back as the 1970s, there were published reports of children diagnosed with autism who later no longer met diagnostic criteria. Gajzago and Prior described cases of “recovery” in what was then called Kanner syndrome.[1]Bemporad later documented the adult outcome of a child previously diagnosed with autism who went on to function typically.[2] These early reports were often set aside as anomalies, but they established an important observation: the autism diagnosis could be overcome, at least in some cases.

I'm excited to share a follow-up interview today with stage IV melanoma survivor Johann Ilgenfritz.

Johann's story is incredible.

In 2011, he had a heart attack, and six months later, he was diagnosed with melanoma. Radiation treatments failed, and Johann's cancer spread; then, doctors told him he had about twelve months to live.

Most people would have accepted that prognosis. Johann didn't.

He started researching diet and lifestyle, and this changed the way he viewed disease. Instead of seeing cancer as the cause, he understood it was a symptom of a body under stress.

Dr. Crandall: Digital 'Twin' Hearts Improve Treatment

A new study suggests that being married may be linked to a lower risk of developing certain cancers.

Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center analyzed more than 4 million cancer cases across 12 states and found that adults who had never married were more likely to be diagnosed with several types of cancer compared to those who were or had been married.

Specifically, men who never married were 70% more likely to develop cancer than married men. And women who never married were 85% more likely to develop cancer than women who were or had been married.

Experts theorize that marriage may reflect healthier behaviors and stronger support systems.

“I think the takeaway is if you're married, you're going to probably live a longer life than if you're single, because you have a social support system that benefits you in the long run,” cardiologist Dr. Chauncey Crandall told Newsmax’s “Bianca Across the Nation.”

Crandall says having a partner often means built-in encouragement to maintain healthier habits and keep up with medical care.

Researchers believe differences in screening rates, smoking, alcohol use, and other lifestyle factors may help explain the link. Married individuals may be more likely to attend routine checkups and follow through on preventive screenings.

For women, earlier childbearing — more common among married individuals — may also play a role in reducing the risk of certain cancers, including breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancers, Crandall noted.

Still, experts emphasize that being single does not mean a higher risk is inevitable — but it may require more intentional health habits.

“The biggest thing about being single, we see more alcoholism. We see more isolation, cigarette smoking, and multiple sexual partners. This is one of the biggest drivers of cancer in single people,” explained Crandall, editor of the popular newsletter Dr. Crandall's Heart Health Report.

Crandall stressed the importance of building strong social connections and staying proactive about health for both married and single adults.

Last month, Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) yielded to industry pressure and proposed a rule rolling back critical public health protections finalized in 2024 for ethylene oxide emissions from commercial sterilizer facilities. Ethylene oxide is a colorless, typically odorless, flammable gas used to sterilize some medical equipment and spices. Ethylene oxide is also an aggressive carcinogen, especially when inhaled.
Long-term exposure can damage the nervous system and increases people’s risk of developing cancer. Children are particularly sensitive to ethylene oxide’s harmful effects because the chemical remains in their bodies longer than it does in adults.
Why does this matter?
Nearly 14 million people in the United States and Puerto Rico live within five miles of a commercial sterilizer. These sterilizers are often in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color and compound existing health risks from other sources of pollution.
What can you do?
A public comment period is open until May 1, and we need your voice. Submit a comment today urging the EPA to keep these 2024 standards in place.

Kale is one of those ingredients I come back to again and again, especially in spring when I'm craving something fresh, light and deeply nourishing.

It's one of the most nutrient-dense greens you can eat.

And honestly? It's so much more versatile than people give it credit for.

Here's why your hormones love kale:

Sprouts are a powerhouse for hormone balance
Kale & Quinoa Salad

Serves 4


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked quinoa
  • 2 cups chopped kale, ribs removed
  • 1 cup garbanzo beans (optional — omit if you don't tolerate legumes)
  • 2 clementine oranges, peeled and sliced
  • ⅓ cup chopped pistachios
  • ⅓ cup pomegranate seeds
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh clementine juice
  • 1 garlic clove, pressed or minced
  • 1 teaspoon sumac, divided
  • ½ teaspoon dried mint, crushed
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup (or a few drops of stevia)

Directions:


  1. In a salad bowl, combine the quinoa, kale, garbanzo beans, orange slices, pistachios and pomegranate seeds.
  2. In a small bowl or jar, whisk together the olive oil, maple syrup, garlic, ½ teaspoon sumac, dried mint, salt and a few grinds of black pepper.
  3. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss until evenly coated.
  4. Dust with the remaining ½ teaspoon of sumac and fresh mint.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 2 days.
Make this a complete hormone-balancing meal by pairing it with your favorite protein, grilled chicken or wild-caught salmon are both great options with this.
