Thanks to a broke plane I got home at 3:30PM instead of 12 noon yesterday. My son-in-law dropped off his car in front of my house and he and I walked down to the fairgrounds for the county spring fair. My wife, daughter, and grandbabies were already there. Being an old phart I got in for free instead of paying $15. This was the first full on fair since the 'rona bullstuff and it was pretty packed. The fair is a big thing for the town we live in especially for the 4H and FFA kids. I was glad to see it in full swing.
Good to see things finally returnin to normal after the big farst scare:rolleyes:. Sounds like a great time.

If there's anything I can imagine you will never miss about your work, it's air travel. It's always something, mechanical delay, weather delay, crew hasn't arrived, the aircraft is late arriving from its previous stop, the endless repetitions of the airport announcements, the farter sitting in the seat next to you on the plane.

Soon, very soon.

When I fly, I leave packaged items on the meal tray for the flight attendants. Many years ago I read the book "Plane Insanity" about the lives of airline employees. They never have time to dash into the terminal for a meal between flights because they have to settle the purse from the previous flight's drink purchases, have to accept delivery of catering for the next flight, etc. Their shift is always several flights in a row, so they sometimes go hungry after breakfast has worn off, and dinner isn't going to be until after the last flight of the day when they get off late at night. They hope to get unclaimed passenger meals, but it hardly ever happens.

I recently tested to see if that's still true. I asked the flight attendant if my uneaten unopened yogurt and packaged cookie would get thrown away, or saved for the next flight. She answered "the next flight will have its own catering, but the crew will eat that stuff. We take unopened food from the trays when we clear". Great, I said, handing her the yogurt and cookie.

On her way back to the galley she turned back to me and said "I hope you don't think that's tacky". I said the tacky thing would be to throw good food in the trash.

My inner high horse was all happy with that outcome.

If there is a meal served in first class, there are trays for all the crew to eat between services.

The worst thing is the FAs aren't paid until the door closes and stop getting paid when it opens. Totally unfair to them since there is a lot of work performed by them well before the first passenger arrives and well after the last passenger leaves. I always treat the FAs with the respect they deserve.

All airlines are now cashless and most are going cardless where you need to enter your card via the app before take off if you plan to buy drinks and/or food.

Next time you fly, Goph, ask again. I was in first class when I queried the flight attendant and got my answer about how happy they are to find unopened packaged foods on the meal trays when they clear. That was on a domestic flight, SAT to Newark, 3 hours 45 minutes, and they didn't get a meal.

They don't all belong to the same union, so it may vary by airline. They are paid a per diem for expenses during their shifts, including food. They just don't have time to go into the terminal, order and wait for it, due to their onboard responsibilities between flights.

I think in 2022 Delta started paying the flight attendants half their normal hourly rate for the boarding/greeting process (before the aircraft door is closed). That still is, IMO, arbitrary and unfair, since they are fully on duty at that time.

Things are always changing. I'll have to try to initiate that conversation again next time I fly. The Mexico trip at Christmas 2022 was my last air trip, but that wasn't the flight when I asked the flight attendant about what happens to unopened food items left on the tray. That conversation was 2-3 years ago.

At least on American they do as I see them carrying trays to the rear galley.

That makes sense. American Airlines flight attendants are in a different union than Delta, United, Frontier, Hawaiian, Spirit and Alaska. Elliott Hester, who wrote "Plane Insanity" was a flight attendant, but I don't remember which airline he was with.
