I made a standalone of Citrus Mix at 2% the other day. Such a nice, bright flavor. Kinda orange, kinda sweet. I like it a lot. Curious how it'd do for the Tic Tac.

Sent from my stupid iPhone because I don't have an Android.

A package arrived for me today from Eliquidmart. I got 6 new FA flavors. All smell amazing, as usual. Even the ylang ylang.

But ALSO in that order was a bottle of Cap Vanilla Custard v2. Now, I've been vaping for a year, and never ventured into custardland. I don't like real life custard, so I thought it off putting. How wrong I was. This is the single best standalone flavor I've ever had. Excuse my excitement, and for plugging a non FA flavor here, but I'm literally blown away. Oh the ideas I have for mixing!

I must be the only person who can't stand the stuff - it has the weirdest taste to me! Everytime I make something with it I end up dumping it. I love real custard, and this one to me is not custard LOL

Custard is new territory for me as well. Need to find something to give me the scorched/carmalized sugar flavorI. They "egg flavor" is the reason I never tried it before, this doesn't have that. I've only had v2 though.

You're not the only one who isn't a huge fan of Cap Vanilla Custard. I just got v2, didn't flip over it, could probably use it in recipes, but I still prefer my Vienna Cream concoctions. When I went to 'file away' the bottle, I found I do indeed have the original. It must be nearly a year old, and still full. One sniff told me why - the diacetyl smell just makes me nauseous. On a more positive note, v2 clearly has less of the stuff. I'd still bet minor body parts they reduced those chemicals but still used the subs over 1-2%, because it still has that distinctive smell/taste I get from others that do. I might try some of the other 'new formulations' as they come out, if I can get tiny, cheap bottles from bullcity. Kids do love my other Capellas in smoothies and almond milk.

Oh, okay. I heard lemon and strawberry in the same breathe and my eyes glazed over!

Havok, have you mixed Lemon Sicily and Strawberry yet? Someone said equal percents made a good strawberry lemonade.

Now I need to mix some Vienna and VC v2.
I remember reading HIC you referred to a FA flavor as American custard, can't find it now

It doesn't taste grapefruity to you, Huck? ...which reminds me, there used to be grapefruit Tic Tacs. I wonder what ever happened to those. They were better than the new Tic Tac flavors.

No, if it's something I said about FA flavorings, it would be that FA Custard is NOT American vanilla custard flavor. At all. It's a match for what Italians call custard, which is thinner texture, often includes some citrus rather than heavy vanilla, and is used over fresh fruits.

oh - and I probably said that Vienna Cream is closer to what Americans call 'custard' than FA's Custard flavor is.

I did. 3% each and only made 5ml. It is pretty good but faded a bit overnight and haven't revisited. Might try to take the strawberry to 4% and see how it fares.

No, HIC. I really don't get grapefruity, so far. I've quite enjoyed it. ATM, I have WG INW orange going with a touch of Vanilla Classic & Fresh Cream based on something I read in the INW thread elsewhere. TART. Odd. But, I do like it.

Side note--- not a fan of the Vanilla Custard from Caps, either. I have 6mls. :( Price was right, though.

the 200 count box ? lol. ya those are the ones we get to . the center is the hard part I think to. I know you will crack the code tho

I agree - I also have both, but a bigger bottle of V1 (the tiny bottle of V2). There's something in it I can't put my finger on, but it turns my stomach. But I put the V1 in the kitchen cupboard, and my daughter might like it in something she eats! I used to make a lot of custard (I'm from the UK), and this is nothing like it to me!

I have been testing my individual flavour art flavors to get a better feel for them. I kind of have an idea of different flavor strengths. My question now, is how do I use that information to make a recipe? Lets say I have 3 flavors; passion fruit, mango, peach. To me, the passion fruit is strongest. I can clearly taste it at 3-5%. The mango, to me, is weaker than the passion fruit. I can taste it at 3%, but the flavor does not get much stronger up to 7%. The peach, is very subtle. It takes 6% just to barely taste that it is peach, and still not that strong.

Do I go higher on the peach, since it is subtle? And go low on passion/mango? Or do I use the passion fruit's strength as an advantage making it the main flavor, adding mango and peach undertones?

Generally you will drop the percentage when a flavor is mixed with other things. But it's going to be trial and error! I find that using flavor art I usually use betwen 4% and 10% flavoring. Very rarely do I use 10% - average is probably around 6%. But you may find it different!

Re-reading, I don't think I answered your question clearly. Yes, it depends what you want the main flavor to be, and give that the higher percentage - at least that's what I'd do! But probaby not a single flavor at 7% if that makes sense.

Hi Amanda, is that your total % in a recipe or a single flavor? Let me try to rephrase my question; I want to make a recipe with flavors A, B, and C. A is the strongest flavor, followed by B, and C. Let's use an example of 10% flavor. How do I balance these flavors without having them mute each other, since I know A is the strongest, and C is the weakest. I hope that makes sense.

If your standalone percents look like this:
flavor A 3%
flavor B 6%
flavor C 9%

...and you want an equal mix of those flavors, you'd do this
flavor A (1/3 of 3%) = 1%
flavor B (1/3 of 6%) = 2%
flavor C (1/3 of 9%) = 3%

(harder example coming up next)

I want to make a recipe with flavors A, B, and C. A is the strongest flavor, followed by B, and C.

(more complex example)

Instead of an equal mix of those flavors, say you want to taste mostly flavor A. You want flavors B and C equally together in the background. Instead of 1/3 for each, think in percents like this:

flavor A 50%
flavor B 25%
flavor C 25%
(They add up to 100% of the flavoring in the recipe. It'll taste half like flavor A, half like an equal mix of B and C).

Your standalone percents the three flavors are still like this:
flavor A 3%
flavor B 6%
flavor C 9%

multiply to get your recipe:
Flavor A 50% of 3% = (.5 x .03) = 1.5%
Flavor B 25% of 6% = (.25 x .06) = 1.5%
Flavor C 25% of 9% = (.25 x .09) = 2.25%

(comments next...)

(...comments, because I'm long-winded)

My recipe ideas all start on a post-it note listing the flavors I want to use. My box of flavorings is littered with rough ideas like this one:

Maple-Walnut Ice Cream
30% Maple
30% Walnut
30% Vienna Cream (sweet vanilla cream)
10% Fresh Cream

Those notes often sit around a long time before I ever mix anything. I'll get some real maple-walnut ice cream and reconsider those percents...Hm, should the maple flavor be stronger than the walnut? Is there really that much vanilla in the real stuff? Would this be better with chocolate added.... I'll modify that post-it as much as I need to before I ever mix. I don't consider standalone percents or do any math until I'm sure the flavor balance I've written is what I want to taste.

This also helps explains the odd foods in my kitchen and lack of weight loss, lol!

You misunderstood, I think. I can vape it straight even at 10% and get nothing. Nada. Just a weird thing with me, I guess.

that stinks, HIC.. but i get it.. kind of like my better half not getting the cherry flavor.. :(

Hey HIC, Burtakia(what I'm calling your 1% Burley / 1% Latakia) is a very unique flavor. I was fairly confident I would like it and mixed up 30ml a couple of weeks ago. I must say it's not really what I was expecting and didn't really know what to think about it at first but for some reason I keep reaching for that bottle. I'm going to have to mix more soon.:D

I labeled mine "Burley Lats" thinking of the muscles, but I prefer Burtakia. I use FA Burley quite a bit, nice tobacco flavor to me.

Just FYI - I found this on Cap's site:
New Vanilla Custard Flavor Concentrate V2
DIACETYL,ACETOIN,ACETYL PROPIONYL FREE

Important info for anyone concerned about diacetyl and substitutes:
The legal (OSHA) definition of diacetyl-free allows up to 1%: " “Diacetyl-containing” means containing diacetyl at a concentration of 1% or more by weight."

The legal definition for Acetoin-free allows up to 1%.

The legal definition for Acetylpropionyl-free allows up to 1%

Flavoring could contain just under the legal limit for each ingredient and still be legally described "diacetyl, acetoin, acetylpropionly free" - despite containing nearly 3% diketones.

Other diketones exist; I've never been able to determine if any flavoring companies currently use any besides the 3 listed above.

Only 2 flavoring manufacturers (that I know of) have ever released the results of lab testing: Flavour Art and The Flavor Apprentice.

FlavorArt's e-cig line contains NO diketones and is the only company to test cytotoxicity of actual vapor from their flavorings: http://clearstream.flavourart.it/site/?p=181&lang=en

The Flavor Apprentice has been listing (<.5%, 1-10%) percentage of acetoin and/or acetylpropionyl for each flavoring that contains any: http://shop.perfumersapprentice.com/specsheetlist.aspx

Decision of what we vape is our individual choice, always. I'm just putting this info here for those who are concerned. Only FA and TFA release actual lab results. They have chosen to give vapers this info. Other companies can legally claim they have 0%, yet have nearly 3% total diketones (perhaps more with creative chemists who use other diketones).

At least 1 Flavor West flavoring that was claimed "diacetyl-free" was proven by an independent lab to be far beyond legal limits. So far as I know, NO penalty has resulted. (thus providing an example of what happened to one company who outright misrepresented their ingredients to vapers)

Two short notes for my previous post:

* The 1% limits to qualify as "xxxx-free" are OSHA guidelines for the manufacturing process, intended to protect workers

* There are NO FDA or other regulations concerning content of e-liquids - none whatsoever. yet.

Any recommendation on % of FA Mandarin Orange to use? In testing the flavor 2% is almost undetectable for me. I'm looking for a Dreamsicle type of thing after I test things individually.

I was thinking that there might be a caveat to the statement on their site. Kinda like nonalcoholic beer has up to .5% alcohol.

A good example!

Also like breakfast cereal can contain 75 insect fragments per 50 grams. And 1 mouse hair, and 5 fly eggs, and 1 maggot. Chances of getting the max of ALL those in a cereal are (hopefully!) slim. Chances of a flavor manufacturer pushing the limits would seem higher, because those ingredients are generally considered tasty.

Hey Orange Tic Tac fans - I have a question.

Do you want the flavor of sucking the outer half of orange tic tacs?
or the inner 1/3 sour part after the outside is dissolved?
or what you'd taste if you crunched up a mouthful of them and got both together?

The inner and outer layers have some flavors in common, but different major supporting flavors.
I'm using all FA flavorings and getting good flavor matches to the various tic tac 'anatomy' :)
Good thing I bought the giant tub o' tacs, lol!
