If you are looking for a rule of thumb, the only one I can give is use the wire gauge that will let you build your coil to your ohm level with somewhere between 5 to 10 wraps around a 3/32" drill bit (about 2.5mm). This makes it easy to wick properly. Once you built a few you'll know what works best for your device and you personal preferences.

Oh, and you're not a pest. Better to ask than make mistakes. Besides there are better builders than I around here. Hopefully they will correct me if I get something wrong.

Thinner wire is a PITA to wick!:D
Thicker wire takes a little longer to heat up and cool down, so you might have to adjust your technique a little bit (hit the fire button a second before you hit it, let go a second before you're done with your hit). Lower resistance (like 0.7-0.9 where I like it, 1 on the KFL) makes more sense with thicker wire (you'd only get like 1 or 2 wraps with thinner wire - what kinda coil is that?). I use 27g. I'm guessing most people start with 28g, then move down to 26g or thicker. I'm never gonna go above or below my range, so I'm pretty happy with my 27g.

Ooh, you can have so much fun now with your new stuff! ;)

Got it guys :)

Thank you all for being patient and answering my questions.....

whew, it only took me about a year to learn everything I think I need to know ... :D from a cheapo cigalike that I bought at walmart - WALMART for crying out loud! and loving that I would no longer smell like old man beard to a tiny 650 spinner...and on and on.

now that I've switched to FA - which was a HUGE improvement, found HIC and wllmc and their superb recipes, AND now I know what the heck an RDA is, I have finally arrived!

It only took a year.

I don't know about the magma in particular, but what they are saying is you don't want to direct air to the side that doesn't have a coil. It just dilutes the flavor and creates little. There should be a way to move the rings around to direct the air to the active side(coil) only. Hope that helps.
Ok, this is helpful to me too - the Magma is the first and only RDA I have & I got it to try out flavors. I've been using single coil with the medium or small airflow holes open on two sides (including the non coil side) just to get a little more airflow. It's working out very well, but you're right that the flavor is more intense when you just use the one underneath the coil.

I retired my Magma, it leaked too much. I also left the middle airflow open on both sides because the draw is too tight otherwise. My favorites right now are my Tobh clone and The Steamboat (a Tugboat ripoff) . Both with plenty of air and easy to remove the topcaps for dripping and no leaks. I really like my older Origin V2 for flavor but don't like the small opening at the top or putting a lot of pressure on my 510 connection to pull off the barrel to drip

If you are shopping on fasttech, I have one of these I use to test flavours. It's a Magma clone - costs $15.79. Drippers are usually made for flavour or big clouds, this one excels at flavour. You can build 1 or 2 coils - it works perfectly either way. You put the coil wires through the holes in the posts so there are no finicky little screws to wrap around. Very easy to build and use. I use a 1.3 ohm 2mm 28 gauge coil at 11 watts with the smallest airflow hole. You only need huge amounts of power if you open up the airflow to blow clouds.

https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10008103/1718100-magma-styled-rebuildable-dripping-atomizer

Fasttech also has the coiling tools which will be a life saver if you are just starting to build - $6.16.
https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10012175/2066300-kuro-koiler-wire-coiling-tool-3-piece-set
I picked one of these Magma's up from Angelcigs it was on sale for 8 I think they get a about 10 dollars for it regularly I love the flavor out of this RDA. AngelCigs got it to me in three days. I usually build about a 0.7 dual coil setup and vape aroudn 22 to 27 watts

I've been looking at videos for it, and that does seem to be a problem (leaking)...and people are doing all kinds of crazy things with drills and toothpicks and nose rings and ..... sheesh! I'm not a datgum welding expert ... time to rethink the magma.

I am having good luck wiith mine. Leaks a lot less then my orchid v4 tank. I do use a dual coil setup shooting for about 0.7 with 26g wire and be sure not to overdrip. I do about 6 to 10 drops when I need more and get several draws off of it. I leak the most when I tip the thing to far to the side or lay it on my lap or something like that.

Take a look at the Venturi. It is a dripping atomizer that has a chimney inside. Phenomenal Flavor. I use mine with a single coil. for tasting and casual dripping. There are videos on YouTube. Has a very deep juice well so less dripping. You can also use it as a cloud chaser with the included top cap. You actually get three caps. It does not leak in the flavor mode. Period. I haven't used it in any other way. I paid $14 for mine at I think Vapor Beast. Postage included.

Take a look at the Tobh V2 it's cheaper than the Magma. I'm running mine right now at 12 watts with a 1.4 ohm single coil and good flavor and vapor.
https://www.fasttech.com/p/1756801
One minor niggle is the base has a couple tabs that stick up to be used as airflow control but they sit right in front of the coil so I have mine with two of the six airflow holes blocked but the open ones offset slightly. I don't consider it a big deal.

There's the Magma 2 (I think some places call it Vengeance). Maybe they fixed the leaking thing with that. Haven't heard much about it though. There's also the Nomad, if you're more into flavor than clouds, but it's a vertical build, which gets a little fiddly. And there are two (that I can remember) that are oh so convenient (you don't have to remove the top cap to drip): Mephisto and Geyser.

What I'm wanting now is the Aqua V2. Tank AND dripper, good flavor, and not as fiddly as the Orchid. But I'm broke ATM so...:D

thanks guys, at least with this credit card business it's making me take time to look at everything and not just start clicking away at the first thing I see :)

caddisfly, I don't see anything that says venturi at vapor beast...? maybe they don't sell it anymore?

thanks for the link JXN - i'll definitely look into it :)

Other places carry it, for like $8-10 (fasttech, angelcigs,...). I was looking at that, can't remember what prompted me to pass on it...

It was in a clearance sale for $8 with $5 shipping. I guess they sold them all. Though there were 40 or so left a couple weeks ago. Sorry. I would still consider it though. Vapor Joes announces their sales whenever they have them. The shipping charge is high but if you buy other things it doesn't change, I believe.

After feasting on all that gear talk perhaps a light brunch is called for tomorrow, before a day perusing the galleries.

Brunch at the Louvre
(Crisp salad with PPP*)

2% FA Grape White
1.25% FA Cucumber
0.5% FA Wine Champagne Mar/2015
0.5% FA Licorice
0.25% FA Bergamot

A crisp vape. First developed by a cadre of monks in the Italian Alps. Now imported by Flavour Arts. It is fairly dry but with a smooth follow thru. This is a good year for Flavours from Italy.

* Pretentiously Presented Pomp.

I'm sure there's an FA conspiracy here. I have over 100 flavours now and still every time you guys post an interesting looking recipe (all of them) I'm always missing one flavour. Order time again as soon as MamaJ's figures out Canadian shipping (Please, please add TFA Cheesecake Graham Crust).

Regarding the Magma and Aqua V2. Yes the Magma will leak through the air holes if you tilt it too much. Also, keep the wick away from the deck or it will leak there too. This last is true for many atomizers including the Aqua 2... The Aqua 2 is easy to coil - it also has post holes for the wires instead of wrapping around screws. It is more difficult to wick than say a Kayfun as the wick has to be tapered into the juice channels much like an ErlK. Makes great flavour and clouds if that's where you want to go. Running single coil requires you to plug the unused juice channels. You can use it as an RBA or a dripper, single or double coil. I got mine on Fasttech. Yes, I do have shinyitis.

Drills and toothpicks are common things used on any RBA or RDA to hold the coil while you are securing it. Nose rings however is a new one to me.

Fasttech has a Venturi clone for $12.09 - https://www.fasttech.com/products/0...turi-styled-rda-rebuildable-dripping-atomizer

After reading all this chat my Magma seems inadequate and I think I want a Venturi or a Mephisto, maybe. I want something that will be

1) good flavor
2) not too leaky
3) easy to use and
4) (ideally) more than 20 drops juice capacity

On the angelcigs site the Venturi is described as "kayfun styled". But it's an RDA not an RBA or RTA--or whatever you call the ones that are rebuildable tanks? Kayfuns seem so complicated, never having used one. Does the "kayfun styling" of the Venturi mean that it is more like a tank? Do you think if I can use the Magma will I be able to use this without much of a leap?

ouzel, the Venturi at angelcigs will ship faster and it does appear to be in stock for 8 dollars (plus unknown shipping $).

http://www.angelcigs.com/venturi-kayfun-styled-rda-rebuildable-atomizer-1-1.html

thank you :) I was planning on getting at least one rda from somewhere other than fasttech so I wouldn't have to wait ages for it....
I was hopefully going to order one from where I get the istick....I'm willing to get rdas from fasttech but for some reason I'm scared of getting a battery from there.....rdas don't blow up
It might be all in my head and is perfectly safe.
Still.
I don't want stuff to blow up near my head if I can help it. :)

Oh and from what I saw in the videos of the Venturi...it's an RDA, just like the others except it has a little chimney-like thing over the coils but everything else seems to be the same as all other RDAs....except you control the air holes with your drip tip.

Oh no you don't!!! :D
Believe me, I was doing that when looking at them "hmmmm, the 50 is not much more expensive....." but it's bigger and I like small cute stuff :D plus my 1600mah battery lasts me over 2 days...I don't vape as much as a lot of people do so 2200mah should last well into 3 days i think.
I plan on going single coil, so less battery usage and I won't be trying to cloud up the place so....I'm gonna stick with the cute 30

but no pink.

I like cute but silver/black cute. :D

The 50w has a red that is actually more "pinkish" FYI.

And lots of fancy wraps on ebay for them...

Ahh...Shinyitis. Wonderful disease. But that is not my problem. My problem is that I live at an elevation of 235' and work at an elevation of 2500'. I take a bus to work and can't vape my way up the ridge to relieve the pressure. I've tried many tanks.

The Orchid V2: This tank worked really well for the first month, no leaks, so I bought another one. Well, they both eventually began leaking and now leak without the pressure change. So I cleaned them up and put them away to deal with another day.

The Orchid V4: Same problem as with the V2, but smaller quantities of juice leaking.

The Kayfun Lite Plus V2 Authentic: Very little leakage on trip up the hill, but the airflow is so restricted it is no fun to vape.

The Aqua 2: Very little leakage once you learn how to wick it. Good airflow and excellent flavor. This device has become a dedicated to a single juice that has been an everyday vape from the time I tasted it. The only drawback is that you have to use a syringe to fill it. I use the plastic tank that has the capacity to not need filling while out and about.

The Atlantis, The Subtank, and the Billow, These three tanks also can't handle the elevation change. While they leak, it is not in tank draining amounts.

So I've settled on the Aqua, The Atlantis, The Subtank, and the Billow to take out and up to work. I put them in plastic bags for the ride. All give an excellent vape. There are new tanks out there I haven't tried, but I'm hoping I don't have to replace any of these four in the near future.

These are just my experiences with tanks and may not apply to you.

Oh, and not having a flavor to complete a recipe is a proud tradition in DIYland. It gives up an excuse to place an order.

I'm editing this because I forgot about one more tank I have. It's a Tobeco produced KayFun V4 clone. This one works as well as the 4 I use everyday and I would carry it up to work more if only the tank weren't so small. For such a heavy device, you would think it would hold more juice. But it doesn't. The learning curve is a bit steep for this device as well. I usually leave it at home.

Kayfun styled means it uses a chimney inside of the top cap. This concentrates the flavor. When I am testing juices, I often don't use the top cap of the Venturi at all. I just put a drip tip on the chimney and vape away. It looks funny but makes it easy to drip and change wicks. The chimney top easily lifts off to provide access. Of course, without the top cap, you can't lay it on its side and expect it to not leak

Ok so I'm a traditionalist now.. feel better already. I have a similar type of problem with tanks but in Montreal it's winter temperature not altitude. At -20F, not much will vape properly. Vaping outside is a really fast way to burn your wick. This year we've also had 30 degree temperature swings day to day so it's even harder to adapt. The Aqua V2 has also been the best performer for outdoors.

On another note, when tasting juice recipes do you always re-wick between flavours? If so how do you deal with the taste of new cotton? I'm using Shiseido japanese cotton pads and it has a distinctive taste and muted juice flavour until it breaks in. HIC's Irish Lass for example has almost no flavour at first. If I relied on those first 20 pulls or so I would be way over-flavouring. Should I be using a different wicking material in my tasting atty and if so what?

I hadn't thought of doing that with a kayfun, but I will now. High five back at ya.
it so fast and taste way better than any other drippers out there. but like you say looks silly as hell because a drip tip will not fit on it. I guess you could modify one with a piece of rubber tube or someting but I just put the chimney and balance that top cap with the drip tip on it and fire it up. if its good I build the rest of the tank and fill it with juice , if not I can re wick it in 15 seconds

No one should have to deal with any temp below freezing. Period. I'm California bred and grown. I wouldn't have a clue as to how to survive if it ever dropped below 0 degrees F. BTW it is expected to be 85 degrees here in N. Calif. today.

About half the time I rewick for a new flavor. It just depends on the strength of the existing and future juice. For a light, delicate flavor like the salad recipe above, I changed wicks with each testing. To get rid of the cotton taste, I burn off about twenty drops worth before I start inhaling.

I use organic cotton balls because they are cheap and I am used to them. Use whatever cotton you are comfortable with. There is no right or wrong here.

That is where the Venturi excels. The drip tip is designed to fit the chimney. The top cap just slips over it. Yeah, fast change.
