TAKE ACTION

Bees Hurt By Government Cuts

Things aren’t looking good for pollinators. Honey bee colonies are suffering record-breaking losses.

There were a few years of hope at the state level, with 11 states taking action on the cause of Colony Collapse Disorder, Bayer’s neonicotinoid insecticides. But, this year, only one new bill passed. LD 1323, in Maine, started out as a bill to ban Bayer’s neonic-soaked GMO seeds, as New York and Vermont have done, but it ended up just requiring a study of the issue.

At the federal level, things are even worse. The Saving America's Pollinators Act to ban neonics nationwide hasn’t been reintroduced yet, and proposed budget cuts threaten to eliminate a scientific research institute that studies pollinators.

The target is the Department of the Interior and its enforcement of the Endangered Species Act. This administration doesn’t like the way that impacts drilling, mining, and new construction, so they’ve proposed eliminating the U.S. Geological Services Ecosystem Management Area. That’s where Department of the Interior scientists study industry’s impacts on endangered species, and it includes the government’s only research group charged with identifying native bees, the USGS Bee Lab at the Eastern Ecological Science Center in Laurel, Maryland.

TAKE ACTION:

Tell Your State Legislators To Ban Neonic-Treated Seeds!

Tell Congress to save the Bee Lab and pass the Saving America’s Pollinators Act!

POLLINATOR WEEK

Take Care of Your Local Landscapes With Pollinators in Mind

Beyond Pesticides:

“Eliminating hazardous pesticide use along with the planting of forage and habitat areas with native vegetation are the best options for conserving pollinators. See recommendations for your home and garden.

Backyard trees, gardens and beekeeping are great ways to support biodiversity and pollinators. Intentionally providing water, food and forage to pollinators will encourage and boost pollinator populations in your community.

What to do…

– Plant colorful, bee-attractive flowering plants. Don’t have a garden? Balcony and window plants are also great ways to support pollinators.

– Encourage birds with bird baths and seed.

Plant an organic garden.

PESTICIDES

New Study Adds to Evidence That Glyphosate Weed Killer Can Cause Cancer

Carey Gillam reports for The New Lede:

“A new long-term animal study of the widely used weed killer glyphosate find fresh evidence that the herbicide, introduced by Monsanto in the 1970s, causes multiple types of cancer, and may do so at doses considered safe by regulators.

The results of the two-year study, which were published June 10 in the journal Environmental Health, add to an ongoing global debate over the safety of the pesticide, which is commonly used by farmers to kill weeds in fields and pastures. The chemical is also used widely to manage weeds on golf courses, in parks and playgrounds, and in forestry management.

‘Our study provides solid and independent scientific evidence of the carcinogenicity of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides,’ said Daniele Mandrioli, director of the Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the Ramazzini Institute in Italy. Mandrioli is the principal investigator for the study.”

Read about how the researchers said the study results indicate the glyphosate herbicides can cause a range of cancers, including leukemia

SUPPORT OCA & RI

Help Change Our Food System

Pollinators are the unsung heroes of our food system, playing a vital role in putting food on our tables. Without them, many of our favorite fruits, vegetables, and nuts would disappear.

But toxic pesticides, like Roundup, pose a significant threat to these crucial creatures, and to our health. The Deadly Legacy of Roundup new research has shed light on and confirms the alarming connections between Roundup and cancer. The evidence is clear: exposure to this toxic chemical can have devastating health consequences.

It’s time to take action and demand a safer, healthier food system.

Please consider making a donation today to help us with this crucial work.

By supporting OCA, you’ll be helping to advocate for policies that protect pollinators and promote pollutant free agriculture, raise awareness about the dangers of toxic pesticides like Roundup, and support organic farmers and regenerative food systems.

Tour of my backyard mini farm

even in this temporary situation, I am growing food

Some adorable video of the ducks, cats, and rabbits reproducing? Ok, that last one may not be that cute.
I’m in a temporary rental and I didn’t want to get a much of food production going here. Partly because I keep thinking this is temporary, and partly because when I’ve set up food systems up in other rentals the owners completely destroyed my work after I left. (Sigh) The level of common insanity is astonishing to me.
But with times being the way they are, I know I absolutely have to get some basic livestock and food going. This is an example of the basic backyard food production system that I teach and recommend.
So this is a quick tour of my yard. When I moved in, it was a horrible, fire ant infested bare lot. I didn’t plan on being here for long and was going to leave it that way. But the pressure so the world events, and my love of growing and nurturing life, well, I’m working this small bit of land and so happy about it.
Hopefully it will inspire you to get started!

You CAN take control of your life, your health, and your happiness... It starts with homegrown, nutrient-dense food!

How can you tell how fresh and healthy grocery store produce actually is?

All fruits and vegetables start losing precious nutrients as soon as they’re picked! And for some crops, you can be eating them weeks or even months later.

For example, did you know that most grocery store carrots are 1 to 9 months old depending on when you buy them?

Cold storage does help fresh vegetables last longer. But chemical coatings, gasses, waxes, and soy-based proteins are also used to keep produce from spoiling on the long trip from the farm to your table.

And they aren’t very good for your immune system either.

The true solution to better health and better food is right in your backyard… It's gardening!

A Groundbreaking new study links glyphosate to more than 10 cancers, but now Congress wants to bail out Bayer and the pesticide industry with its new spending bill.

Last week a major new study came out from one of the world’s leading cancer research facilities that once again confirmed a strong link between Monsanto’s glyphosate and cancer at the same time House and Senate Republicans were working behind the scenes in DC to launch a massive subsidy increase to the 6 most pesticide intensive crops.

How many times have you heard the word “superfood”?

But what really makes a food “super”? Does it come with a cape when you pluck it from your garden? 😄

Here’s the scoop—according to Harvard’s School of Public Health:
    mail
“There’s no scientifically based or regulated definition for superfood, but generally, a food is promoted to superfood status when it offers high levels of desirable nutrients, is linked to the prevention of a disease, or is believed to offer several simultaneous health benefits beyond its nutritional value.”
In short: superfoods = powerful nutrition + next-level health benefits.

    And the best part?

You don’t need to travel to the Amazon jungle to get them. You can grow many of them right in your own backyard.

That’s why we’re thrilled to share this with you:

Your grocery store produce might be older than you think. Most carrots? They could be up to 9 months old before they reach your table.
That's disturbing. By then, many nutrients are long gone—and you're left with expensive, tasteless veggies coated in wax or gas-preserved.
Want truly fresh food that fuels your health? Start in your backyard (or balcony or windowsill)!

I canned half of my carrots last night the rest will get juiced but here's what I got

P1500348.JPG

I canned the purple carrots in with the orange and the yellow ones and it's hard to see here but the purple carrots bled. Before they were canned it was real noticeable but has seemed topenatrate back into the others Here's a closer shot

P1500350.JPG

Cannin is becomin a lost art, I guess cause it is work but you get good clean food that you can count on not havin any poisons sprayed on or chemical fertilizers, honest clean food

What actually defines a superfood? Most people agree these foods pack a nutrient punch.
And it’s those nutrients that boost your immunity and increase your longevity, right?
But here’s something to consider:
Once a blueberry is picked, it starts losing precious nutrients… it dies a little bit each day.
So if you buy blueberries harvested weeks ago, transported across the country, then sat on grocery shelves for days… do they still have all those precious nutrients that are supposed to make them “super?”
Sure, they are still healthy, but they could be so much more full of life and vitality!
Because let’s face it… all those nutrients that are being lost each day on grocery shelves are the exact answers to some of the most serious illnesses that humanity now faces… cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, diabetes… and even Alzheimer’s.
So imagine growing blueberries right at home in a container on your balcony or in your yard… Imagine how much MORE full of energy those fresh-picked berries could be.
And how much more fun it would be knowing you grew them yourself!
That’s exactly why our good friends at Grow Your Own Vegetables are hosting the Superfood Garden Summit so that health-conscious people like you can get MORE from a lifestyle of fresh food.
