I harvested a bunch of peppers today and a few tomatoes.

This is the tomatoes and the low spice peppers.

I got a bunch of Serrano. and Jalapeno peppers. I had to do side shots to see the Cayenne, Tabasco, and the Habanero chilies.

I had harvested some oregano and thyme a few days ago and put them in my dehydrator. My hands smell good!

Here's the oregano

Here's the thyme

We all do things the way we think best, but when I was growing bunches of different kinds of herbs I just cut bunches of branches/stems, spread them out on wax paper on the dining room table and let them dry at room temp, then shoved the whole dried branches into jars. Also made tons of baggies full for friends. I did that with thyme, oregano, rosemary, basil, lavender, lemon verbena, peppermint, spearmint, sage, summer savory, and whatever others I'm not calling to mind at the moment.

The herbs stay more succulent when dried on their stems.

That delicious dehydrator smell Jimi mentioned is flavor escaping.

Just my little opinion.

I know. You can say it.

I was drying them still on the stems in my dehydrator set @95 degrees. My fingers were smelling good after removing the leaves when dry. I have cats, one doesn't leave stuff on the table that they would find interesting smell wise with cats around... :)

In my part of the world, we are moving towards winter right now.

If you're also in the Northern Hemisphere, remember that winter doesn't have to mean you stop growing!

I LOVE this technique I learned from Peter Burke several years ago - “indoor salad gardening.” This trick enables you to grow sprouts year round!

Sent. I love tasty steaks, tritips, briskets, roasts, and ribs. I would definitely love to get beef raised in the USA. Same with pork and chicken.

I'm hearing that country of original labeling (COOL) is out the window now. You buy something, you have no idea where it came from, unless you buy from your local farmer or rancher. I could be wrong. I hear things on podcasts I trust, then can't find any updates by searching. The giant Wall Street food producers/processors have always wanted COOL gone.

A long time ago I read that cattle imported to the US from latin America, up through the Mexico border, have to swim through a tank of pesticide before stepping on US soil.

I posted that action link here because ranching and farming are gardening. Using your land to grow food is always gardening, IMO. @Jimi can always call me out if he thinks something I post doesn't belong here.

For the last week, we’ve been diving into crop planning tips—and we wanted to give you one more simple tweak you can do right away that can dramatically increase your harvest abundance.

Most gardeners focus on what to plant… but the biggest gains often come from where and when you plant. And there’s one thing almost everyone overlooks…

Imagine looking at your garden and realizing every inch is working for you… not sitting empty, not going to waste, but actively producing food week after week.

Now imagine this:

A tiny 6-inch gap, so small it barely catches your attention, quietly costing you harvest after harvest. One little empty pocket of soil that, over a whole season, could have produced fresh greens, herbs, roots… even multiple successions of crops.

Most gardeners never see it happening.

Not because they’re doing anything “wrong,” but because these empty spaces hide in plain sight.

But imagine being able to spot them before they ever appear.

That’s the power of mapping out your growing season ahead of time. Suddenly, those “mystery gaps” become opportunities—extra food, extra value, extra abundance you didn’t even know you had room for.

If the question “Why is there so much open soil?” has ever crossed your mind, this lesson is going to be eye-opening.

>>> Watch: What 6” of Empty Growing Space Really Costs You
(You may be surprised by how much food slips through the cracks.)

Inside the video, you’ll see how:

🌱 One tiny gap can equal major lost harvests
🌱 Smart succession timing transforms a single spot into multiple crops
🌱 A simple planning habit keeps your garden productive all season long

Your 2026 harvest starts with the choices you make today. 🌱

Dr. Small to Newsmax: Planning, Mental Stimulation Essential for Healthy Retirement

By Sandy Fitzgerald

As Americans retire earlier and live longer, isolation, financial stress, and cognitive decline are growing challenges, but retirement can also be rewarding, according to Dr. Gary Small, the director of Behavioral Health Breakthrough Therapies at Hackensack Meridian Health, said on Newsmax.

"It's not all doom and gloom," Small told Newsmax's "National Report." "We do have more time to play and time with friends, and that's important."

Editor’s Note: Doctor: How to Build a Smarter Brain — No Prescription, Just Proven Science

He encourages seniors to "nurture those relationships," plan ahead financially, engage their minds, travel, and prioritize physical exercise, which he called "one of the best ways you can maintain your physical and mental health."

Retirement in the United States begins at an average age of 62, with life expectancy reaching 78, which gives most Americans more than a decade to enjoy family, friends, and long-delayed personal interests.

But despite these promising opportunities, experts say retirees often encounter obstacles they didn’t anticipate.

Special: Worried About Forgetting Things? Try Dr. Blaylock's Brain Boosters.

Small said that many of the struggles seniors face stem from abrupt changes in daily routine and mental engagement.

"A huge challenge a lot of people don't anticipate is social isolation," he explained. "A lot of us are very connected at work. We have a big social network, and that goes away."

Without those connections, he warned, "there's risk of loneliness. It increases your risk for depression, and certainly, retirees face those challenges."

Editor’s Note: Unlock Extra Social Security Income (Free Report Inside!) Don’t Miss Out!

Purpose is another factor that can fade quickly, the doctor said.

"A lot of people define who they are by their work life," he said. "So many even have an identity crisis."

Financial stress adds another layer of difficulty. Retirees shift from income to savings, and Small noted that unexpected financial burdens often catch people off guard.

"Health care crises come up," he said. "The price of gas, groceries — all these things may come into play and you're not prepared for them."

Cognitive decline is also a major concern.

"People who retire have a 40% increase in cognitive decline," Small said, calling it the result of isolation, reduced stimulation, and age.

"Loss of purpose and meaning, social isolation where you don't have the conversations, stimulating your mind," all contribute to the problem, he added.

If problems arise, Small advised immediate action: "If you're feeling depressed or you feel that you're slipping cognitively, don't be afraid to get help because help is out there."

About 4 weeks ago we had frost warnings so we picked 2 big boxes of green maters and put them in our basement, some were yellow some white and some all green. (we do this every year) Over the weeks we have have had maters every day. Here's some that came upstairs this week.

P1510130.JPG

This helps extend your season and your harvest,
BUT, they don't quite taste AS good as in season ones but they sure DO taste a whole lot better than store bought tasteless ones.
A lot of gardeners give away their green mater if anyone asks, we gave 4 boxes away to neighbors/family/ and anyone who wants them.

Have you ever had a moment in your garden that didn’t quite feel… ordinary?

A moment of sudden clarity while watering.
A feeling of comfort while pruning.
A nudge of intuition that seemed to come out of nowhere.

Most gardeners brush these moments off.

But what if they’re not random?
What if they’re messages?
What if your garden has been guiding you all along?

If you’ve ever felt even a spark of that knowing, we’d love to invite you to a brand-new masterclass where we’ll explore the deeper magic of growing:

ANCESTRAL TRADITIONS

Harvest Reflections: Truth, Gratitude & Land

This harvest season invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the land and all who sustain us. Across cultures, from Haudenosaunee harvest traditions to Samhain, Sukkot, and the Mid-Autumn Festival, autumn has long been a time for gratitude and preparation. In North America, this time also requires honesty: while some gather in warmth and celebration, others mark the National Day of Mourning, acknowledging the ongoing impacts of colonization, land theft, broken agreements, and systemic erasure.

Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass and the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address offer a different way forward, one rooted in reciprocity, relationship, and giving thanks to the natural world. Monique Gray Smith reminds us that teachings of gratitude and care exist in every lineage, and that reconnecting with our own ancestral traditions can deepen responsibility and healing. Gratitude, she says, changes our frequency toward kindness, generosity, and respect.

Kimmerer also challenges the pressures of holiday consumerism, calling contentment “a radical proposition” in a society built on scarcity. Gratitude, she writes, is good medicine for land and people alike. This season, we’re invited to put those teachings into practice: learn the Indigenous history of the land you live on, honor truth, and choose economic actions that reflect reciprocity – by supporting small businesses, Indigenous makers, ethical producers, and regenerative farmers.
