You know, I grew up less than 5 minutes from Jackson square and the French quarter and it utterly pisses me off!
I went to the cabildo and the museum's pretty often as a kid. I'm glad I went back to down their shortly before I moved and took my fiance. Thankfully she got to see it all before it became robbed of it's history. The history can certainly be argued to be not pleasant. However, to remove the reminders and leave generations to come without seeing it is beyond stupid! I doubt you'll find a single person living who would say they are proud of everything that has happened in our country's history. But it happened. Not to mention, Jackson and Lee may have done some bastard things, but to forget their accomplishments and remove a major part of the identity of an entire city is beyond Stoopid.

It has nothing to do with hatred.
Look at the pic in my last post.
That's Jackson square, a site with concerts, weddings, picnics allamor of get togethers.
Removing that monument removes a huge part of the identity of that place.
I spent a lot of time there as a child watching bands and having parties- so many memories.
History sucks, but it happened. Did these people do some shitty things-yes
But that doesn't deny the character or the history that it gave to an entire region. All of our nation's forefathers were bastards in some ways. We shouldn't forget that one of them wrote the Constitution and another led our militias to conquer the largest military in the world at the time.
History should be remembered. To remove history is to forget history. To forget history is to repeat it.
