Blood Sugar/Brain Axis:
How To Improve Your Brain/Body Balance And
Improve Your Health While You’re At It!​
This axis is multi-faceted in the sense that there’s so much to potentially consider, all of which can be contributing to high levels of blood sugar and insulin. Insulin resistance is actually a protective mechanism usually due to too much oxidative stress inside a cell, so it doesn’t make sense to ‘burn’ more fuel and make more oxidative stress.

Right out the gate it is important to discuss the effects of tasting sweetness. Zero calorie sweeteners are all the rage, but even if they are healthy it can still affect how the brain will try to regulate blood sugar. Once the tongue senses sweet, it sends information to the brain about what kind and how much food is being eating.

The brain responds in kind to start talking to organs like the liver, thyroid, gut lining, and pancreas to start the stabilizing process. The problem is there aren’t any calories involved so all these organs are responding to sugars that aren’t present and once hormones like insulin are secreted and the liver gets ready.

Blood sugar balance has to be restored since without calories being present, now blood sugar is dropping. Think of blood sugar like a pendulum, but the less it swings the better because the brain likes it to be stable. An area of the brain that deals with emotions like fear, anger, and anxiety have been shown to increase the risk of diabetes regardless of body fat levels.

It is important to remember that high levels of insulin and blood sugar will not only damage the brain but degrade the protective barrier around the brain called the blood-brain barrier. This can be a huge problem because this barrier is meant to only allow certain molecules to be directly available to the brain and when this barrier is broken, it can contribute to brain dysfunction happening even faster. Diseases like Alzheimer’s are often called "type 3 diabetes."

Insulin is responsible for making things grow and divide faster. It is often associated with increase body fat percentage. Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t just a storage form of energy, but is actually metabolically active and can release pro-inflammatory signals that will cause the brain to become even more inflamed and work even less. Fatigue, depression, anxiety, poor memory, and brain fog are just a few examples of what a person might be more likely to experience.

There is another hormone called leptin that can be involved as well. This is kind of the gas gauge and tells you when you need to go to a gas station and fill up your car. If this gauge is broken, a person can’t sense if their tank is empty or full. They might not get hungry and "forget to eat" or they can also not register they ate, so they keep eating and eating. This can contribute to depression and dementia as well.

Another nail in the brain coffin related to being overweight and brain health is that it can directly contribute to the severity of an autoimmune disease. For the wrong person, this can be extremely important since the brain has a lot of potential targets for the immune system to start attacking. Couple this with a leaky blood brain barrier and this can allow certain cells of the immune system to have access to the brain and potentially start destroying different components that they normally wouldn’t have access too.​

Smell Is Sometimes A Window Into If There Is A Process Like Alzheimer’s Or Parkinson’s Happening
For Alzheimer's, there is a test called the "peanut butter smell test" which is exactly what it sounds like.

To do this a person will close their left nostril and hold a jar of peanut butter about 2 feet under their nose and keep getting it closer and closer until you smell the peanut butter.

Then repeat it, but now close your right nostril and try and smell it through your left nostril. The closer a person has to get the jar of peanut butter to smell out of their left nostril and the bigger the difference between the left and right nostril is more indicative that a person is starting to go down the Alzheimer's road.
For Parkinson's Disease, it is usually about whether a person can identify smells like peppermint or anise. These are some of the easiest tests to perform in-home as well as is surprisingly accurate when these two tests are taken into context with other findings.​

Beware of Strokes From Dirty Needles

As abuse of injected ****** and other addictive opioids spreads throughout the United States, heart experts warn of a growing threat: strokes caused by infections contracted through dirty needles.

"People need to be more aware that stroke can be a devastating complication of injecting opioids," said Dr. Setareh Salehi Omran, the lead author of a study that appeared in the journal Stroke.

As the researchers explained, injecting ****** or other opioids can enable bacteria to get into the body. These germs then travel via the bloodstream to infect and inflame heart valves — a dangerous condition called infective endocarditis.

Looking at U.S. data on hospitalizations between 1993 and 2015, the researchers identified nearly 5,300 patients hospitalized with stroke from opioid-related infective endocarditis.

These cases have risen steadily: from 2.4 per 10 million people in 1993 to 18.8 per 10 million people in 2015, the findings showed.

Once infective endocarditis occurs, clumps of infected tissue can break off and travel to the brain's blood vessels and block them, triggering stroke. These types of stroke have become more common in recent years, with the largest increase among whites in the northeastern and southern United States.

Obesity-Linked Cancers On the Rise

As more young American adults struggle with extra weight, they are paying an even steeper price as the rates of obesity-related cancers rise in this age group.

Obesity has already been linked to rising rates of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and knee replacements. Now research suggests cancer can be added to that list, and the rate of obesity-related cancers is certain to keep climbing among those aged 25 to 49, researchers report.

"The fact that increases were mostly in obesity-related cancers is due to the obesity epidemic, and we would expect that the incidence would increase as this younger population ages," said lead researcher Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, scientific vice president for surveillance and health services research at the American Cancer Society.

The researchers analyzed data from 25 state cancer registries that cover 67% of the U.S. population. The investigators looked at 30 of the most common cancer types diagnosed from 1995 through 2014, including 12 obesity-related cancers.

Incidence of multiple myeloma and cancers of the colon, uterus, gallbladder, kidney, pancreas, and thyroid increased in younger adults, the findings showed.

However, although the rates are increasing faster among young adults, the overall rate is lower than among older adults, according to the report.

A strawberry-banana smoothie from McDonalds has as much sugar in one 12-ounce serving as a donut.

When I was training in the martial arts, I once asked my instructor about several scenarios before a tournament.



“What if he throws a kick?”



“...if he tries to grapple to the ground?”



“What if he closes in tight?”



So many things to worry about.



What was my teacher's advice?



Don’t anticipate.



Be Ready.




Wise words from a wise man. I dropped my breath, relaxed my mind, and was ready for whatever came my way. I won the tournament.



This wisdom has stuck with me throughout the years and is incredibly relevant in our current climate.



The Coronavirus is still here and will likely surge again this fall...around the same time flu season gets going. We’re going into an election in the US with bitterness and misinformation flying from all directions. It’s stressful and now the kids have to go back to school. Oh boy...

INTUITION
My intuition and I have become good friends over the last three years. It had made it’s presence known in the past, but very quietly, and I didn’t really know what to do with it or even if I was just imagining it. But I did enjoy identifying as someone who was intuitive; it seemed magical and special.

It wasn’t until cancer though that we really got to know each other. And again, it was a quiet, slow process. If you’ve gone through cancer yourself, you’ll know the feeling of the chaotic, swirling, confusing, frustrating, helpless, desperate situation; it’s impossible to make decisions from that place, especially ones that are so important and have so many considerations and components and potential consequences to think about in order to make them.

I started to meditate to deal with this tornado of emotions and challenges, and that’s when my intuition started to say “hi” a little more loudly and purposefully. Through meditation, it became impossible to ignore that I was connecting to something bigger than me, what I call The Universe but what you might call God or The Powers That Be or anything else that feels right to you.

Our intuition is our connection to this universal energy, our door into the Soul of the World as Paulo Coelho puts it in The Alchemist; that something bigger that knows better than us what’s coming and why. And that connection is what you can tap into to help you through your cancer experience.

I relied on my intuition in so many ways and at so many times. I informed my gut with every fact, statistic, and opinion I could get my hands on, and then I relied on it to help me make my decisions about treatments, which were the toughest decisions for me. I listened to what it told me about why I was going through this now, which helped me immensely to let go of the anger and bitterness that can come with a cancer diagnosis. I ask for its advice all the time about what to share, what to write about, and how to best help. And it has been a gift that I have been able to take with me into my life after cancer; now that we’re buddies, I know that I can always call on and rely on my intuition to guide me through whatever challenges and adventures I have waiting for me.

Bookending Monday's vlog, just a little reminder today to always listen to and trust your intuition.
You may prefer to call it your heart, your inner voice, your soul, your gut, but they are one and the same. I'm learning as I go along in this life that more and more in this world is one and the same, it was all written by the same hand, so to speak, and if we could remember that more often there would be a lot more peace. When you are connecting with your inner voice, with your heart, with your intuition, you are connecting with the Universe and letting it help to guide you.
I find something really comforting in that, especially in the chaos of cancer where so much seems random and uncontrollable and helpless. If you can start to reach your hand out towards your inner self, you will never be truly alone, not in your decisions and not in life.
Reach out. Connect. Listen. Trust. Move forward, one step at a time.

Mental Health Monday
This week, I'm talking a bit about intuition.

It might be something entirely new to you, or it might even be something you don't believe in! Either way, it's totally fine :) But for me, my intuition played a huge role in my journey while making treatment decisions, and that relationship and trust that I cultivated has continued to serve me so well moving forward into life after cancer.
