Blood Orange Elderflower Mocktail​

Makes 1 serving
1 bottle Fentimans Wild English Elderflower bottle
1 blood orange juiced
blood orange slices
sprig of rosemary

Blackberry Ginger Mint Mocktail​

Makes 1 serving
3 fresh blackberries (muddle with mint leaves)
4 mint leaves + extra for garnish
1 wedge lime + extra for garnish
1 can Zevia Ginger Ale

Sparkling Raspberry Lime Blended Mocktail​

Blend all ingredients - makes 2 servings
1 can Dasani Sparkling Raspberry Lemonade chilled
1/2 cup frozen unsweetened raspberries fresh can also be used
1/2 cup crushed ice
Juice from one medium lime about
1/8 teaspoon vanilla stevia drops about 20 drops (or use any sweetener to taste)

Sometimes, in trying to help someone feel better, we end up invalidating their feelings.

Statements like "you shouldn't feel that way", or "it could be worse", although well-meaning, can be quite damaging. They deny that person's perspective and make them feel worse.

You can validate a person's emotional experience without necessarily agreeing with it. Try to understand why they feel that way. Just be willing to listen, and withhold your judgment.

Avoid offering unsolicited advice or forcing positivity on them. Create a safe space for the other person to feel their feelings.

URGENT: Vaccines Must Be Voluntary
Dear Jimi,
President Biden delivered a big boost for vaccine mandate opposition on September 9, 2021 when he laid bare his “Covid-19 Action Plan.” The six-pronged attack uses executive agencies, “military health teams,” and his claimed authority to bully all Americans into a medical decision. Far from scaring Americans into submission, Biden’s words propelled people to action—and the most powerful thing you can do is join them! We are here to help and give you the opportunity to use your voice and, collectively, to show our strength in numbers.
The president called for sweeping vaccine mandates for private and federal employees and contractors, teachers and health care workers. Employers with over one hundred workers will face fines of $14,000 each incident if they do not implement a mandate for vaccines and testing. The Administration is increasing spending to promote boosters and tests. It will use the “full legal authority” of the Department of Education to insert itself into the sovereignty of the states’ right to protect its own citizens and school children. It will deploy “Federal Monoclonal Antibody Strike Teams” in partnership with HHS, FEMA, and the Department of Defense.
All of this, despite Biden’s campaign promise on December 4, 2020 that he “wouldn’t demand it be mandatory.” In a press conference on July 23, 2021, when asked about a federal mandate, White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed, “That’s not the role of the federal government.” She reminded Americans, “That’s the role that institutions, private sector entities, and others might take.”
Biden referred to the 80 million unvaccinated Americans as a threat. “That 25% can cause a lot of damage.”
And you know what? He’s right. Our strength is in our numbers.
We are not going to comply. The White House plan is a massive overreach into states’ rights. Health and welfare has never been the role of the federal government, and never will be. Governors across the country immediately mobilized to fight the federal power grab in their states. Biden declared: “I’ll use my power as president to get them out of the way.”
The time to stand is NOW. Join the millions of Americans saying No to Mandatory Vaccines.
The president’s announcement was not surprising; it was just appalling. It is unacceptable that someone in such a position of power has such little regard for human life. There is no science to support a population-wide mandate. A recent SHF article explained how development and approval of the vaccine was rushed and is still experimental. In the face of this, the president was crystal clear: “This is not about freedom or personal choice.”
In the words of the president, “What more is there to wait for? What more do you need to see?”
The time is NOW to tell the president he does not get to operate outside his bounds. He does not have lawmaking power. He does not get to declare away the Constitution of the United States.
Nothing has changed in the White House strategy, but it is now laid bare for all to see.
What has changed is, people are waking up because of the president’s desperate assertions of power over the American people. He is grasping at straws. The “pandemic politics” of the president are completely illegal, illogical, and unethical. American people are mad and waking up.
We still have options. We have the Constitution, exemptions and our voices. We have state governors fighting “to the gates of hell” for our liberties and livelihoods. We have the added energy and growing numbers in the face of this president’s mad grab for power. This may not be the worst of what the White House will attempt. So we must stand now. If we do not, we will have no legs to stand on and no room to complain when things get worse.

Tips to Boost Your Immune System

The immune system helps your body fight off infection, but its response diminishes with age. You can boost your immunity by following these steps:

  • Eat a healthy diet. A wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides necessary vitamins and minerals.
  • Exercise daily. Get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. Muscle-strengthening exercise twice a week affords additional health benefits.
  • Reduce stress. When you’re under stress, your body releases certain hormones, including cortisol. If this goes on too long, it will open the door to damaging chronic inflammation. In addition, stress decreases production of white blood cells, called lymphocytes, that fight off infection. High stress levels can also cause anxiety and depression, which dampen the immune system.
  • Sleep well. Get at least eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep deprivation suppresses the immune system.
  • Take these supplements daily: vitamin C 1,000-2,000 mg; vitamin D 2,000 IU; vitamin E 400 IU; zinc 20 mg; garlic 1 or 2 cloves, or 600-1,200 mg; cimetidine 800-1,200 mg daily in divided doses (known as Tagamet, this heartburn medication has immune-boosting effects).

However, we’re meant to have a wide range of emotions, including the unpleasant ones. Emotions help us to understand ourselves and others better. They inform us about the inner things we care about.

The more you try to push your emotions, the more intense they become. Try to reconsider destructive self-judgments.

Your anger can allow you to address whatever issues that may be under the surface. Practice healthy ways to cope with anger.

STEPPING UP OR STEPPING BACK​

Everyone reacts to a cancer diagnosis differently, and that doesn’t just go for the patient themselves. Those around us can have a myriad of reactions as well, and when those don’t line up with the reaction we expect or would have ourselves, it can be confusing and hard.

Friends, family, and partners alike may step up during a diagnosis, or they may step back, and when it’s a step back, it can leave us reeling. All sorts of questions can run through our minds like, “What’s wrong with me?”, “Don’t they care about me?”, “Why are they distancing from me when I need them most?”, “Doesn’t our relationship mean more to them than this?”. And these questions can be far from simple to answer. The reasons someone takes a step back are just as diverse as the reactions to cancer, but they all have one thing in common: they don’t actually have anything to do with you or your relationship with them.

In a lovely book called The Diamond Cutter, I read something that has changed the way this recovering people pleaser views the reactions, behaviours, and opinions of others. We are all blank slates. No one in this world is inherently bad or unlikeable. That coworker you just can’t get along with and whom you can’t seem to spend more than 30 seconds alone with before you’re wishing for an emergency to call you away? They are someone’s partner, soulmate, best friend, deeply loved child. And if someone loves them, even though you don’t, that means they aren’t inherently unlikeable, and that means your feelings and behaviours towards them have everything to do with you and your internal world and nothing to do with them.

The same goes for those confusing reactions from loved ones who step back after you are diagnosed. You (and your diagnosis for that matter) are neutral. You aren’t inherently unlikeable now that you have cancer, they still care about you even though you have cancer, and your relationship is still meaningful after cancer. It’s just that they have something going on within themselves, some anxiety or trauma or fear, that is triggered by someone they care about going through something like cancer and that is causing them to retreat.

It has everything to do with them, and nothing to do with you.

So, the best thing you can do is to release the fear that they dislike you, the doubt about the importance you hold for them, and the anger that their reaction may be causing in you. Try looking at them with sympathy instead of resentment and forgive them for their reaction, because they are going through something too and living with anger and resentment is only going to make your healing more difficult.

Be patient, focus on yourself and your healing, and surround yourself with the people who do feel able to step up for you right now. With time, those on the bench will hopefully address whatever is holding them back and join you on the playing field. Cancer is a team sport after all :)

Mental Health Monday​

It was a holiday here in Canada, and in many places, this past Monday, so in Solis CC tradition, I took a mental health break and didn't post a new MHM vlog. It was also the tail end of my week off, which was absolutely lovely and reinforced for me the importance of taking time for self care and restoration. I read a lot, snuggled our new kitty, went camping, and...got engaged! It was a truly wonderful week and weekend. I sincerely hope that you were similarly able to find some moments for yourself as well.

Inspiration and Motivation​

Regret and anxiety; two things that cancer patients and survivors know a lot about. When we start learning about the things that could have contributed to our diagnosis, It’s quite common and normal to feel regret that we didn’t know better sooner, when there was still time to prevent it in the first place. We can’t blame ourselves for getting cancer of course, but regret can creep in about the contributing factors we wish we had known to address. And of course anxiety over the future of our health is a constant companion for many. There are good days and bad, some when we feel its presence and some when we don’t, but it’s incredibly hard to completely and permanently shake the feeling that we are a ticking time bomb some days.

All that being said, thanks to cancer, I have also become increasingly aware of the fact that no matter how much I regret not knowing how to better support my health in the past, I can’t change what has already happened, and that no matter how much I worry about the future, I can’t change what is going to happen. What has been, is, and what will be, will be. What I can change is what I do with this moment, today, and how I want to live the rest of my life. I can support my health now, and I can work on being present instead of always dwelling in the what if’s of the future.

So, take a big, deep breath, and try as much as possible to let these feelings go. Breathe them out, and breathe love and joy in. I like to actually visualise them leaving with my breath (usually dark smoke in my mind) and the good stuff entering with my breath (usually luminous vapour, like a cloud). Some days this is super easy, some days this is super hard, but whatever type of day I’m having, just trying always makes me feel even a little better, and that’s a win
