Lessons Cancer Taught Me: Year 4​

In my first year after diagnosis, I started to have realizations about different things I was learning from cancer: ways I was changing, positive growth I was experiencing, and how my perspective on life was shifting. I started writing them down, and it is something that I continue today. Our thinking patterns largely influence the way we experience life. A lot of times, these patterns can be irrational, and negatively influence your perception of reality.

This phenomenon is known as cognitive distortion. Cognitive distortion causes you to reinforce negative thinking or emotions about your life. Examples are catastrophizing, black and white thinking, and overgeneralizing.

Of course, we can't be one hundred percent logical and rational all the time, but we can try to see things for what they really are as often as possible.

Practice noticing the distortion, and then replacing it with a more constructive and helpful thought. When you start thinking in a more balanced way, your sense of well-being improves and you can bounce back faster.

Eat Greens and Carrots to Fight Dementia

Your brain is a powerhouse of neurological functions, keeping your heart beating, your guts moving, your eyelids blinking, and your experiences inventoried. When certain brain functions are disrupted by disease or trauma, you may experience dizziness, seizures, muscle spasms, emotional turmoil, trouble swallowing, or other symptoms.

One of the most common and life-altering brain malfunctions is dementia, a term describing difficulty remembering, thinking, or making decisions. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia. Other forms include:

• Vascular dementia, related to strokes or other issues with blood flow to the brain

• Lewy body dementia, which causes movement or balance problems in addition to memory loss

• Frontotemporal dementia, which causes disturbing changes in personality and behavior

• Mixed dementia, a combination of, say, Alzheimer's and vascular dementia

Because dementia isn't an inevitable result of getting older, you can take action today to prevent it. And there's a lot of science about the effect food choices have on your brain's health.

Two of the best brain protectors are carrots and leafy greens. Carotenoids like lycopene and the vitamins riboflavin (B2) and folate (B9) found in carrots help brain networks work more efficiently and protect cognition as you age, according to a study from the University of Illinois published in the journal NeuroImage.

And a recent study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry found that a combination of substances in carrots and green tea can reverse Alzheimer's-like memory problems in lab mice. They seem to do it by reducing neuroinflammation and keeping amyloid beta from gumming up the brain's circuitry.

Leafy greens deliver super-charged protection. In one five-year study that looked at the benefits of frequently eating spinach, kale, collards, greens, and lettuce, elderly folks who ate at least 1.3 servings daily were 11 years cognitively younger than those who ate the fewest servings.

The researchers concluded that the phylloquinone (vitamin K found in plants), lutein (a carotenoid), and folate in the greens were what protected cognition.

So what's the smart way to put this brain food into your daily diet? Eat two servings of fruit and three of vegetables daily for the healthiest, longest life.

Dr. Mike's research shows that if you extend this by replacing simple carbs (bread, pasta, chips) with vegetables, you'll have even more power to prevent chronic disease and dementia.

Signs & Symptoms of Thyroid Problems in Women​

Thyroid issues are the talk of the town lately. As they should be! Thyroid hormones are extremely important because they impact virtually every cell in the body.

I’m going to break down what you need to know.

Approximately 1 in 8 women will be affected by a thyroid condition at some point in their lives. The risk for women is about 10 times higher than it is for men. Why are thyroid issues so common?

  • Too much estrogen inhibits thyroid function. High blood levels of estrogen signal the liver to increase the production of thyroid-binding globulin (TBG). This is an inhibitor protein that binds to the thyroid hormone, reducing the amount of T3 and T4 available for use by cells.
  • The more stress an organism is under, the more thyroid dysfunction. As we age, we encounter more stressors. The thyroid will go down because the metabolism needs to reserve energy. This is an adaption! When a person is under stress, the thyroid goes down, leading to a slower metabolism. At some point, this interferes with the body's healing processes.
  • The Standard American Diet creates problems for our thyroid and cholesterol. For example areas where soybean consumption is common correspond with higher levels of hypothyroidism. (Another reason to stay away from soybean oil!)
Symptoms of Low Thyroid:

  • When a patient has a low thyroid, they tend to have a magnesium deficiency.
  • Low thyroid does not always mean a patient will be lethargic. Actually, it can be the opposite. A low thyroid state causes us to live on adrenaline and cortisol, which is destructive to our tissues. Too much adrenaline leads to an increase in cortisol production.
  • High cholesterol is an indicator of low thyroid. When a doctor removes a patient’s thyroid glands, cholesterol goes up. Cholesterol usually goes down with thyroid supplementation.
  • Other symptoms include low body temperature, cold hands, and cold feet.

What to do:

  • Test and supplement when needed.
Usually, doctors determine thyroid function based on blood tests. It is important also to look for symptoms of low thyroid function.

When doctors treat hypothyroidism they usually prescribe a synthetic T4 hormone medication. In order to understand why T4 medications are problematic, it is important to remember that the active thyroid hormone is T3 and that T4 is the storage hormone, which is converted to T3 in the tissues, mainly in the liver.

Women and seriously hypothyroid-affected people often have trouble on a pure T4 medication, because they have a less effective liver function and thus less effective conversion of T4 to T3. When T4 is not converted efficiently to T3, it accumulates and the T4 in itself will have anti-thyroid effects, leading to the many symptoms of low thyroid function. Thus as the dose of T4 is increased the symptoms often get worse.

We recommend using a thyroid replacement therapy containing both T4 and T3 in ratios similar to that secreted by the human thyroid gland, although there can be situations where more T3 or even pure T3 treatment is needed. Natural desiccated thyroid contains T4 and T3 in ratios similar to that secreted by the human thyroid gland.

  • Eat well. Protein and saturated fats.
Eat well. Protein and saturated fats are beneficial. "…According to data from a cross-sectional study published in the journal Nutrition, eating meals high in protein and saturated fatty acids often is linked to higher thyroid function. This study found that eating meals with a high glycemic index on a regular basis has a detrimental impact on thyroid function. Simultaneously, ‘healthy foods’ with high protein content and foods high in saturated fatty acids, which are not restricted in today’s diet, were found to have beneficial effects on thyroid function."

  • Consider Thiamine.
Thiamine deficiency among thyroid sufferers is rampant. Thiamine deficiency tends to go hand in hand with individuals with thyroid problems. Thiamine is one of the B vitamins, known as B1. Its main responsibility is to change carbohydrates into energy. Thiamine also helps with the digestion of proteins and fats, as it is necessary for the proper release of hydrochloric acid in our stomachs (which is required for proper protein digestion). Given that most people with Hashimoto’s have low stomach acid or do not release any stomach acid at all, it’s important to have optimal levels of thiamine.

US Facing Doctor Shortage

There are not enough medical students coming up through the ranks in the United States to replace the number of doctors retiring, according to a new report. This doctor shortage will cut across all specialties, and is already leading to limited patient access and physician burnout.

The most recent projections from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) in June 2020 show that the U.S. could see a shortage of between 54,100 and 139,000 primary care and specialty physicians by 2033.

The AAMC noted that demand will continue to increase as supply dwindles, despite Congress recently passing legislation to fund 1,000 new residency positions.

There are some things you can do to deal with the impending shortage and continue to get the care you need:

  • If you need to find a new doctor, don’t wait until you get sick. Find one immediately. Asking a trusted friend for a recommendation is still the best method.
  • If your insurance company forces you to change doctors, ask your doctor if another physician within the same practice takes your insurance, or if he or she can give a referral.
  • Choose a doctor from a large academic medical center where there is still a large pool of staff to provide your doctor’s office with support.

In this week’s From the Heart segment, Dr. Paul Thomas draws attention to the FDA’s approval of mRNA therapies for children between 5 and 11 years of age.
