What Is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when there is a sudden interruption of blood supply to the brain, depriving the cells of the nutrients and oxygen they need. This can eventually kill them.

There are two types: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke, which is the most common type (87% of all cases), occurs when a clot blocks a blood vessel, stopping the flow.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when there is a tear in the artery wall that leads to bleeding into or around the brain tissue. This type of stroke is less common, but more deadly.

In recent years, the stroke rate has declined. It’s no longer the third-largest killer in the U.S.; it has slipped to fifth place, according to the American Stroke Association. But that doesn’t mean you should be complacent.

Each year, about 795,000 people suffer a stroke, and most of them (610,000) are first-time victims, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of that number, 137,000 people die from stroke each year.

But it isn’t just the risk of death that makes strokes so dreaded. There is also the possibility that you can end up with permanent brain damage, including paralysis, memory loss, difficulty speaking, and other neurological problems.

It’s critical to be aware of the risk factors as well as warning signs and symptoms of stroke, and knowing what to do following a stroke improves the chances of survival if emergency treatment begins quickly.

stand up to C*ncer…

Why Does C*ncer Love Sugar?

The short answer is that c*ncer cells feed on sugar. Yes, c*ncer cells need fuel too, and the substance they feed on most and best is glucose.

Keep in mind, your body converts MANY things into glucose, so it's not just about eating sugary things.

However, there are many forms of sugar in the foods we commonly eat, so this is important information if you're trying to prevent these cells growing.

Dr. Otto Warburg was the first to discover the metabolic characteristics of c*ncer over 100 years ago. Research during the 1990s found that c*ncer cells contain exponentially more insulin receptor sites than healthy cells do.

Now new evidence suggests that sugar may encourage c*ncer tumor cells to grow directly. (1)

Here is more proof of the connection between sugar and c*ncer:

  • Before a person diagnosed with c*ncer gets a PET (Positron Emission Tomogra-phy) scan, the patient is usually given an injection of sugar. As c*ncer cells rush to the sugar molecules, the doctor can determine how much c*ncer is there. (that one is freaky!!)

  • Glucose is used as a “bait” in certain c*ncer therapies such as IPT (Insulin Potentiated Therapy).

  • Sugar affects a protein called MondoA, which is responsible for turning genes on and off, according to researchers at the Huntsman C*ncer Institute at the University of Utah. (2)
The good news is that cutting off the supply of sugar into the body appears to suppress c*ncer growth, says a 2011 report published in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism. (3)

And according to researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive C*ncer Center, starving c*ncer of sugar activates a “metabolic and signaling amplification loop” that literally results in c*ncer cell death and heightened effectiveness of antioxidant c*ncer therapies like vitamin C. (4)

THAT PUTS YOU IN THE POWER POSITION. You can make informed choices.

Removing c*ncer-causing toxins, moving your body, and following a healthy diet that’s low in sugar are all essential for avoiding and beating c*ncer…

But it’s not everything that’s needed.

We all know Zinc as a go-to when we get sick (along with vitamin C, of course). But did you know it can be a super-protector against Breast Cancer as well?

Indirectly, Zinc can be your advocate on the Healthy Breast path through the way it can decrease oxidative stress.

The Wayne State study found that increasing Zinc levels can lower a substance called IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor). High IGF-1 levels have long been associated with cancer risk.

Zinc has been shown to have a direct effect on cancer cells. In the above study, zinc supplementation turned off certain functions that can lead to cancer growth.

In addition, a recent (2017) study on esophageal cancer at the University of Texas at Arlington found that zinc “significantly inhibits the proliferation of … cancer cells.”

A large-scale cohort study sponsored by the Pomeranian Medical University in Poland found that those individuals with the highest concentration of zinc had the lowest risk of cancer, including Breast Cancer.

As we kick off Women's History Month and celebrate the achievements of women around the world, let us take a moment to reflect on an important issue close to our hearts - female health.

Historically, there have been significant gaps in knowledge surrounding this topic due to cultural biases that have excluded females from participating in research studies! Within recent decades requirements have compelled researchers to use females in clinical studies (and other marginalized groups).

Yet, one area of research and medical education that is still lacking is Menopause. Funding for research into women's health is still less than 1% of the medical research budget, and menopause research takes just a small fraction of that.

That's right, a research study was funded that focused on menopausal women and their libido! I almost feel like sending a "thank you" card to the author of the published paper!

Do you only think about your health when you’re sick?

Autoimmune Protocol – The Paleo Way
Hey Jim,

You've heard of keto, paleo, gluten-free, vegan... there are so many fad diets, and legitimate ones around. But how do you know which way-of-eating is right for you?

The AIP diet is an elimination and reintroduction protocol which aims to reduce inflammation in the gut, heal the gastrointestinal tract and in turn, reduce overall systemic inflammation. Give Your Underamrs the TLC They Need

Darker Pigmentation...

At times you may notice that parts of your underarm are darker than others. Changes in skin pigmentation can occur because of a number of reasons, including a fluctuation in hormone levels and sensitivity to certain products. These changes are more common in women with darker skin.


Excessive Sweating...

Sure, we all sweat a little more than we'd like to from time to time, especially when we're nervous, it's hot out, or we just finished a grueling spinning class. But it's time to visit your doctor if you're sweating so much that it's ruining your clothes. If you're going through multiple shirts a day, speak to your doctor about a prescription deodorant, I am a spammer ban me injections, or a laser treatment to help control the problem.


General Irritation...

One of the most common underarm problems is general irritation or a rash. Temperature, hair removal, clothing, and even the type of deodorant you wear can cause irritation, such as redness or bumps. For the healthiest underarms possible, avoid tight clothes that rub underneath your arms, especially when you're working out. Wash with antibacterial soap, but don't overdo it. The skin under your arms is thin, and scrubbing too much will irritate it. Finally, if you have sensitive skin, use an unscented deodorant, as fragrance is a common irritant.

Ingrown hairs occur most commonly because of shaving. The top of the hair follicle is cut off, and a sharp point is created at the end. As the sharp point grows out, it can penetrate the skin surface and cause a bump.

To prevent ingrown hairs, use a single-blade razor to shave under your arms - it's less likely to leave your hair with that sharpened point. Or you can use a depilatory. Laser hair removal is also a good option. It works particularly well on the underarms, and generally you only need two to three treatments.

Regular exfoliation of the area is also helpful. To prevent ingrown hairs, I am a spammer ban me daily, except on days when you've waxed, threaded, or sugared the area.


Skin Tags...

As their name suggests, skin tags are little excess pieces of hanging skin. They're common in any area of your body that has skin folds, like your underarms, and are a result of repeated friction. The good news is that skin tags are harmless. The bad news is that only your dermatologist can remove them safely. If you have a large number of them or you're extremely bothered by them, make an appointment with your doctor to have them snipped sterility.

An impending New Jersey law plans to automatically add everyone into an electronic vaccine tracking system but the good news is you can opt out!
New Jersey Bill S3240 was recently passed by the Senate Health Committee. Alarmingly, the bill requires automatic registration of any vaccine administered with the New Jersey Immunization Information System (NJIIS), NJ’s existing statewide database of immunization records.
The purpose of NJIIS is as dystopian as it sounds:
NJIIS … consolidates immunization information from all providers into one record to provide an accurate immunization assessment and … assists state and federal agencies with population assessments in the event of a preventable disease outbreak and helps communities assess their immunization coverage and identify pockets of need.
The concern that the government might use the registry to track vaccine compliance is not a fiction, as New York State is already using its immunization registry to target those that refuse these medical products.
The good news is, if you or your child are already in the system, you can withdraw yourself or your child from enrollment in the NJIIS by providing a written request to withdraw.
Please be aware, however, that after this bill is passed, each time anyone receives a vaccine in the future, that individual will be automatically enrolled in this database and thus he or she must fill out and submit the form each time he or she receives a vaccine if the individual does not want to be enrolled.
There is a caveat to withdrawing: the Commissioner of Health may deny an individual’s request to not participate in the registry during a public health emergency or outbreak.
If you or your child were already automatically enrolled in NJIIS and would like to opt-out, you (or your guardian, if you are younger than 18) must complete the NJIIS Registrant Withdrawal Form and mail it to the address at the top of the form. This same form may be used after the bill is passed to opt out of automatic enrollment after the receipt of any future vaccinations.
