Eating Less Can Mean Living Longer

Even if you eat healthy food, research is finding that eating less actually adds years to the life of the heart.

Washington University School of Medicine researchers reported that people who significantly restricted their caloric intake had hearts that functioned at a rate of people 20 years younger.

The researchers hooked portable heart monitors to 22 subjects who practiced calorie restriction. This meant they ate healthy diets, but consumed 30% fewer calories than normal. Their average age was just over 51.

For comparison, the researchers also studied 20 other people of about the same age who ate standard Western diets.

Luigi Fontana, M.D., lead author of this study, which was published in the journal Aging Cell, said that much of his research suggests calorie restriction with optimal nutrition contributes to significant changes in people that are similar to changes seen in animals.

A recent study funded by the National Institute on Aging published in the journal Nature Aging found similar results.

It found that a calorie-restricted diet can provide substantial health benefits, including delayed aging, said the study’s senior author, Dan Belsky, assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City.

How Bill Healed Stage 4 Cancer Holistically
In today's video, we sit down with Bill Buvens. In March, 2001, Bill was diagnosed with stage 4 colon and liver cancer and was told by doctors he'd be dead within six (6) months if he didn't comply with the doctors' recommendations of surgery, chemotherapy and possibly radiation. Doctors went on to say that even if Bill did comply, the chances of him surviving five (5) years were still less than 20%.

Secrets to Aging More Gracefully

Exercise: Whatever your motivation is to working out - feeling good, blowing off stress, losing weight - you can add one more to the list: staying young. In a study on older adults , those who exercised functioned physiologically similar to younger people.

Makeup: If you have wrinkles, brown spots, and bags, you're probably tempted to slap on a thick coat of foundation and powder all over your face. Make up cannot cover up aging so instead of caking it on, layer it. Doing so will help disguise the signs of discoloration and hyper-pigmentation.

Sunblock: Your face and hands are two body parts that get the most sun. But if you're busy slathering on moisturizers and anti-aging products on your face, your complexion may look young while your hands betray that with brown spots and wrinkles. The same exact products you use for your face can go on your hands. Use a retinoid at night and rub a small amount to the backs of your hands. After slathering on a good SPF moisturizer in the morning, do the same for your hands.

Sleep: It's not called beauty sleep for nothing. Poor quality sleep not only increases the visible signs of aging around your face, but also makes you feel less attractive. Plus, compared to those who got less than 5 hours of sleep, women who clocked 7 to 9 hours had skin that also bounced back better from UV light exposure. This means sleep helps your skin naturally ward off the damaging effects of the sun, slowing down the aging process.

Sesame Orange Dill Vegetable Casserole
(full recipe in this email below)
Ingredients:
  • 2 medium raw beets thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced into rings
  • 1 cup bulgur cooked
  • 1 medium carrot grated or spiralized
  • 1 stalk celery chopped
  • 1/2 cup kidney beans
  • 1 cup kale finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp dry toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tbsp cilantro finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp paprika regular or smoked (optional)
Directions:
  1. Place the first seven ingredients (beets through to kale) in a bowl.
  2. Sprinkle the top with toasted sesame seeds, lemon juice, cilantro and paprika on top.
  3. Mix together before eating.
Note: To cut down the prep time prepare the bulgur ahead. Instead of bulgur use any grain you desire as an alternative as well.

Beware of Products Labeled 'Antimicrobial'

What do credit cards, hockey helmets, kids' toys, trashcans, toothpaste, deodorants, and shaving creams have in common? They all could contain triclosan, which for a long time has been touted as an effective antimicrobial agent for killing bacteria.

Then it was discovered that triclosan could contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant germs — super bugs — and the Food and Drug Administration banned its use in hospital cleaning agents and consumer soaps.

Unfortunately, the FDA can't regulate paints, clothes, sporting equipment, or furniture. That's why you still can find triclosan in those products, as well as anything else that advertises itself as having “antimicrobial properties.”

And it continues to cause problems, both for the biosphere and for you.

A study published in the journal Antimicrobial Agents & Chemotherapy revealed how triclosan can help bacteria become more resistant to antibiotic treatments for diseases such as urinary tract infections. Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis found that repeated triclosan exposure makes bacteria able to survive “normally lethal concentrations of antibiotics,” including Cipro.

Previous research has found that triclosan alters hormone regulation and could be harmful to your immune system.

Be on your guard for clothing, house paints, toys, etc. that claim to control or kill germs and bacteria. There's a good chance they contain triclosan. Manufacturers are not required to put that information in their labeling.

Washing your hands thoroughly with plain soap and water is just as effective at getting rid of unwanted bacteria as so-called antimicrobials.
