Sweet Potato & Black Bean Patties​

Black beans are a great base for patties — tasty, protein-rich, and filling. Cook and enjoy these right away or form and freeze for a future quick and easy lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
  • 1 small sweet potato
  • 1 15 oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • ¼ cup gluten-free rolled oats or millet flakes
  • ¼ cup buckwheat flour (or gluten free flour of choice)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ¼ cup corn kernels, canned or frozen
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F and cut the sweet potato in half.
  2. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until soft and tender to the touch.
  3. Carefully remove sweet potato from the oven and scoop out the sweet potato flesh.
  4. Add the sweet potato flesh to a food processor with ¾ cup black beans and process to form a mash.
  5. Add oats, flour, onion, all spices, and process again for 30 seconds until it forms a moist and moldable batter.
  6. Transfer the patty mixture to a medium bowl and stir in the remaining black beans and corn kernels.
  7. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  8. Split the patty batter into 6 even balls and place each ball on the baking paper, leaving 4 inches of space.
  9. With your palm, gently flatten each ball into patties. The thinner you press them, the crispier and the faster they cook.
  10. Bake patties for 25-30 minutes, or until crispy on the sides.
  11. Serve in collard wraps or with a salad, or any healthy veg you like!

Benefits of Peanut and Other Nut Butters

Weight Control: It's true nuts have lots of fat, but that doesn't mean you should avoid them completely. The high protein and fiber keep you feeling full and energized. That could help you eat fewer calories and lose weight. If you're on a diet, you're more likely to stick with it if you eat nuts. Just don't overdo it.

The Good Fat: Most of the fat in nuts is unsaturated, which is better for you than the saturated kind in meat or the trans fats in many processed foods. It may help stabilize your blood sugar and insulin, the hormone that regulates it.

Packed With Nutrients: It isn't just the high protein, fiber, and healthy fats that are good for you. Nuts also have plenty of other nutrients like Vitamins E and B6, folic acid, niacin, magnesium, zinc, copper, and potassium. Just watch the ingredients on your brand of nut butter, peanut or otherwise. Some have added salt, sugar, preservatives, and unhealthy fats that could do more harm than good.

Magnesium: This mineral is good for your nerves, muscles, bones, blood sugar, blood pressure, and even your DNA. If you're like many Americans, you may not get enough. Nuts like cashews, almonds, and peanuts, and the butters made from them, have lots of it.

Keep Cholesterol in Check: Having too much cholesterol can harden your arteries and lead to stroke and heart disease. Almonds, walnuts, and other tree nuts seem to lower it when it gets too high. Your body makes most of your cholesterol, but you get some of it from the food you eat. Luckily, nuts have little or none of the stuff.

Spinach in a Jacket
(full recipe in this email below)
Ingredients:
  • 1 large Russet potato cleaned
  • 1 tbsp dill weed
  • 4 cups spinach chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • pinch nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup chickpeas mashed
Directions:
  1. Prick the potato well with a fork and bake on a baking sheet for one hour in a 400 degree F oven.
  2. Steam the spinach for 1 minute or until wilted.
  3. To the spinach add garlic, dill, nutmeg and set aside.
  4. Once the potato is cooked, let it cool until you can handle it. Cut the potato in half lengthwise and scoop out the flesh.
  5. Mix the potato and the mashed chickpeas and add the spinach mixture. Mix well.
  6. Pile the mixture into the potato shells.
  7. Return the potato to the baking sheet and brown under a preheated broiler for a few minutes.
Note: Instead of spinach you could also use sweet chard or collard greens.

Be on the Lookout for Stroke Risk Factors

The following is a list of the traditional stroke risk factors that usually occur in senior adults:

High blood pressure. Also called hypertension, high blood pressure increases stroke likelihood by four to six times.

Atherosclerosis. This is the term for buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries. When this happens in the heart, it’s known as coronary artery disease. But it can occur in the brain as well and is a major cause of stroke.

Carotid artery disease. Blood flows to your brain through the carotid arteries in the neck. If these vessels become narrowed, a clot can form, causing a stroke. Fifty percent of strokes are caused by problems in the carotid arteries.

Atrial fibrillation. Like high blood pressure, this common heartbeat irregularity increases stroke risk four to six times. Other types of heart arrythmia can also cause stroke.

In loving memory of Dr. Rashid Buttar, 1966-2023​
Hi Jim,

It is with sadness, yet great appreciation, that we pay tribute to my friend and colleague Dr. Rashid Buttar, who passed away on May 18th.

Rashid was a fearless and tireless advocate of health freedom and
speaking truth to power, and he had an immense impact on helping the world understand the power of their bodies to heal, from literally anything.

We were less than a month away from his 5th Annual Advanced Medicine Conference, which we are now uncertain will proceed.

Given that Rashid was put on a digital hit list, along side me, cynically named the "disinformation dozen," we had a special bond and interest in discussing the many ways we could continue to preserve health freedom, free speech, natural medicine, and ultimately bring the world into a healthier, happier, and more beautiful phase of evolution.

I will cherish these conversations, and Rashid's incredibly sincere spirit
, and know that while his life has been cut short, he helped make this world a safer, better place for us all through his good works.

Due to rumors circulating and the many questions I have received as to the cause of his passing, I wish to share the last publicly recorded discussion we had, where Rashid wanted the world to know the details surrounding the sudden decline of his health.

For the record, Rashid reached out to me on Feb. 18th, and explained that only a few weeks before, he was in the ICU for 6 days, with a diagnosis of both stroke and myocarditis, with symptoms and biomarkers consistent with adverse effects from the mRNA jabs (which he did not have). As you will see in the video, he believed that he was experiencing the result of shedding (aka, "self-amplifying" properties) from the transgenic mRNA jabs.

Rashid shares his story starting at the hour marker of an interview I conducted on March 13th with Dr. Joel Bohemier, Rashid, Ty Bollinger (another "hit list" member) and titled The Censorship Industrial Establishment Exposed.​
Ultimately, Rashid life and work is to be celebrated, no matter what the circumstances are of his passing.

You will be missed, my friend
, but I know many of us will continue forward the spirit of your work long into the future, which is the greatest tribute we can make to you, when it is all said and done.

In medicine, as a pediatrician for 35 years, I came to the realization that the pharmaceutical industry was so corrupt when it came to vaccines, that the chance of reform seemed "hopeless". Vinay states the same thing regarding cancer trials. I would love to see all of these crazy expensive cancer drugs go head to head with a placebo arm that focused on organic produce and massive juicing of organic fruit and vegetables. Add in some targeted supplementation of nutrient deficiencies then look at actual suvival times and quality of life.
I'm not saying throw out all tools available. Some cancers require surgery or radiation, but let us do everything we can to support our own immune systems. It is a robust immune system that takes care of cancer.

"It's hopeless," the prospect of reforming cancer trials


A colleague doesn't pull punches​

Recently, I had dinner with a friend and colleague visiting San Francisco for the SWOG (Southwest oncology group) conference. SWOG is a cooperative group-- nominally a collection of academic doctors who are supposed to run trials as a counterweight to pharma; guided by doing what is best for patients not profits. My colleague attended these sessions dutifully.
To understand our dialog here are some facts you need to know. The average cancer drug improves survival 2 months. New drugs often cost 200000 per year and there is no correlation between benefit and price.

Some new drugs-- like CAR T in myeloma-- cost 400000 per dose and cure no one. Many cancer trials that bring these products to market have serious deficiencies, which my research (and Plenary Session podcast) has described over the last decade. My colleague is a fan of this work, sees the same problems I do, and tries to fix them in his way. He attended the conference and spoke as often as possible.
“It's hopeless.” He told me over drinks, “I am literally the only person in the room saying maybe we should measure overall survival and not just pathCR or EFS or MRD. Its just hopeless. ” he told me.
The most common errors in cancer trials work to ensure that the data are not actually applicable to average Americans. Over the last 10 years, we have done work showing many trials lack control arms, use inferior controls, measure unreliable endpoints, have the inappropriate use of crossover, poor post protocol care or improper drug dosing. After having written on these topics for a decade, I wrote a book explaining these challenges called Malignant. And a short primer for the Drug Development Letter if you are interested.
“No one there has read your book, obviously,” my colleague went on, “but worse, even if they had, they wouldn’t give a shit. You can't stop the train. Pharma controls the entire narrative. The people chairing the sessions are the ones chairing the pharma trials. They are just thinking about their next consulting gig, while I waste my breath. It's hopeless.”
“What about the next generation?” I challenged him, “They are better”
“Yeah right.” He countered, “Not only are they mostly unaware of these issues, they are focused on their own IITs (investigation initiated trials) and industry trials and ad boards. And to top it off, it is all wellness and work life balance with them. They leave clinic at 12:01 and reschedule the patients are in the lobby.”
“Well, what's your solution?” I asked
“You have to come personally next year,” he said.
“What am I going to do?”
“You are more persuasive than me.”
“You think I will persuade everyone?”
“No, of course not, I just want to see you face when they talk.”
That's how the conversation ended. Not with a bang, but with a whimper.
Was my colleague too cynical? A product of not enough work-life balance? Or was he stating an uncomfortable truth? I wondered in the days that followed.

How Much Fiber Should You Get?

The paper “Carbohydrate Quality and Human Health” study published in The Lancet covered 40 years of data about the right amount of daily fiber you need to ward off cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and Type 2 diabetes.

Researchers found that 25-29 grams of dietary fiber daily produced the best outcomes. People consuming that much were 15%-30% less likely to die prematurely from all causes, and had a 16%-24% lower incidence of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, and Type 2 diabetes.

Unfortunately, the average American consumes only 15 grams a day.

How can you up your intake?

Replace refined grains with 100% whole grain breads and cereals. Cook whole grain pasta, sweet potatoes, and other starches in the evening, then eat them for breakfast or lunch the next day. They become resistant starches, acting like fiber.

In addition, the American Academy of Family Physicians suggests that you aim for 2 cups of fruits and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables as well as 1/2 cup cooked beans daily. Your goal, they say, is to take in 5 grams of fiber in every serving of plant-based foods you eat.
